How would you describe a 'consultancy culture'?
A) Where leaders are not creative enough to form their own strategic objectives.

B) so they commission someone else to do the work for them, which results in a written report

C) The report becomes the marketable outcome and deflects from the hard decisions regarding appointments and day to day management and masks that the leader probably does not know what to do.

Internal and external reviews are commonplace in well run organisations

No, they undertake their own analysis in determining strong and weak links

It's dependent on the requirements within said industry/organisation

Spending time in every area and with each and or majority of individuals to ascertain continuity of system and people and determining level of effectiveness

Then, make recommendations on the above

So you support the President of the club outsourcing his responsibilities. A leader who sat on a board for 8 years should know the organisation well enough to set its direction. THE IRONY IS SAYERS CONSULTANCY DOES IT FOR EVERYONE ELSE. It is interesting how you generally defend the establishment and the staus quo. If you have been right all these years, why do we sit in 14th position, having not played finals for a decade.

In a well run organisation, external reviews are critical, fresh eyes, no bias

I have always been impartial and as I have no knowledge of the inner sanctum. Nor am I an advocate of status quo

A phase in time is never reflective of an situation, and since 2018, we have been on an upwards trend.

This year has been poor, but hopefully there is enough strength internally to back the long term strategy and or adjust/change aspects to improve outcomes

I don't want to derail too far but this is the ideal of audit and consultancy.

The pejorative of consulting culture is when it goes too far and anything tricky, boring or hard is outsourced at exorbitant cost, far more than the cost of maintaining corporate knowledge internally.

McKinsey and the work it does for government worldwide is a perfect example of the second one imo.

I welcomed the external review lead by sayers because as a club we've been obsessed with 'Carlton people' despite a board at war for two decades and a notable lack of success.

Yes but also I think in many cases one gets a consultancy audit/ report/ etc as a means of challenging ones own ideas and or limited knowledge.
It doesnt mean the original ideas are wrong and it also prevents any maverick kind of decision making.

So Autocracy is wrong and so is Consultancy. Doesnt leave much hey.............

Like everything, you need a balance.

You either don't understand consultants and their purposes or had a bad experience once upon a time and have maintained the rage. Sure the stuff about the club being unsuccessful whatever - fine. Accurate but the attacks on 'consultancy culture' and the board for using an external review are pretty silly. That's what the top firms do. There's a reason consultancy firms are so massive. They provide brilliant value. No matter how much your average middle manager can't understand that.

In fairness, he didn't say who the consultants provide that brilliant value for...
