Wow.. big news for me this morning... hope it's true but was astonished to see the picks we're trading for him... 8 & 35 for him but when you consider last years draft etc.. 35 aint much in a weak draft..

St Brooks eh?.. Sonds good.. Tassie connection and all... sounds good to get a group of youngsters so close together.. looks like the club is making the right decision in deciding to build a very strong team for the future.. one that will bring us premierships...

Clarification on Interstate recruits :

A player DRAFTED to an interstate club is only bound to the club for the the time he is contracted e.g If a club contracts him for one year, then they can delist him at the end of the year.
If they contract him for more than one year they can still trade him (assuming he agrees) like every other player on the list.

Where the confusion is :
If a ROOKIE (as opposed to a player selected via the national draft and added to the senior list) is selected from another state then they are bound to that club for 2 years. As rookies can't be traded then once a club selects them they must kept for the full 2 years.

For whats is worth
Pick 8 is too much for Brooks.

There are some doubts about Brooks. He is very light and is not great in a pack situation, also doesn't control the game like a big man should. I know this takes time with the young talls but this is a concern.

The fact that Port wants to trade him after one year for the Number 8 pick also concerns me. Given it looks like French will go, then do they really need to do this trade? Ackland is not that good and Brogan really untested, so why trade your prior year 1st round draft pick for pick 8 the following year? Because they have doubts?

I like what the Sainst are doing and I would have like to seen them hold onto the pick and use it this year. They probably could have snagged somelike Gilham(thin and raw also) or McVeigh. Ok, these guys aren't ruckman but the Sainst aren't about making their side great from Day One. They are re-building and should stick to the policy of best available.

At pick 8 I'm not convinced Brooks is best available.

Still that's the part I don't get.

If Brooks was in this draft, you'd take him at 8. At least I would.

Hell many clubs were supposed to take him top 10 last year, in arguably, the strongest draft ever.

The question is. Is he worth more than a Johnson or McIntosh?

Those players will go around 6-10

short term

You can spot the coaches who feel they are under pressure re getting results. Schwab at Hawthorn and Williams at Port. Taking short term path at the potential expense of their long term future.

Thats where we differ. I would still put him somewhere between 12-20. You could argue he's no better than Lay(ock (accepted he has one year development with an AFL club under his belt) and most people are predicting that Lay(ock is between a 10-25 pick.

Last years draft was very strong for midfielders. There was only two quality talls - Hale and Brooks, and Brooks still managed to fall.

The difference being a plethora of READY MADE midfielders as opposed to big fellas who'll take a couple of years. We wanted Brooks last year but a player the quality of Dal Santo was still available. With Riewoldt and Kosi in the bank the midfielder was the preferred option. If Brooks was available this year he would undoubtedly be top 10 material and in the mix behind the 3 standouts.

All the Saints have done is guarantee themselves a quality big kid prior to the draft. They at this stage are stocked up on 10 year midfielders.

You guys seem happy with the deal, and I suppose thats the main thing.

But given French is going, Ackland is average and Brogan untested, why do you think Port are keen to do the deal (one year after taking him him the first round of a good draft)?

I'd say they think they can get a quality South Aussie (quality SA's were a bit light on last year). I'd also assume that because Brooks has to agree to the trade there must be some dissatisfaction on his behalf.

Who would you rather be behind? Primus or Capuano?

Brooksy played most of the year for the Roosters down here.
He`s big, raw, & can take a good grab.
He`s easily intimidated by big crashing ruckmen, such as Ryan O Conner who scared the living sheites out of him earlier this year.
Was only used as a second ruckman late in the season, as he looked as if he was tiring as the season wore on, mainly coming off the bench.
BUT.
He is only 17 I think & looked terriffic early in the season. I hope the saints don`t rush him in, I`d say he will be a couple of years in the making. Good luck to him.
Don`t f*ck him up early & he`ll pay dividends in the long run.

( you dont have any big rucks who would like a season at Prospect by any chance, guaranteed protection by the grog squad)
