Yeah I want to add how pleased I am to see that preseason is much more match simulation than fitness science. It seems that this was one of the key changes from the review and one you would think improve our overall ball skills. We tried going full science with training and we still struggled to run out games and had lots of injuries. We are a football club not the AIS
That’s what happens when you have a boffin running it.

Training Report: Wednesday 22nd November 2017
Hot & sunny. 27 at the beginning of training.

I made sure I was wearing my membership lanyard today in case I was challenged by Walshie again. It almost scored me a $3 coffee until I owned up that I was not a staff member.

Not training: Elliott, Adams although Adams turned up on the sidelines wearing thongs at about 11am.

Bucks arrived and went straight to Daics and gave him a few pats on the chest and then had a chat for a few minutes.
Broomhead hasn’t seen a pair of barber’s scissors for a long time. Neither has Grundy.
Nice to see Travis Varcoe looking super fit. He’s in the best condition that I can remember. Wells also looks to be in reasonably good shape which is very pleasing after last year's training debut.

Last week I suggested Maynard looked slimmer. I thought that it may just have been the dark training top but it isn’t. He has slimmed down considerably. So much so, that I couldn’t pick him at first. I was without my binoculars today; they are in a box somewhere after my weekend house move and with all of the players wearing caps or hats, some of them were hard to spot. I mistook Maynard for Crisp for a while today until he momentarily removed his hat. He's also looking a lot more comfortable in his running work. They say it takes a couple of tough preseasons for a player to really begin to exhibit their true potential and I really like what I am seeing with Maynard.

Training began with the usual stretching and then run-throughs. I did a quick count at this time and it seemed that there was almost one trainer/coach per player. I counted 32 baby-blue shirts on the ground. That’s a hell of a lot of assistants.

A wheelie-bin was pushed out onto the boundary and at the first drinks break the players converged on it and grabbed what appeared to be little balloons filled with water. Water fights then erupted. Good day for a water fight. The players loved it. It reminded me that many of them are just big kids after all.

I suppose the really surprising thing for me today was that it could have been a mid-season training day. There were no sprints; there was no summer torture, but instead, skill work for the whole session.

•There was a non-stop ruck drill featuring Grundy, Cox and Max Lynch, supervised by Anthony Rocca. Cox & Grundy battled to win the ball and palm in down to a waiting Max Lynch who acted as the rover. This drill was continuous for about 15 minutes.

•Another drill consisted of two trainers standing about 10 metres apart with 5 players in the middle. The ball was tapped/palmed/rolled to a designated player who had to win the ball in congestion. Jackson Ramsay and Darcy Moore did very well in this drill.

•Down at the Yarra end, running players received a hand-pass and then shot for goal.

•On the AAMI side a group did kicking & handball drills.

One group left the main party and ran laps. They were Ramsay, Greenwood, Sharenberg, Maynard, Wells and Sier. After 2 laps Sier walked over to a trainer and indicated some issue with his right leg. That was the last we saw of him.

Players rotated through the drills, whilst a group of players came to the Glasshouse side to do 100 metre runs. Brown and Oxley ran together. Next DeGoey came across to join them. After 15 minutes DeGoey started to wilt in the heat as did Oxley. Greenwood on the other hand trained the house down in this running session. He ran alone and was still going thirty minutes later. Now Max Lynch comes over and begins 200 metre runs. He does this for about 15 minutes.

A new drill and one supervised by at least three trainers, was banana shooting for goal from the pockets. A group was shooting from the AAMI pocket doing right foot bananas and the other group shot from the opposite pocket. Matthew Boyd was one of the supervisors during this drill.

The players left the field at about 11:20. Last to leave as usual were Ben Crocker and Josh Smith.
The next training session will be Friday at 9:30.

Cool so we can add heat to the list of things Oxley wilts under right next to physical contact :$

Should have just taken the salary hit...

Gee sco , very harsh
We're you working outdoors?
Has a Hip injury , pretty hard to work on that tank and accepting a demotion earnt the clubs respect
Liked by all at the club as well
We're going to have odd players not playing , like all clubs every year
He's not being retained with us expecting him to play
Do you expect him to force his way in?
He has perhaps earned his spot by his demeanour , work ethic in rehab and of course relationships
I'm glass half full
You

In all seriousness, surely a hip injury and constantly playing golf don't mix too well.

Great report Neil.

Really
New advice shows you have to move it or loose it , get mobility into the joint
Low impact
Using a cart perhaps as well?

Remember that finger injury from the win in the wet over Gold Coast back in July? At long last, the final pins have been removed. Great news, skipper #FOREVERpic.twitter.com/ou4167wIJH

I'll quickly explain that we identified we have had a revolving door
24 players out of contract
We want continuity this year
That's been our weakness the lack of a core group
Now Pablo as mentionted doubt he will play, doubt he will be there next season but he might suprise
Good pr to keep him on
Boys enjoy each others company
Not so much by all reports at hawks

Training Report: Monday November 27: Full List Time Trial
Cool & Cloudy after early showers 17C

The players must have done their warm ups behind closed doors, because they didn’t enter the arena until 10:10 and it was straight into the 2km time trial.
Smith and Greenwood took off early and after one lap led the field with new boy Jaidyn Stephenson third and then Phillips, Aish, Howe, Broomhead and Crisp.
After two laps it was Smith from Greenwood and Phillips with Aish and Sidebottom 100 metres further back.
After 3 laps Greenwood took the lead from Smith and Phillips. It was only a matter of time before Phillips made his move and he made it at the Yarra goal end. He took off and left Greenwood and Smith in his wake.

As they crossed the line it was Phillips easily from Greenwood and Smith. Phillips’s time of 6:04 was not a PB. He told me later that he’d run a sub 6 min trial in the first session back after last Christmas.
Me: You sat back for the first few laps. Was that a plan to see what the others had?
TP: Not really. I wasn’t feeling very well. I was a bit sick early this morning and it sometimes takes me a while to get going. Once I’m on the track I’m fine.
Times:
Phillips: 6:04
Greenwood 6:10
Smith 6:11

Sidebottom 6:21
Crisp 6:27
Aish 6:28

Crocker 6:31
Adams 6:32
**Nathan Murphy 6:32
Blair 6:36
** New Rookie Jack Madgen 6:36
Howe 6:39

Mayne 6:40
Will H-E 6:40
Broomhead 6:41
••Stephenson 6:44
Maynard 6:44
Fasolo 6:47

Dunne 6:58
Varcoe 6:59

Cox 7:05
Grundy 7:12
••Tyler Brown 7:16
Sam McLarty 7:21

Sam McLarty was physically ill after his run and later said it must have been his breakfast disagreeing with him.
Although Kayle Kirby was on the track, he didn’t do the time trial this time around. Callum Brown and Daniel Wells didn’t do the time trial either. Max Lynch arrived late.

Not present: Scott Pendlebury, Ben Reid, Adam Treloar, Darcy Moore, Adam Oxley, Jackson Ramsay, Jordan DeGoey, Brayden Sier, Rupert Wills.

It was great to see all three draftees do the run. When was the last time that happened? All of our draftees appear fit and ready to go. After the time trial they left the track.

After the time trial there was 90 minutes of skill work. Most of the drills were ones I’ve mentioned before, but there were a few new ones worth mentioning.

One involved senior players (5 years and more on list) taking the ball in front of goal, having a bounce and then kicking to Anthony Rocca 30 metres away on the flank. Players then accepted the handball, took a bounce and delivered to on the wing to Matthew Boyd. Then another bounce before kicking to Bucks at CHF. Another handball receive before shooting at goal. Then players wheeled around and ran back to do it all again.

I was talking to another track watcher about Tay Adams getting a bad rap for his disposal. I defended him and then we watched as he took the ball on the wing and kicked to Bucks. We laughed as the ball skewed off the side of his boot and went 30 metres sideways. Oh well.

The other noticeable drill was goal kicking. One group of players did this for over 30 minutes before being joined by the entire list.
It seems there is an emphasis on field kicking, ball movement and goal kicking already so early in the pre-season.

One supporter was disgusted that Wells didn’t do the time trial or take part in the team drill work. I’d rather see him on his own programme if it means we get more games out of him. I guess Ben Reid is being similarly managed.

Eddie turned up at about 11:15 and when the new recruits came back out, he had a chat to each of them and welcomed them to the club. He introduced each to Ian McMullin as well.

Happy to answer any questions you may have.

Top effort once again...any sign of Wills ?

Thanks Neil, was Sier out there? Remember he has a leg complaint last week so keen to know if it was serious or not.

Greenwood appeared after the time trial to do lots of 100 metre drills with heavy bandaging on his right knee. He also did plenty of drills with a trainer to test the knee. He wasn't limping and he continued to train hard, so it appears to be minor.

Kid should be wearing #42
He really looks the one you'd think could be "right" in that jumper.
Mrs Millane would have to ok it. Unsure she wants to revive the number.
