savatage, obviously the Saints don't rate Paul Johnson, Hamish McIntosh or to a lesser extent Jason Layc ock who are perhaps the best of the taller blokes this year. I reckon taking Brooks is as much of a risk as using a single pick (either 3 or 8) on one of the three mentioned above.

Has Brooks even played SANFL seniors this year? Half the kids who get shipped over there end up getting stuck in the SANFL reserves for their first year.

Pick 3 is certain to be used on a midfielder I guess...

Yes he played SANFL seniors, and last year played VFL seniors also. Bit of a difference between that & TAC CUP, where the likes of Paul Johnson & Hamish McIntosh have shown glimpses of talent, but not that much IMO.

From Tassie Mariners. I dont think there's any two year rule which is specifies a player must stay at a single club. He'd get a two year contract and must have a guaranteed two years in the AFL system.

I'm glad he played SANFL seniors at least. He would've only played a couple of VFL senior games last year. That doesn't mean a lot really unless he performed really well in those games. If you like that argument you should draft Jason Layc ock because he played VFL games this year too.

McIntosh was 2nd in the TAC Cup goalkicking this season. You'll say he kicked bags of goals which got the figure up a bit...but you still have to kick them. I think the 3 big men I mentioned have been impressive in the TAC Cup this year.

St. Kilda are a very smart club, aquiring Brooks is a very good move for them. Brooks is probably the best ruckman going around in recent drafts, couple him together with Ball, Dal Santo, Clarke, Riewoldt, Koschitzke, etc and St. Kilda will have an awesome team in 3-4 years.

As a Port supporter I would be a bit upset to see Brooks go as we got him for a steal in last years draft at pick 15 but if we can get pick 8 for him and pick 34 aswell as trading for Pickett then I would be very very happy with this years trading period. Pick 8 could get us a very good player (P.Johnson?, B.Grima?) and 34 is a bonus.

As far as treating Brooks badly then it all depends on how he feels about it, I don't think we would trade him if he was dead set against it. He may see it as a great opportunity to get alot of AFL experience next year in the abscence of Everitt at St. Kilda and join a side that is going to be an absolute power house in the near future.

Porthos I'm not so sure about Brooks being a Power fan, I thought it was his family in Adelaide that followed the Power (His brother in law in particular I believe) not actually himself.

He played about 10 games for the Tassie VFL side, which is pretty good. Pretty good considering he more than held his own in those games.

McIntosh kicked bags of goals because frankly there aren't too many 200cm defenders in the TAC Cup. He's adequate in the ruck, nothing earth shattering.

Paul Johnson on the other hand, has been average in the TAC Cup & doesn't look a natural footballer to me. He happened to have a damn good carnival which obviously pushed up his rating. I'm not a big fan however.

Put it to you this way, last year if Brooks, McIntosh & Johnson were in the same draft you would've taken Brooks 10/10.

No comparison IMO, plus add a year of development on his name & it hardly puts his value down.

TAC Cup players can't play more than eight games in a year in the VFL. In any case I'm guessing he was right up near the maximum and could've perhaps played more if the rules let him.

I just fail to see a problem with what's occured (if it's occured that way). It's like people are saying, because a young player has had a year's worth of development at an AFL club that his value has diminished? That's what I'm not following here.

Regarding the VFL games, may have been 7. Either had 7 or 10 in mind, you're probably spot on there.

The Melbourne arguement is different, the value of draft picks are whatever you want them to be & should be isolated in that case purely as its motives are salary cap reduction. Besides we don't know the full implications of that deal yet, so hard to comment.

Our pick 3 will be used for a midfielder, considering the first 3 players pick themselves it would be a crime to waste pick 3 on a ruckman on a whim.

Pick 8 possibly, pick 8 possibly would mean that the intended ruckman may be chosen at pick 5, 6, or 7- leaving the club stranded in any case. On top of that, yes the club does rate Brooks at a better option than any of the 3 named options in the draft.

You argued well yourself, I just took note of your original comment about how ridiculous it was. Hardly think it was ridiculous at all!

I think you've argued your cases reasonably well.

I think it is all about getting the player they want and persuading the team he is on to give him up. Obviously St. Kilda see something in Brooks they don't in any of this years tall players. If Brooks was in this years draft he would probably go around the 8th pick or earlier, the pick 34 is to give Port some reason to give him up, teams don't give up young players just because they get an even deal for them.

You're looking at it from face value, you can't.

Everitt is 29 years old, with baggage & on $600,000 a year. Hawks are covering his whole salary - we are getting massive salary relief, and have the option of getting a 12 year ruckman with similar attributes (except this one can take a mark).

#1 I'm happy to get rid of the ****er in any case.

#2, if pick 24 is used to net a Bradshaw let's say. Then who's to complain?

I'm extremely comfortable with the deal.

I reckon it is bullcrap. Ive never heard that deal before. Look at the players just from the Crows that have been delisted after being drafted the year before:

1996 National Draft: Greg Dempsey - Deslited end of 97 after 1 year on the list
1996 National Draft: Ben Parker - Deslisted end of 97 with 1 year on the list

1998 National Draft: Clint Kirey - Delisted end of 99 after 1 year on the list
1998 National Draft - Lucas Herbert - Delisted end of 99 after 1 year on the list

1999 National Draft - Balraj Singh - Deslited end of 2000 after 1 year on the list.

So unless this rule has come in in the last year or so then there is no such rule.

I wish people (not you footyman) would stop giving s**t to Barry Brooks. The guy has major wraps on him. He is very highly touted. He was rated by everyone as by far and away the best ruckmen in the draft last year.

Yes footyman - Barry played EVERY game in the SANFL SENIORS for North Adelaide this year. He did fairly well but spent a lot of gametime on the bench due to Norths no. 1 ruck Lucas Herbert being a fairly good player.

Thanks, thats good to know. We don't hear a lot over here in Victoria about the SANFL (maybe Fox Footy could start showing some SANFL and WAFL games next season). Sounds like a good effort from Barry because some ruckman can be raw and have to spend a season developing in reserves. To step up and play SANFL seniors all year shows he has something already.

I will be devastated beyond recognition if we get rid of Brooks like this. Bugger picks 8 and 35. Pick 35 will be useless to us considering the supposed lack of talent in the draft. Id much rather keep Brooks.

The guy has most of his family here, he has been a life long Port supporter and was the best ruckmen to come out of last years draft. He played every SANFL game in the Seniors for North this year and did alright. The kid has talent. He is still only 18.

I will feel very bloody sick in the stomach and will most likely be reduced to tears if this deal goes thru.

If it goes thru then i will be writing a very abusive letter to the club outlining my absolute disgust at their lack of decision making skills and giving away the best bigman to come out of the last few drafts away for two picks in the worst draft in years.

Huh? Of our ruckmen who would have played next year only French will leave. So that leaves 4 pure ruckmen all who have AFL experience who could play, in the unlikely event of 2 ruckmen going down we would still have 2 ruckmen left, we will still have more ruck options than any other club next year.

As for Brooks, I don't think we have shafted him, if he doesn't want to leave he won't.

Since Brooks would have been on a two year contract wouldn't he have to had to OK the deal. Fotr example Heffernan didn't want to go to Brissy so he vetoed the trade.

This means if true, Brooks would have had to say yes to the trade.

A lot of Saints fans had suspected that Dean Brogan was the ruckman the club had had their eye on but it appears that it's Brooks who we are after.

Brooks was huge news this time last year, touted as the premier young ruckman along with Hale. I'd be rapt if we could get him to the club. I don't necessarly think we have to go for a short term solution as others have thought. Knobel was admirable with his ruckwork last season after being forced into the side through injuries. He'll get better. Chris Oliver is a kid who has potential and if Matthew Capuano can put two games together withough falling over and doing a knee or dislocating a collerbone he might be OK. Justin Koschitzke is 197cms and is very athletic and will get a chance too. The point is Barry Brooks is a talented young tall and you can't expect to pay little to get someone like that. Trading those picks are worth it if he wants to come to Moorabbin.

He'd already be at the club if our recruiting staff stuck to the St Kilda phantom draft picks, selected at #13 by Savatage and myself.
