Bartel's in trouble

Now, let me start by saying I think Bartel shouldn't be suspended. It was apparent to me that he tried to stop and minimise contact with the player with his head over the ball. This was in contrast to incidents like the Beau Waters one (and indeed Jade Rawlings yesterday).

But...

It has come at the worst possible time. There is more scrutiny this weekend over head high contact than ever. Every media outlet is talking about the issue and highlighting the Bartel and Rawlings incidents to justify their points.

Another thing counting against Bartel will be that, although he slowed down and perhaps intended to avoid contact if possible, he braced himself for contact by turning side on and tucking his arm in - the classic pose for the delivery of a bump.

I think the incident will be classified as high contact (two points), medium impact (two points), negligent (one point) and in play (no points) equating to 125 demerit points. I think Bartel has 75 demerit points from a tripping offence last year which increases the penalty to 200 points. If he pleads guilty he could have the charge reduced to 150 points or a 1 week suspension.

Even if the MRP says it was low impact it will still be 131.25 points and a 1 week supension.

Well, Ablett did beat a frivolous non-report that just wasted everyone's time, so maybe Bartel will be lucky too. He hasn't been reported yet.

Andrew Maher and Michael Christian need to grow some gonads. Of all the piddling incidents to sook about... Sheesh.

In this day and age, it seems that bumps that would not have raised an eyebrow five years ago get weeks - if he made contact with the head (I still haven't seen the replay yet), then I wouldn't be surprised if he gets made an example of. The media seems to have an insatiable appetite for bull**** reports these days, and the tribunal is more than happy to feed it.

Did he actually make contact with the head though? On the Footy Show this morning they were saying he actually made contact with his opponent's shoulder. If that was the case he might get off, but he has been suspended for something similar before so that might go against him. Let's just pray to Gazza senior that he gets off.

I noticed in the Ablett one last week they included body contact which was worth one point under their crappy ratings system

I haven't seen the Bartel one yet.

I think Bartel will get a week, considering the 70 points that was mentioned earlier.

If he gets more then a week, then the tribunal is just plain inconsistent.....the head should be protected, but you can't just let a few go then go down hard on these ones just because of recent incidents.

Btw, i agree with the views of the media, hyping it up like it is a slow news week.

It looks like if someone's got thier head over the ball you need to let them collide with your front and become vulnerable.

If you turn and brace yourself you'll be screwed.

It'll all blow over soon enough. I remember when Richard Osbourne (sp?) clashed heads with a teammate at sydney vs the mighty blue & white hoops. Everyone was calling for helmets to be worn.

This is what is annoying, Michael Christian and the other tosser sitting there trying Bartell before he has a chance to go to the tribunal. It was obvious that contact was made to the shoulder, none to the head. So if he gets a week or so it is because of the other two bumps gone wrong this weekend, i.e. Rawlings.

So like the Ablett charge, when the head of the tribunal owned up that he took a harder approach after the contact to Caracella, Bartel will most likely go for at least 1 and maybe 2.

Let's hope the Cats take it to the tribunal with a good lawyer, as contact was made to the shoulder not the head, which removes most of the penalty points.

Peverill was not hurt in the slightest. He did not remonstrate and neither did his team mates.
But Jimmy will probably go for 2. Our game is getting softer by the week.

He'll only get 1 at most. If you look at my grading of the charge, it's hard to see that it could be any different.

In the old days, when there was a suspect incident, we'd say, he'll go for 2 or 3 or, nah he'll get off. Now you have to look at it the way they do - grading the charge.

I can't see a circumstance where he could get more than 1. Unless he challenged it at the tribunal and lost because the 200 activation points would apply - 2 weeks.

Bartel has been charged with engaging in rough conduct against Essendon tagger Damien Peverill during the final quarter of the match on Friday night.

The incident was assessed as reckless (two points), low impact (two points) and high contact (two points), constituting a level two offence and drawing 125 demerit points.

Bartel's record at the tribunal in the past three years, which has seen him suspended for two matches, saw his penalty increased to 137.5 points but an early plea will reduce the penalty to 103.13 points and a one-game ban.
