I could hardly watch the television coverage tonight because the commentators were so inane and one-sided both the match calling and the commentary. It truly is terrible and so unprofessional and unwatchable.

Brian Taylor and Wayne Carey must have the IQs of peanuts plus Wayne Carey obviously hate Hawthorn especially after Clarko took him on a few years ago.
But it's not just their anti Hawthorn bias but also the over the top exaggerated game calling seems to run with a pre-ordained media narrative. Eg Brian Taylor is repeated yelling about "the chaos ball"
It doesn't happen in any other major sport e.g. soccer and NFL NBA. Can I just pains me that we have to put up with such rubbish week after week.

the last quarter commentary was awful, they were legit acting like one-eyed Dees fans, i've never ever heard such biased unprofessional commentating in a game before, they sure got behind the Dees, not that i mind that they are behind a team thats in their first finals for a long time ect, but show professional courtesy to the Hawks supporters...

This is one of the best arguments for reducing congestion and improving the look of the game - the more boring it is the more commentators feel obliged to inject themselves into action, resulting in them spouting all manner of hokey inane crap.

That said, standards of professionalism have been declining for decades across the board in the AFL media. That a fat slurring drunk is allowed to co-anchor one of the highest profile AFL talk shows is indicative of how low standards have sunk.

Almost every neutral fan would have been barracking for Melbourne last night. Most of the audience probably loved the call.
Pity the Hawks fans last night.

Funny I was thinking the exact same thing - except I felt it was so one sided in Hawthorn's favour. Seriously it was all 'what can Hawthorn do', 'they're still in it.' Listen to the comments objectively. At one point BT is like 'thankyou son' when a Hawks player scored lol. Especially Bruce. And with Campbell Brown and Luke Hodge (and the Chief on Fox) makes it worse. For all the talk of fairytales, Hawks still the darlings at channel 7. Not saying they necessarily didn't want Melbourne to win or were sore over it like Ed when Collingwood loses, but it's ingrained. Like watching a Federer tennis match.
BT just likes to hype up a comeback, they do that for every game. He was doing it last week when Geelong were 23 points down with 3 minutes to go. Also in the last quarter they cried about every call that didn't go the dees way, in the third quarter when they replayed a Spargo high contact free, and there wasn't anything close to high and they just go, "...there's the high contact..." and move on. Or the Breust mark, the just mention it once and move on. But then when the opposite happens, a Melbourne player clearly drops a mark and it is called that way, they look at it once and say "Oooo that was a mark, this umpiring will be looked at". That is the main thing people are talking about.

So glad they don't pipe commentary into the ground. The Demon fan behind me tonight was insufferable enough.

As I mentioned in the game thread, the Demons need to circulate a few rule books among their supporters. Those next to my bay even booed the free for out of bounds on the full.

I was saying the same thing last night.

And the telecast only showed lingering crowd shots of Melbourne supporters, mixed in with lusty closeups of David Neitz.

I know the AFL has invested a lot of money in propping the Demons up again, but that was a bit much.

Commentators always “barrack” for the underdog

A perfect example is the call of the 2008 GF by all radio and channel 7

Go back and listen to the commentary in the “Victory Pack”, it’s beautiful :p

“Anti-Hawthorn” commentary is because of how dominant we have been over a long period of time

It’s no big deal, seriously

I have to agree. Last night I had to mute the call because of all the barracking for Melbourne. It was the same last week in the Eagles vs Collingwood match.

The unprofessionalism of the Australian football media continues to reach new lows. Poor match day calling, blatantly biased commentary, bizarre match day reports, lazy mistakes regarding a player’s age, draft pick, games played etc. lack of research and don’t start me on the blatant lies with no accountability regarding players changing clubs.

People dislike Hawthorn because they have been so successful for so long. That shouldn’t excuse barracking in the commentary box.

Melbourne did play better, take their chances, but for people to claim that not only were they not favoured by the 'rub' but that the umps favoured Hawthorn is plain wrong.
Interestingly Kingy is saying Melb should have lost by 3 goals and west coast will beat them by 10 if they turn up the same way
Gawn also said the thought his midfield went well and I didn't see that. Mitchell was winged and a less than 20 game Worpel was in at most centre bounces

Worps is our good news story of the year, despite his goal line brain fade

Disagree on ch7 2008GF

I had to mute last night. Carey’s whinging about the 2 legitimate frees which we received in the 4th was disgraceful. He is a disgusting piece of filfh who has a head so big it has its own moon.

Melbourne got a goal as a result of the non-HTB call against Viney (coupled with the soft high tackle call that followed it). The deliberate against Henderson also resulted in a goal.

We got one fortunate call with the Gunston HTB against Jetta in the first but that was cancelled out by the soft free Oliver got and the non mark to Bruest.

It just seems like they're barracking because you're barracking hard for the other team.

Not defending Carey the tool, but the sliding in below the knees rule is the biggest crock of shit this game has ever come up with. Both frees were there by the letter of the law and that’s the ridiculous part. If a player has the sack to throw himself in head first amongst flailing boots to get the bloody ball it should not be penalised, if the oppo player who decided to keep his feet and attack the ball happens to receive contact below the knees, fair play to all play on. Now if the player slides feet first to the same contest pay that free every time. It’s a stain on the game to see guys penalised for courageous play. No rule irks me more.. sorry. Rant over.

Its been getting worse since 7 got the rights outright again. It's intentional, as it allows them to then sell a story during the week.
They no longer have a monopoly on footy news due to the internet and 24hr news services, so they need to get people to tune in, which means creating their narrative.
Pumping up a young team does that. Just as tall poppy syndrome does - every sheep wants to see a good side fall.

It is also why they talk up the "holy Trinity." Nobody would tune in to see geelong, but everyone loves to see a champion, or rather criticise them

It just seems like they're barracking because you're barracking hard for the other team.
That's just the point, there shouldn't be "the other team" there should just be the game. Why are they focusing solely on one team. Coverage started 50 minutes before the game. Hawthorn didn't get a mention until the bounce.
