Brisbane's run from 2001-2004 is by far the best dynasty in the history of the game. No doubt about it.

Stuff and nonsense. The most underrated team in VFL/AFL history - the Melbourne team of the 50s/60 is a much greater "dynasty". Melbourne, playing in the premier competition in the sport, lost the GF in 54, won in 55, 56 and 57, lost in 58 (wooo hooo), and won in 59 and 60. Seven consecutive grand finals and five premierships - absolutely outstanding!

The Collingwood four-peat also won in 35 and 36 and i think lost a couple either side of the 27-30 flags, so I reckon they would have to get a mention, and certainly the Hawthorn side of the late '80s.

Add to that, Port Adelaide won 10 premierships between 1951 and 1965, plus we had 3 peats in 79, 80 and 81, 88, 89 and 90, and 94, 95, 96.

Port Adelaide is the ultimate dynasty.

And Footscray won 9 VFA flags in 20 seasons*, we can list them together.

Unfortunately for both of us they were in secondary competitions.

* seasons, not years, WW1 got in the way.

North Melbourne 94-00

7 consecutive preliminary finals (League record)

2 Pre-Season Premierships

3 Grand Finals

2 Premierships

They only won the two flags though, their nineties record is worse than ours. We at least made the finals every year, and I wouldn't be claiming that we had a nineties dynasty.

East Perth 5 premierships in a row and 7 in 10 years in the 20s as well as 3 in a row recently.

That is dynasty.

You want to talk about dynasties? Check out Saint Marys in the NTFL. They've won 22 premierships since joining the competition in the 50s, and had a golden run during the 80s and 90s, where they won 12 flags in 14 years.

A fair effort, but the ultimate dynasty is St George in the Rugby League - 11 straight 1956-1966 - say what you want about the sport, but that's an incredible run.

I have a book about the characters who played in that era. It was written in 1995 by Larry Writer and aptly titled "Never before, Never again."

Boston Celtics was pretty close, 1956-57 title, runner up in 1957-58, then 8 in a row in 1958-59 to 1965-66, missed 1966-67, but did the double in 1967-68 and 1968-69. I think Bill Russell played in all 11 titles. Definitely coached the last 2.

I'd say only Melbourne from 1955(54)-1960 would really count.

Maybe Hawthorn of the 80's aswell.

Well the 99 AFL Year Book lists us as the team of the decade, so according to that... North would be I think.

Well, the problem was that North finished the decade off better than we did, but our best years were in the early nineties, when the Roos were doing very little on the field. If they had have got over the Crows in '98 I would have conceded, but they didn't and pretty much ended up equal with us, their run of prelims countered by the fact we made the finals every year whilst they didn't, and I think we ended up with a better win/loss ratio. Plus we got screwed out of two home finals :p

We won more minor premierships, played and won more finals, spent more than double the weeks on top of the ladder (57 to 27), more weeks in the top 5 (166-112), less weeks below 10th (12-47), had more wins (156-145), had a higher winning percentage (65-61) and all that after playing more interstate games (124-38). You have to remember that not only did we make the finals every year, we also finished in the top 4 5 times (and would have been 7 had we been allowed our home semi finals in '96 and '99).

No draft, no salary caps, fewer teams in the competition.
I actually agree with ya now. Plus back then Defenders would have gotten away with kicking the forwards in the nuts. Brisbane of (2001-2002-2003, and 2004 runner up) was the greatest side in history.

None of that counts:p
Only VFL/AFL:D
since when does the name australian rules football constitute the vfl/afl, australian rules football is the sport, the AFL is a league which plays the sport, its like the poms trying to claim the EPL as soccer, when clearly they are just one league in the world out of many. victorians trying to convince every one else that football starts and finishes in their back yard lol.

I think it was after the 2003 GF win when somebody asked Leigh Matthews whether the Lions were one of the best dynasties of the sport.

He said something like Brisbane needs to win a few more to be able to be compared to Hawthorn of the 1980s, let alone Melbourne in early 1950s.

So while it is harder these days with professional sports, draft, salary cap etc, in Leigh's mind Brisbane's run wasn't the greatest.

Still damn proud of what my club was able to achieve though. :thumbsu:

What some people may not know is that the Collingwood flags of 1929 & 1930 (the 3rd & 4th in their 'dynasty') were achieved under a ridiculous system where the team at the top of the H&A ladder at the end of the season effectively had the right to play in the GF, irrespective of finals results.

Therefore in 1920 Collingwood were undefeated in the regular season (18 wins), lost the SF, but still played off and won their only other final (GF v Richmond). thereby winning the premiership.

Similarly in 1930 Collingwood finished the top at the end of the H&A season, won their SF, lost the next week in the PF, but nonetheless the following week played off in the GF against Geelong (the team that had beaten them in the PF).
