I said weeks back he reminded me of Sam Gilbert from St Kilda.

Nothing makes me think differently.

Raking left foot kick / zone buster - check
Good reading of the play - check
Being used as link man in defence - check
Can take a defensive contested mark - check
A little susceptible to a quick one-on-one contest - check

I don't see the Fletcher comparisons as clearly, though the Fletcher model post 2006 has been more the zoning defensive rebounder rather than Presti-esque stopper.

Reid is without doubt a very good future prospect, and a capable CHB in our current backline.

I also notice he is keeping his feet more, so must have got the stops in and listened to the BigFooty critics. :thumbsu:

In terms of Rising Star it really is an open field when you have Hanneberry (who looked decidedly ordinary this week) as the clearcut favourite.

I give Chopper some sort of chance if he holds down CHB for us.

Because he didn't look useless as a foward. Looked good on debut as a 17 year old foward. Took a few really good contested marks etc. Played against St Kilda and looked handy at worst. Had a horror game couple of games and then was one of the better players on the ground in the game against Carlton which included that horror set shot and from then on has been develop and used as a defender. On that day he was the most dangerous foward on the ground and has looked more dangerous then pretty much every foward on our list. Which is hardly looking useless

One Word

CONFIDENCE

People on Big Footy think if the kid isnt a star in his first 3 games his a dud most young players need to get confidence some will make it some will not but they only way we can find out is if they do get a shot they need a few games to find there feet and we have given Reid Dawes and Macaffer that

Reid looks like he will make it into a 200 gamer

Dawes looks like he will be a key forward for a while to come

Macaffer dont think he can be a main 22 player happy to give him another year or 2

Looked Dangerous but definitely not on the Scoreboard where it counts

I was actually thinking that at the footy the other night, that he looked like a younger, leaner version of Sam Gilbert, and if you called it weeks ago, gratz.

Amazingly, when you look at their height and weight, they are almost the same, in fact Reid is listed as "heavier".

Gilbert = 194cm, 94kg
Reid = 195cm, 99 kg

The one thing I noticed the other night, and looking at that weight of 99kg, is that Reid is bloody strong, especially one on one in "grappling" contests.

This is where he may even have an edge over Gilbert in the future, as Gilbert plays more of a loose man role then a one one one role most of the time. (and does it better then anyone).

We have a Centre Half Back, I called that about 4 weeks ago, and no one can dispute that now.:D

I actually posted a while back that the game against the Hawks will be his biggest test... and something I look forward to as it will in my eyes either teach him a lesson in how much he neeeds to improve or be the making of the young man.

Ever since I heard he was playing down back and doing well I've always thought that he could be our answer to stopping Franklin.

Could go with him up the ground and def has enough pace to match him.

Since his early games down back I've hoped he is the answer for not just Buddy but Nick Riewoldt.

A combination of a united backline (code for help from Presti, Heath, Harry and Max), a midfield winning the contested ball (and not giving up quick entries to opponents) and Reid and I think we will do well.

I was interested when Reid was not played against St Kilda and Presti was preferred. Presti did a great job that night, but I would be backing Reid in for first crack in a few weekends.

That I think is the make or break.

What is interesting will be if Anthony starts looking to line up down back. If he keeps up that form, what is the back six line-up? A fair few combos.

Example 1.

B Anthony Presti Maxwell
HB O'Brien Reid Shaw
Int Toovey

And that's leaving out Goldsack, Rambo and Buckley.

I think it is ridiculous to expect Reid to beat Buddy or Riewodlt at this stage. Jeez, give the kid a break and at least another 30 games before you heap those expectations on him.

He's being eased along and rightly so. Yes, play him on the White's, Grant's etc but don't expect him to beat or match it with the games elite key forwards yet!

QFT

Reid has no chance against a Riewoldt, right now one of the things Reid nearly needs to work on is his tank Riewoldt is probably the best foward in the league at just burning defenders with work rate, on top of that Riewoldt has a reach and strength advantage. He is a long way from defending a Riewoldt.

Franklin has owned every defender whose name isn't Josh Gibson, he is close to unstoppable when he is on song. Whilst Reid projects as a very good match up for him long term I wouldn't expect too much. Franklin has a huge turning circle advantage over Reid.

Why wouldn't we try him on those two though? Nothing else has worked.

Presti was doing ok before Rooey went down last time but the time before that Presti was beaten convincingly.

No one has come close to Franklin in our side since he has been in his prime. Has always torn us a new one.

I just think it could be worth a shot. Good for his experience too. If he gets flogged we can change him, like any other defender.

Presti was beating Riewoldt very well before he went down (with the help of O'Brien and Maxwell zoning high where he leads). I'm talking comprehensively.

Who else have we got to worry about? Koschitzke? Reid needs to work on his one on one bodywork and a confidence booster against a big bloke like Kosi who is at an all time low atm but still can grab a contested mark or 2.

The players Reid is developing his game on at this stage will one day be the more premier forwards of the competition and he is beating them at this stage.

More or less the players he is playing against now are the players he'll always play against, bar Franklin who he is not ready for but will eventually be the man to play on him.

We all saw what a half fit J Brown did to Reid a few weeks back. He's not ready for this.

This is what development is all about.

I don't find it any worth Reid learning on a player like Nick Riewoldt while we have our old warhorse to take him at this stage.

However having Reid available in the football side to help zone off and ease the pressure on players like Presti will be help in combating these elite forwards.

I think our setup with Reid is very promising. Much more promising than Brown taking the 2nd best forward as Reid seems to be a smarter, and more damaging player.

Brown had to play senior football before his time. We all look at Nathan and think, gee this boy is 100+ kilo's, his body is ready for footy, but in reality, his body and mind still aren't ready to take the players Presti has been able to take.

I think the job he did while Presti was out was very very satisfactory and showed great signs for our future, but he is not the player that should play second fiddle to Presti and be able to play on these players who play a role further up the field where as Reid is made for this.

Brown will have to play the Presti role on the big strong forwards.

Once Presti is ready to hang up the boots, we have a near ready replacement.

Our defensive structure couldn't be in better hands right now and is really set for 10 years, and we've been very lucky to have players like Maxwell and O'Brien around whom have been able to take the 2nd tall if needed in order for our developmental team to really develop our next 10 year of defensive player.

All in all I don't think I have seen 2 players like Brown and Reid who look to be able to play those 2 different key defensive posts.

Having Brown as a pure stopper and Reid as a stopper/attacking defender is going to be out of this world once they have both been in the system for 6-7 years.

Having the players like O'Brien, Maxwell, Shaw and even Toovey around them is going to make our defence such a strong component in years to come, and a reason why this side will be around the top rungs of the premiership ladder for a number of years.

It seems as though Jack Anthony may be refreshed as a defender to, which is something I am really looking forward to following. I think this move could be very handy for our football club.

As much as we have argued on this board about Jack and his role within our side, it seems that his days as a forward, a permanent full forward anyhow are numbered, and reinventing Jack as a defender playing behind the footy could turn out the be a huge bonus.

We know he has talent, we know he likes to compete and we know he wears his heart on his sleeve. It's amazing how playing behind the footy can actually take so much pressure off a player.

I predominately player as a forward when I played the great game and I always liked to get back behind the footy every now and then as it really has the ability to bring you into the game. Being accountable for a player is sometimes easier, then having a player so accountable for you. All the niggle and close checking can really trouble you as a forward, especially when it hasn't always come naturally to play that end of the field.

Anthony's body type is good. We seem to be seeing forwards now ranging from 195cm to even over 200cm having success, where as key defenders can range from 190cm to about 195cm and seem to be more comfortable. I think defence is his go from this point.

I always felt that if Anthony was to be a forward, he really needed to work on his leading abilities and he seemed to struggle in this area. I always felt that he generally kicked goals from floating over the pack and taking a couple of grabs. Obviously the weapon he has is accurate kicking and that's why he was given his opportunity up forward, and it was a good way to fill that forward gap for the time being, but now we have Dawes improving his game, and it will continue to improve, but not with Anthony up forward it won't.

I think if we're to actually go anywhere with this unit, and we can, the key component that needs to be sorted is that is that key forward to support Travis Cloke, and within time hopefully it's Cloke supporting Dawes and he can become the dominant forward.

I was a serial pest when it came to bagging Dawes and I absolutely rapped up Reid whenever I got the chance. It now looks as though I can start rapping up both of them.

I am really starting to see a lot more in Chris Dawes and for me to admit I was wrong seriously means that Dawes is actually showing something when I look in at him. As far as Reid is concerned I have been his biggest fan on BF since he was drafted because I could see the potential ability he has.

And sorry for rambling. I'm on pretty heavy pain patches and they make me pretty amped up and talk a lot.

It's like a nicotine patch, but morphine.:thumbsu::D

Your post is too long and attention spans aren't up to it anymore.

Reid can take Franklin, Brown is the wrong body type for him, in the same way Fletcher use to get creamed by Sav Rocca.
