Ben Graham Fireworks Display

227 and I talked about our "Thunder from down under" in our TC reports, but the display he put on in camp on Tuesday night deserves it's own thread. First, he has seemed to abandoned that tumbling hard to catch punt that was good for 40 to 43 yards, and instead came out hitting torpedoes, the Aussie name for what most punters in the NFL use, the spiral. Graham said last year he didn't like to use it because it was easier to shank. Well, Benny has been doing some work this off season.

They set up at our end of the field, and Ben is hitting from the 15 under a simulated rush. The first thing we notice about Ben's new weapon, the torpedoe, is the hang time. Last year he was running 4.0 to 4.5 seconds.... good hang times in the NFL. We start counting..... each punt is up for a minimum of 5 seconds, most closer to 5.5, some even getting very near 6 seconds!

That can't be right... count again... and again... same result.

So, even though they look long, I'm thinking they must be short for those hang times... now I count the yardage. No, that can't be right... count again. They are consistantly coming down at the 20 to 25 yard line! I redo my math. I must be screwing this up.... same result. 60 to 65 yards in the AIR! Those are 52 to 57 yard punts he's launching! He hit one that was just absolutely sick... 67 yards, and it had to have gone 80 feet high! I'm telling you, these punts would clear 6 story buildings!

I have never, EVER seen punts like these before. Maybe the rare wind aided oddity in the NFL, but this was in a mild cross breeze, and one after another after another. I actually had trouble believing what I was seeing. I kept recounting the yard markers. Kept timing his hang times. It was a jaw dropping display.

If he continues this way, he's going to shatter the NFL punting records.... not just break them, DESTROY them. Again, if he continues, he is a sure thing to make the pro bowl. I wouldn't blame you if didn't believe me, but 227 saw it too. This wasn't just a few punts.... he hit about 15 of them. Yes, he had an occasional 45 yard punt too.... but in the NFL, that is considered to be an excellent punt. 55 yards is just sick. The man is a machine, with a rocket launcher for a foot.

Very nice, thanks for sharing it. Good to see he's having success over there.....in the greatest city in the world as well.

Here are a few more paragraphs, a little more info.

Section227
"Graham was really booming them last night. I was counting the hang-time in "One elephant, two elephant..." etc. Almost all of his punts have 5 1/2 seconds of hang-time! It doesn't seem to matter whether they wind up slightly short in distance, the hang-time is there. He was not displaying that weird, Australian, hard-to-catch ball that he experimented with last year. These were more straightforward, "normal" punts. T-Bird counted almost 60 yards on some of these. Of course, some were shanked or short for one reason or another, but even those had hang-times of over 5 seconds. Almost every one! He's just an incredible punter and we're really lucky to have him."

"To add to 227's post about Graham..... he was hitting the ball at the 15... but they were spirals, not those tumbling kicks he was doing last year... the tradition NFL punt. Most of them were being fielded at the 21 or so. So, these punts were going 60 to 65 yards in the air, with absolutely reeee-diculous hang times. Those are 50 to 55 yard punts! Darn near 6 seconds of hang time. They looked very much like a MLB pop-up, height wise. I've NEVER seen punts like that before... not ever, not last year,, OK, maybe the odd ball NFL punt that was with the wind, but these were in a cross breeze. It was sick. In fact, I kept recounting the yards... because it wasn't believable. I kept redoing my math, thinking "that aint right".... but it was. Sure, he had some 40 yard punts too, (not many at all) but the hang time was still there.

Graham.... I was REALLY surprised that he seems to have abandoned that tumbling punt, which was reliable for 40 to 43 yards or so. He's doing torpedoes now, exclusively. But, his distance and hang tome is dopey stupid sick ridiculous good. I'd have to say some of those punts went as high as 60 feet..... maybe higher. I'm talking about going over a six story building. He had one.... it went over 65 yards, and had to be 80 feet in height. Perfect spiral. Ben did not take the off season "off". He didn't like the torpedo last year because it's easy to shank, but he also knew if he could be consistant with it..... he'd be very good. Well, so far, he looks better than that.... like I said, I've NEVER seen punts like his yesterday. If he can do this in the regualr season, he will SHATTER the punting records.... I mean that. DESTROY the records. That was also done under simulated block rushes, so it wasn't like he had all day to get it off either."

Glad to hear he is going so well, I've always liked him and I don't begrudge his decision to follow a dream and set his family up for the rest of their lives. 2005 would have been a hell of a year with him but he put in a decade of service and had already delayed his nfl career for the Cats.

The Jets are now my second favourite team behind Dallas.

Aw man, too bad American football is played in summer.... I'm going over to NYC in winter. =[

No, American football is playe in winter. Their winter (our summer).

On ya Benny, good to hear.
I should see if I can get down to NY for a game this season, it would be wicked to see him bombing massive barrels. Gotta get to a Patriots game first.
Also, the Jets have the equivalent of the population Geelong on the waiting list for season tickets...no idea how to get some.
Oh yeah, he's a real good bloke too. Go the Jets.

The Jets and the Patriots have a rivalry that makes Collingwood and Carlton look like a family picnic.

Good for Benny. I wish he'd opted for another season in the hoops, but he might have missed his chance and I don't begrudge him his success at all. Good luck to him.
