I doubt it. Last year we could have got an early to mid 2nd round pick but because he hasn't played much this year his stocks have fallen.

There is no doubt the kid can play but with Burton being moved to the wing Doughty is not really required

I would have thought that pick 40 is not enough for Doughty.

Apart from getting stitched up by Burns in a poor match up he hasn't been that bad. He is a strong mark above his head and normally a good finisher.

Having said that he wouldn't make my first choice 22.

No way Stiffy.

This is not the strongest draft ever.

What the hell do you think we might get with pick #40. nothing more than a gamble.

Doughty's good enough for AFL. He proved that by playing every game with a top 4 club last year. He's just been leap-frogged, that's all.

Use him as part of a trade to get another player, or keep him as back-up.

But not for #40.

Doughty for pick 40?

I'd take that.

Drafting is obviously hit and miss at that stage of the draft but the potential upside is very high. The last couple of years we have taken players such as Johncock and Schuback with later picks than that. We can easily find other Doughty's around the place, and use the rookie list system to trial them first. And to be honest I can't see Doughty playing regularly for us in the near future anyway. Skipworth and Schuback are probably going to be ahead of him next year.

I was thinking a bit that way too. If we don't see Doughty as part of our immediate plans then we should be looking to offload him for a player with a longer future.

But can we do better than a 3rd rounder?

Should be interesting.

It appears that AFC are going to be pretty active in the trading period. Hopefully we opt for youth.

I would like to see us trade up in the draft in a hope of landing Kepler Bradley. If we can keep our pick 14 and get a top 5 pick, I think it would be a great piece of trading by the club.

If we can land Bradley and a key forward in Billy Morrison or William Gayfer, I would be very happy.

This would require club to take risks, I somehow don't see that happening:(

I really hope we don't trade away our first round pick AGAIN.

In fact, I hope we go the other way, like you suggest Stiffy, and actually GAIN another first round pick and then we can have 2  1st round picks.

The more first round picks you get the better the odds are that you will land a ripper.

The problem is, I get the impression other clubs rate 1st round picks higher than we do, which could make it tougher to get someone else to give one over to us.

But whatever happens, KEEP OUR TOP PICK.

by players in a team that dropped to 6th...
perhaps Doughty's form last year was flattered by playing in a much stronger midfield?

fwiw, I would not be that unhappy if he remained on our list next year. Cerainly has a better future than Gags, who is gawn imo.

Hear hear :)

Earlier in the year, when Goody was yet to sign, a report from Melbourne was that a Melbourne recruiting officer said that he would give number 1 pick for Goodwin. He rated him that highly. While its highly unlikely we would do the trade but if we could get say pick 3 and Nick Smith for Goodwin and Doughty, I would go for that.

Bulldogs and Carlton are more than likely to pick up Cooney and Tennece (sp?) with pick 1 and 2 respectively. This would leave us to pick up Bradley with pick 3. We can then use pick 14 to pick up another quality tall or go for the best available and we could also get a decent player with pick 29. Maybe even trade pick 29 to Port for Guerra to somewhat soften the blow from losing Goodwin.

Thoughts??????

Not from my usual source but there are whispers that Doughty might go to Kangaroos for pick 40. This one will depend on other deals.

How about we do a swap for S Motlop instead, who appears out of favour?

PS Hope I got my Motlops right, as I get them confused.

Yes, Shannon is the one who has been around a while but can't cement a spot. I don't know why though, he was in stellar form in early 2003.

Daniel is the younger one who's supposed to be the next big thing.

I like the idea of trading for Shannon Motlop as well. He could prove a very handy goal sneak. Burns only has a year or so left and Johncock will move into the middle.

I rate Doughty as a good player and I was disappointed at how little footy he got this year.

As far as I know he didn't have any major injuries so I can only assume that Ayres doesn't consider him to be an important part of the Crows' future. If that's the case they probably should let him go for his own sake as I'm sure he could be a regular starter in most other clubs.

Stiffy - wouldn't Melbourne's best pick be number 4.

My understanding is that the Doggies get a priority pick for finishing with 4 or less wins giving them picks 1 & 2, with Carlton getting 3 with their priority pick.

Each team that's eligible for a priority pick has those picks first, i.e. Doggies 1, Blues 2 and Demons 3, then the normal draft process commences with the Doggies starting off the first round at 4.

If it was the best offer available and it was the final day of trading, I would definitely do it. Unless there's a dramatic shift, he really has no future at the footy club and we should take what we can get.

Wouldn't mind seeing North want for S. Motlop either.

Who would you draft with it, Stiffy. It depends on whether you're drafting a certainty or a maybe. If you could pick up a Riewoldt, of course we would and should go in that direction. If it's a real gamble, then no.

If we do trade one of the elite it has to be Goody.

I don't dislike it Stiffy, but yeah, it's got to be for player that's almost a certainty to be, at the very least, a good player. No tall project players in the hope they come on.....what do you think? How good is he going to be? If you had to stake your reputation on it?

I would draft Bradley with it;)

Use pick 14 on William Gayfer or Bill Morrison (in that order if available)

Either trade pick 29 to Port for Guerra or keep it and draft a youngster

Hmm it is an interesting one for sure. Doughty just couldn't crack it this year. By all accounts (probably Matt or Dave could confirm this) his form hasn't been too bad in the SANFL and that he was unlucky not to be in our side. I guess though he has been around the traps for a few years and maybe it is time to test the water and see what we can get for him.
