I’ve been a fan of Gaff’s, but with Eagles mates turning against him it has made me re-think this. His score involvement/assist/goal numbers are terrible for the amount of stats he gets. He is behind Jack Sinclair, for example, in all these categories despite averaging close to 10 more disposals per game. His defensive numbers are also apparently terrible.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t get him, but I would be weary of opening the chequebook too much for him, could be fool’s gold. We don’t want an unaccountable player who pads his stats across half back. I’ll have to watch him a bit closer this year, but at this stage I’d rather keep our coin and go for Shiel next year.

Ide take that in a heartbeat ...... Cripps/Kennedy/Ed/SPS would love knowing their hard work at stoppages was going to a smooth mover like Gaff. We would probably see (plucking a figure out of my arse), +10% in scoring just from his boot into the F50 alone.

Only thing is, he turns 26 mid this year ... so not 100% sure if the demographics are right.

He is exactly the kind of player we need. He runs hard each way and creates a lot of space. He is an excellent link up player, with very good disposal who gets it around 30 times a game. His contested numbers are low, but he is an outside player. He gets a lot of the ball on the outside (top three AFL level) and uses it well. His outside game is elite. We have contested players with Cripps, Dow, E Curnow and Kennedy.

I would be more than happy with a 3 million/ 4 year offer, front loaded in years one and two.

That is basically the less than the salary of Simpson (600 odd), Thomas (300 odd) and Rowe (300 odd) , all of whom are likely to retire this year. People need to remember we also lost Bryce Gibbs last year, and that has freed up 750,000 PA at least.

There is no way the Eagles would match that offer either, as it is close to band one compensation. At a bare minimum they would receive an end of first round draft pick for him with band 2 (pick 19) in a super draft, and seeing as they traded this year's first round draft pick to the Suns last year, they would let him walk for that compensation.

If we could land Gaff as a F/A plus grab someone like Isack Rankine with our first round pick (giving us two very offensive outside midfielders, with Rankine also ready to go next year) plus also have two 2nd round picks and a couple of handy father sons this year, I would be very bullish indeed about our list next year, and going forwards.

Those two would complement Cripps, Kennedy and Dow perfectly.

Im confident that we could safely afford Gaff as a free agent on that kind of coin and still have enough money left to not only bring in another free agent next year like Shiel on similar money +, but also safely accommodate for our kids and fight off a free agency offer towards Cripps in a couple of years.

I hope we are in this up to our eyeballs.

We traded Gibbs out last year. Over the course of the next 24 months leading up to Shiel as a free agent, we will lose Simpson, Rowe, Thomas, ASOS to retirement. We have been paying the minimum 95% of the salary cap for the last three years. During the three years the salary cap got the biggest increase it has gotten in ages last year (20 percent).

We were able to pay out Palmer and Smedts last year and still remain well under the cap.

About our only pressing contract need is at the end of 2021 when we will have to pay Cripps a sizeable amount of money to fight off FA (He will receive offers in excess of 1 million odd PA from the Eagles as a FA at that time; 5 year 6-7 million type stuff).

We have bucket loads of cash to splash. I fully expect us to extend Cripps contract by a further two years this year (up to 2021), taking him up to that free agency window. Even after we do that, we will easily have well upwards of a million left over this year alone.

If we can't attract a free agent this year with the excess coin I would expect us to extend Paddy Dows contract by 2 years in addition to Cripps and maybe a few others, and then load up for a massive free agency and trade period next year.

Last year we had enough wriggle room in the salary cap to pay out Billy Smedts and Palmer, the latter of whom we took on as a salary dump in any event.

In addition we extended the contracts of heaps of kids last year by a few years. From memory only Polson and Kerr remain unsigned at the end of this year.

I fully expect we will be using a portion of our salary cap this year to front-load a deal for Cripps to extend him for another two years to 2021 (which takes him to his eight year free agency window). I also expect Dow getting a two year contract extension sometime this year as well.

We have been using our extensive room in the salary cap to lock in kids on long deals and stabilise the playing list. Even after doing that we have been paying only 95% of the cap and have banked a lot of it.

After locking those two away we are largely done. We have a few players coming out of contract over the next few years that we need to be mindful of, but we have more than a enough cap space left over to heavily front-load a deal for a free agent this year and next.

Add to that the likely retirements over the next two years of Simpson, ASOS, Rowe, Thomas and Lobbe and we can safely a ford a big name free agent this year and next year and still have plenty of wriggle room left to Pay Cripps, Docherty and the kids what they deserve going forwards.

We have been really smart with our list management and salary cap management over the past few years. We will be major players in the trade and free agency market over the next 2 to 3 trade and free agency periods.

Just as planned.

I would expect us to make a massive play for Gaff (Melbourne are probably the front runners though) and next year for Dylan Shiel. I hope we also attempt to entice Lochie Neale from Fremantle but will have to trade for him next year.

Those three are the kinds of players that we need.

Trouble being only Gaff is available and is only somewhat attractive as a FA that fits our list profile this year. Next year may be more attractive but only if clubs are unable to extend contracts before they expire.

Miss one of them and we could also look to trade in a gun player next year.

No imo he doesnt have much of a defensive side downhill skier more like it . He's what we wanted Boekhorst to become . Most sides have one or two however .

He's essentially what we hope LOB turns into.

Correct he is exactly that, anything more is just a plus. Gaff is an AA wingman, if LOB can reach those heights id be very happy.
