I'm amazed how many Crows supporters are falling for the Graham Cornes line of "let's re-appoint Gary Ayres".

Yes, Gary is a fine honourable courageous dedicated man - the type you would take into the trenches with you.

No, he's not the answer for our future. As a coach, he's unimaginative, makes wrong selections, wrong match-ups, is too stubborn, and loses games with his slow reaction time to make moves.

To argue that we can't be sure that there's better coaches out there is farcical and accepting mediocrity. If every team adopted that approach, there would be 16 x 80 year old coaches in the AFL, as nothing would ever change.

Gary's had his 5 years, and failed. So have his dull collection of assistant coaches.

If I were handling the 2005 coaching appointment, I would tell Gary that he won't be re-appointed, but not sack him, and set up a sub-committe to start straight away on the recruiting process.

What do you think??

I voted c. sack him at the end of the year and say nothing.

Lets show a united front till the end of the year. we are aware Ayre's isn't going to be there, but why make the rest of the squad feel Gary's dimise.

Personally the thing I think the club need is a big boost of confidense, at least once we have that we will show more competition. sacking teh coach now wont prove anything. I mean, look for someone now, but dont sack and let the media know untill the end of the year.

well thats how I see it anyway. :)

I voted for option B, & that way it would give the club ample time to recruit the best replacement possible, it would also give Gary time to weigh up what path he would like to take & maybe that might also mean Gary resigning before the year is out,
but at least he can go out with his dignity intact.

Ayresy has had 5 years & by the look of it will struggle to get anymore out of the playing group that we currently have.

Yes macca i also agree a complete clean out of the coaching box is the way to go including past champions of the club.

I picked option B.

We only have another two months of the season left, so planning for 2005 now is a smart move.

Cornes article is a joke. He is clearly having flashbacks to 1994 when he was in the same position. He also left a few facts out of his article

1. For Graham to disregard Wallce now, saying he is no better than Ayres, is amazing when you consider that it was Cornes screaming for us to get Wallace in 1999.

Target Wallace was one of Cornses articles on the back page of the Tiser in 99 if I recall correctly.

2. To say that GA's coaching record is better than Worsfold, Roos and Connely at the same stage is an unfair comaprison. They did not inherit a grand final side like GA did in their first years.

3. Cornes has been bagging the Crows gameplan for ages. Does he now want to see more of the same for another two years?

I bloody well don't!! Clean the club out!

Reappoint him unless you can get better.

...has anyone given thought to who should replace him.
Dont through the baby out with the bath water.

We have a lot going for us in the youth department despite what some of you think.

What better role model than Gary Aryes- a tough straight ahead honest rotty who nows success!!

The remainder of the season should be designed aroung playing all lads.....Watts etc

Dont play for draft picks that breeds laziness;)

Bullsh*t. He inherited a club that had finished their worst season to date, with most of the GF stars and their last legs, many already gone.

The rest of your post is good, but don't make things up. Ayres didn't inherit a good list.

He did at Geelong IIRC

I think thats what Jerome was getting at. D|ckhead Cornes was arguing that if you look at Gary's record for the first 3 seasons of his coaching career he has a LOT better record than someone like Wallace, Roos or Thompson. He is blatantly ignoring the quality of players that each coach had at their disposal when they started out.

Thank you.

That's exactly what I meant.

Just for the benefit of Michaelangelo Rucci:

It's okay to publish the results of this poll if you want!! ;)

It's an interesting topic!!

:D

I found myself agreeing with Rucci on his article that Bill has to make a call one way or the other and make it soon.

If we leave it until the end of the year we could miss out on the best candidate.

Stiffy, that's exactly the point.

NOW is the time to be looking for next year's coach before the field thins out.

To do that with honour we have to tell Ayres now that he is not being re-appointed at the end of the year.

And you make an extremely valid point that cornes overlooked. Bloke is on a major ego trip.

Either that or Gaz scared the crap out of him on Monday. As I said Cornes - and indeed the whole club - was in the same boat 10 years ago. I was really surprised he has backed GA after bagging him for most of the year.

The other interesting article was Geoff Roach's on the AFC board.

You know that the Crows are travelling badly when GR starts having a go at us. Some of his suggestions of people who should be elected werent bad. However, he didnt suggest who should leave. That would have made his article much more interesting.
