Menzies was a poor economic manager too. In 1952, Menzies recorded substantial inflation. As noted by Whitlam in a speech in 1997.

Inflation was a issue in the booming postwar economy, yes.

In fact the Menzies era was one of the longest periods of economic prosperity in Australian history, lasting from the late 1940s to the early 1970s (about when Gough took the reins). Very similar to the long boom experienced right through the Howard era, that went crashing down under Rudd and Gillard. Which is all, pure coincidence of course.

Building infrastucture in a booming economy experiencing rapid population growth.

Hence the hypocrisy of the comments made by the right about recent Labor Governments.

They did the same thing.

Go into debt, build infrastructure for rabid population growth in what has been for the most part, a booming economy.

At least Menzies did leave a legacy, Howard's was one of intolerance to migrants.

You'd just expect the GG to act like a man and confront the government before doing it instead of holding meetings behind everyone's back (including the Queen) like a coward.

Any chance of acting like a man and quoting what the Bolt article said that led you to start the thread?

The economic boom that ended in the 1970s ended everywhere around the world in the wake of the 1973 energy crisis, Whitlam had nothing to do with it. Just as in the same manner as Rudd had nothing to do with the global financial crisis that hit the world shortly after his election. Timing can be everything and Howard hit the jackpot. Keating bore the pain of the early 1990s recession and made changes to the economy which began to flow through towards the end of his term, Howard and Costello rode that wave and the global economic growth that followed pretending to be economic masters, when in fact they weren't, just look at Howard's efforts as Treasurer in the Fraser government, he was hopeless.

Menzies was also very protectionist, tarrifs increased during his time in government considerably to protect jobs and company profits those stiffling productivity gains, thus leading to problems felt in the 1980s when an uncompetitive manufacturing sector started losing those tarrifs and began a slow and painful demise which is still continuing, as a result of creating an insulted industry where change wasn't needed for 30 years and the opportunity to become a value adding manufacturing sector was really lost and countries like Germany took it on and have reaped the rewards. (I blame both unions and lazy corporates for this equally).

My issue was the fact that the preivous day he had blasted the Greens for posting a picture of Whitlam with a Greens logo saying it was in bad taste to use a Labor icon in such a way straight after his death, that is where my problem lies. If Bolt had waited until this week I wouldn't of had a problem, but to turn around 24 hours after one article slaming a group he openly dislikes he does something no better, the hyporcrasy of the man knows no bounds. (can't seem to locate his articles from the day before though)

Your selective view of things just destroys your cred. If you werent so one eyed & biased you might have something of value to say. I'm just not sure if you do. Australia has had all sorts of economic ups & downs, most due to world circumstances as we are mainly a commodity trading nation. We had a recession in 1961. Menzies held power by 1 seat, so much for 30 years of bliss under pig iron Bob.
To ignore the facts like that & of the oil shocks of 1973 & of the GEC is just pig ignorant.
Now the A$ has come down some 15% & we see some small positives in general economic activity are stirring, you will unashamedly attach that to Abbott I suppose!

Ok so Menzies was poor at running an economy but governed for 23 years. Thank goodness Gough came in and repaired all the damage, in his 2.5 years.

How much of that debt was accrued in the writing of $900 cheques to everyone? It was part of a $42,000,000,000 programme, but obviously not that much.

Rudd will be spoken in the same breathe as Whitlam in 20 years.

Rudd had many flaws but he did think big.
No way will he be mentioned in the same way.
Thinking big without understanding costs, consequences and his ego were his biggest flaws.

In truth Rudd was visionary. The water and power security, roads rail and Port projects he built with the stimulous money will underpin our economy for decades.

Oh wait!

Nah but he held improve our school facilities, which will provide educational and community benefits for decades.

Whether people like it or not those "school halls" are actually infrastructure.

Pig Iron Bob wasn't a freaking Prime Minister. He was a steward for her maj in buckingham palace.

If we had a leader of vision during his leadership, instead of an inward looking, commonwealth worshipping, god-flogging dolt, this country would be now be pretty much economically bullet proof.

So yeah, Gough made some **** ups, (but not in the way you are portraying, as you are just being a campaigner), but menzies completely stuffed our future by being a hand-wringing sop.

I see your all relaxed from your day off. Welcome back

I'm glad you agree that Menzies was the worst PM in our history.

18 years, collectively, of putting the economy in angel gear and sticking his tongue up lizzies clacker.

Its too late to crawl to me now!:p Gough gave the country what it wanted at the time, a quick shove out of the 1950's mentality. The last straw was Silly Billy McMahon.
Its just that not everything Liberal is right.
