Analysing 2004 Draft

Fired on by the poor to moderate success of the 2005 AFL Draft analysis I thought I’d go back in time – SHAZAAM - to the 2004 AFL Draft to see how we fared.

Since people seemed to prefer a grouping system over a star-rating system will group accordingly.

Then a bit choppy and random. Notable picks post here are Taylor at 52 (Group 3), Knights at 56 (Group 2/3), Moran at 58 (Group 4), M Egan at 62 (Group 3), Gwilt at 63 (Group 3), Graham at 65 (Group 4).

In terms of the Rookie Draft notables are Carazzo (Group 3), Maxwell (Group 2), Dodd (Group 3), Byrnes (Group 3), Aaron Davey (Group 2), K Moore (Group 4).

We did well with Maxwell and Cloke under F/S. Rusling is a potential Group 1 or 2 but has obviously been savaged. Pick 10 was a disappointment and Iacobucci was but not taken until 55. If Rus steps up could be a decent draft for us at @3/5, at present might have to say 2.5/5

LeCras as Group 3 is pretty rough. Group 2 minimum.

Hopefully Wood can jump a group or 2.

Any review of a given year's drafting needs to be considered in a holistic way - it's not just about the national draft; trades are important & we've had enormous success with the rookie draft in the last few years.... Harry O, Maxy, Wellingham, Marty Clarke, et al. Likewise the NSW scholarship scheme could well yield some beauties.

Our list wouldn't be so hot if we hadn't have nabbed some bargain basement specials in the Rookie Drafts. Phew!

Keeping pick 7 and using it on Lewis would have been a good starting point.

That was never an option, there was a perception at the time we had too many large bodied, slow midfield types and not enough X factor.. the deal was only done with Hawthorn because we had a commitment from them not to take Egan.. we simply were never going to look at Lewis.. a harsh lesson in taking best available regardless of need we've since learnt hopefully

There is no way Rusling can be group 3 if Tambling is group three, Ryan Griffen shouldn't be group 2 either, clearly better then everyone else in it. If he is a group 2 then the rest of the group 2s should be 2/3.

Is this list done on what a player has done or what they could do?

In terms of the Rookie Draft notables are Carazzo (Group 3), Maxwell (Group 2), Dodd (Group 3), Byrnes (Group 3), Aaron Davey (Group 2), K Moore (Group 4).

These were the promotions from the rookie list rather than the players drafted in the 2004 Rookie Draft. Maxwell was drafted in 2002. Harry O was drafted in the 2004 Rookie Draft though. Made up for the selection of Egan with our first pick.

Gee from pick 8 to the 20's there are some absolute spuds and average players.

Hopefully Woody can keep coming on as you'd expect a ruckman to mature later and Rusling to stay injury free.

As indicated by someone else, we were never going to take Jordan Lewis.

I think it was Egan then Matthew Bate who we were looking at.

Was a weak draft outside the top few.

What a terrible draft, outside of the Fab 5 at the start (apart from Tambling lol), you would be lucky to look back after 10 years and still see 5-6 players still playing.

Just shows that drafting isnt an exact science, and that someone like Lecras or even Maxwell can be taken late or as a rookie and be better then a top 10 rated player.

This years draft is supposed to be similar too, in that the top 10 are very strong but below that there is apparently little depth.

Might make our last draft (Beams, Sidebottom, Blight, Blair, Keefe, Rounds) into the most important we have had, as with the GC and WSYD coming in, the draft is just going to get worse for the under prepared clubs.

A bit of a mixed bag for us that draft.

Getting Travis Cloke under the father/son was great for us, a bit of a freebie that probably sweetened what was a pretty average year for us in terms of recruiting.

The whole Egan/Lewis scenario has been gone over countless times, the reasons as to why we took Egan have been fully explained and I think the recruiters have probably learned from it. For what it's worth I actually thought he showed signs at various stages, especially early on, but it became clear as time went on that he was a lazy player with a very limited defensive game who we just couldn't afford to carry as he inevitably went missing.

Rusling could have been an inspired pick up had he been able to keep fit, I still believe even now that he has the potential to be a top shelf AFL footballer if he can get his body right. I guess we'll just have to await his fate.

From memory, that was the draft that we gave away one of our mid 30 picks for Chad Morrison which I believe West Coast used on Lecras. Obviously we might not have chosen Lecras with that pick but clearly West Coast won out on that deal considering how well the bloke is playing these days. For what it's worth I'd have Lecras on the verge of group 1, seriously underrated player.

Getting Harry O in the rookie draft was probably the saving grace of that particular year, what an absolute gun he is and seems to be improving constantly as a player. Not only a great player but also a fantastic role model and real genuine character of the game.

Am I right in thinking that this was Hine's first year as recruiting manager?

About 5 picks in the first 20 and aside from Deledio and to a lesser extend Tambling they stuffed up royally.

At least Richmond got a couple of decent players out of the draft, look at Carlton's choices. Mega Ouch!

Mind you, we should be used to that from both these sides, Carlton's success rate with anyone who wasn't drafted at number one is ridiculously low. As for Richmond, well they're Richmond, nuff said.

Hartlett never got going due to injury, but was a logical needs based pick in the second round. Lacks the athleticism to be a player, but obviously comes from a sporting family with his younger brother a gun and another Hartlett who can kick.

Both Hartlett and Blackwell were worth a shot in a weak draft.

Bryan is on your list, so he must have had something going for him.
