Probably a good move given we're playing in the west where Barlows running game will be valuable.

Feel a bit sorry for Bird though, being dropped after his best game so far.

From the eagles board:

IN: Hunter, Butler, Graham, Masten, Seaby, Davis, Nicoski
OUT: Ebert (ankle), Schofield, (thigh), Kennedy (knee), Rosa (ankle), Waters (suspended), Armstrong, McKinley

You can't help but laugh at their continuing misfortune. :thumbsu:

yes, very disappointing for bird, it must surely be for barlow's extra run on the big ground
not absolutely convinced it's the right move, though

i don't want to be gloating yet ... if at all
they'll fire up for us, and masten coming in is good for them
but i'd reckon there's a cloud over dean cox, with seaby being recalled when he's out of form and favour over there, according to the weagles board
i really REALLY hope hunter plays

Barlow for Bird is quite an attacking move.
Bird gets it in close and distributes it while Barlow will float around wing/forward flank being a link player with plenty of space to have a run and bounce.
I like Bird but this is a good move imo providing Ed plays well of course.

Definitely.. Especially with Waters out.. they'll need an enforcer of some sort to stand up to us 'big bad' Swans.. :D

Late change:

Out: Staker (cronic diarrhoea and vomitting attacks):D

In : Nicoski ( least he sounds like a footballer)!

Bird was always gunna have to pay his dues and they have been very patient. He is a year off top form yet

Barlow deserves it based on past experience... building team with taller bodies in the run home:thumbsu:

We look pretty strong, good to see Barlow get some game time! Eagles have a lot of outs and dont look to good on paper, expect Mckinley and LeCras to start though!
Saying that, these are the games that we really need to put the opposition away, stamp our authority!
I dont want to see the players just go through the motions, sucked into a close game, I'd like the Swans attack from the first bounce until the very end, and I expect a big win, I hope it happens!

I believe Roos hinted at droppping Craig early in the week regarding dropping players back to give them a run in the seconds. Disapointing for Craig considering the defensive role he has been playing and considering his best game mever was last. Huge fan of Craig......future more important than the present.

Staker out .. is that confirmed or not?

From what I've heard of the Weagles Nicoski hasn't been playing too well.

Much previous talk on here about when Bird was going to go back for run.

I think Roos has picked the right time. Craig has been inconsistent across the last few rounds but to send him back after a game where he went all right he can instill the young man with confidence he's going back for a higher purpose.

Bird's smaller frame meant it was always unlikely he would make the full debut season and by going back he can be given things to work on.

His kicking for one, it's not the worst but there is scope for much improvement of which he can focus on in Canberra. He';s also in fine company. Malthouse ensured Thomas did not have a full debut season either despite impressing.

Bird can also be told after what he has learnt in the seniors this year that he can learn to be a dominant small midfielder in Canberra and take it to be the key player.

Dropping Bird is not a negative, not for the swans, not for Bird. The big picture of his development should be looked at here.

He's probably not going to get a game for the twos this week, though, unless they put him back on a plane east tonight or tomorrow. The whole squad of 25 flew to Perth yesterday.

I won't be suprised if they do liz.

nah, if part of the reason he's been cut is to rest his poor young rookie body, then let him rest
let him enjoy the weekend off, watching the game saturday night, maybe from the coach's box, do him far more good than flying back alone to run around in the twos

Thats a point I'll accept. However a run in the magoos in the next couple of week should benefit his game.

This thread is about Barlow aswell, good for the team to get some game time into his legs, its a long season, and will be a tough finals series!

Great post :thumbsu:. Bird will benefit from going back to the ressies for a little bit to work on his craft. Unfortunately a lot of people seem to equate sending a player to the reserves with that player having played badly or done something wrong - not necessarily the case. Definately not a negative move.

The trouble is the standard he will be playing, though this week is at least against the top side in the ACT,thats if they take him back.
(this my opinion on the standard of the ressies)

I don't see how time in the reserves benefits a player like Bird.
His first few games showed he struggled with the pace of the game.
He was taking on players expecting to waltz around them but was tackled easily.
He has adjusted well so if he needs a rest then it is better he misses a game rather than going back to the reduced intensity of reserves football.

Agreed Barry,

I think its a little harsh to be honest. He has been allocated very defensive roles of late, which he has done pretty well with.

He needs time in the ones, not kicking around in Canberra. Remember early in the year when everyone was jumping on the play the youth wagon.

How quickly a few wins make us forget.

The Swans ageing midfield needs to be continued to be replenished and I thought we were doing it, definitely a step backwards. Cant see any positives in it, but its a forum and we are all entitled to an opinion.

As for Barlow, we need to play him as well imo.
