It was a technicality, the rule is the ball has to be returned to the umpire...
99/100 times umps will just use common sense there.
Having said that, they probably owed Freo that one after that bs downfield free they gave the Pies in the 1st quarter.
I like it to when a free kick is paid if the player doesn't give it straight back or passes it to a teammate first it's fifty.
We just say the player was silly...

As does a score review. Just part of the game. But it definitely wasn't wasting time as the clock wasn't running. An umpire with a feel for the game would warn him and get the ball thrown up within a couple of seconds.
I would be mortified if one of our young players got done for that and it cost us a win.
