Heppell's in a position and of a profile such that if he said he was staying it would go a long way to get others to re-sign.

And it would as good as guarantee him the captaincy (of one of the big four clubs - massive profile, life-after-football taken care of then and there).

The fact he's left the door very much ajar is interesting if nothing else.

The guys like Bellchambers & Hocking are not the ones to worry about imo. It's the older ones who are within a year or 2 of retirement (Watson, Stanton) and the ones who will get big money offers from flag-contending sides (Hurley, Hooker, Heppell).

Hocking is one of the older players, he's 3rd oldest of the 12 and also a former vice captain. Getting him on early means a lot more than you're giving it credit.
