It would help his cause if he were in the leadership group now, but he isn't. Whether that's because he knocks back the opportunity or the players don't vote for him, it doesn't seem like he's captain material from within the club, no matter how much we as supporters love him.

Maybe "we'll make you captain" might be part of the Mundy contract offer - he's been a member of the leadership group for quite a few years now.

Would be a wonderful reward for a player that has never had it easy. Who could begrudge the decision but there might be another couple in line first.

Fyfe's got the emotional maturity, media savvy, competition respect and on-field presence to do the job.

Give it to the youngster when the sad day inevitably comes.

2017.
Whilst I agree with you on everything you say about Fyfe (he's the heir apparent to my affections when the sad day comes that pav retires... that's after I've safely been taken off suicide watch of course), but he isn't in the leadership group either. MdB has been there since he was 20 or 21 so presumably it's not an age thing.

Sandi and McPharlap as the two main deputies are clearly too old; MdB is not a good enough player; that leaves Mundy from the current leaders who have done a reasonable appreticeship in the leadership group, shown loyalty over their career, is an outstanding player in his own right... Maybe Mundy as an interim until Fyfe is ready?

I'm not advocating Mundy particularly, but Mayne, Johnson, Ballantyne, Ibbotson have been in and out of the group - and none of them scream 'captain' to me... and neither Barlow nor Fyfe have been in the leadership group at this stage, although I think one of those two would be the best candidate from the outside looking in. So really, that leaves Mundy in the short term IMHO...

Of course, I could be waaaaaaay off the mark. Wouldn't be the first time. ;)

I'm not certain how much weight is put on the leadership group as such though. Especially in a forward looking sense.

It's more of a recognition of past season deeds, club work and an on-field role more than anything.

I don't think Mundy is cut-out, or would particularly enjoy, the media committments especially.

I'd cut my own throat if I had to talk to Zempilas, Thomson or Readings each week.

I have noticed that Mundy seems to be focusing more on giving a good presentation in his media appearances. He has also been featuring more and more. I'd put a dollar on him taking the reins.

Maybe.

I hate threads like this. They are focussing on the worst day in the clubs future :(

After pav pulls up stumps, maybe end of next year. I seriously think Micky B will be out future captain. Never one for the flashy, but just a good honest player who typifies the "wharfie" spirit. I hope he gets the gig.
No no no Barlow is far to funny for that gig. We can't afford to lose that;)

Mundy spoke brilliantly this morning to Whateley and co. on ABC Radio about leadership and how you can spot a good leader.... He has clearly given it some thought.

I think Fyfe still lashes out when things don't go his way and he makes sure if he will get called for high contact that there is no debate, he really gets them.

Mundy should be left where he is.fyfe is A star, I honestly think Barlow should be the cap. His goal in the third q screamed of "captains goal". Fyfe way way way down the track.

There is no contract drama behind Barlow I hope he gets the gig he earned it

Mundy is leaving at the end of the year is he not
Have you got the good oil on this situation ?.

Sounds a bit like the rumours of Judd staying, ................................. just that, pie in the sky.

Could see Mundy doing it for say 2+ years, Barlow would be good to take over.

Bloody hell, you do all realise Pav aint going nowhere until he has completed the job !!!.

Was very much a tongue in cheek comment. Don't think mundy will leave not least because I doubt he could look pav in the eye and tell him he's going home

fyfe does have a bit of a temper on the field, which people on this board dont' seem to have noticed. Especially when he is getting tagged. Its why you could never put money on him for the brownlow.

So remind me again who "he's really got"?

Mundy is definitely becoming more of a voice in the public arena. Maybe Pav will complete his playing days as non-captain and Mundy commits to Freo and becomes captain??
