It's hard to feel for guys who won 3 flags (one with a brownlow) and were an integral part of arguably the best team ever.

Exactly...VFL/AFL is littered with those who didnt play finals let alone win a GF...feel sorry for Presti last weekend, but these guys?!

Yeah, facing a rebuild hurts a little bit less knowing that Brown, Power, and Black have those premierships in the bank. Farewelling them will be sad, but not filled with regret.

Cry me a river....never ever forgotten the devastation on late Ron Casey's face the night on the Footy Show when that smug Gordon was on gloating;

Poor Ron Casey.

At least he got to keep his club in the AFL. Let's hope he had a few stern words to say to Greg Miller and Mark Dawson after the event.

and then to endure 3 back to backs...care factor starts at the 'x' and ends at this 'x'.

I quite enjoyed it.

I think the 3 players leaving might do them a favour in the long term. But it will put them in trouble for the next couple of years. If they get the picks right though they will be in a position to be strong in 5 years.

You have to feel for Brown, Black and Power who will now play out their last years in a team that almost certainly wont play finals. Still they had the good times so that's the way it works often.

no, you don't.

Point being that you got the compensation package that got you 3 back to backs...

Is that the same compensation package that North were chasing in '96, except with even more concessions?

and now your on the slide back and the rest of us are supposed to care?

No. Has any Brisbane supporter suggested otherwise?

wow ..these Lions supporters are a pretty defensive lot ..when they have no actual answers to a pretty logical and well thought out post they resort to attacking the OP and his team.

I think these forum things are a bit beyond them. :o

With their past history of trading the Lions are in a fair bit of bother going forward, and with the new franchise opening up down the road it is the worst possible time for them to be bottoming out ...i can see the AFL helping them out yet again ..maybe with another increase in their salary cap ?

Probably bolded statements like that don't help. I suspect it's letting criticisms from Carlton supporters go through to the keeper. That club was a higher percentage of supporters who are bitter at Brisbane for some bizarre reason.

I'm sure the original poster put a bit of thought into his post, but I don't have the best faith in his intentions when the ages of a few players are incorrect.

The man may have a relatively good record at Sydney, but Kinnear Beatson's drafting record whilst at the Lions was abysmal and that is where you're seeing the lack of talent in that age bracket (incidentally, this is the exact reason the recruitment drive of last year took place, the 'crack at the flag' line of thinking whilst shouldn't be discarded has been overplayed IMO - hence why all the players targeted were in that mid-20s age bracket). I won't bother to list the players that were drafted under that regime - it's easily researchable - but it's not pretty. Power and Black are arguably the shining light, but it's pretty slim picking from then on until when he and the Lions went seperate ways at the end of 2005. The record under Craig Brittain and Gubby Allan wasn't much better. Graham Hadley looks like he has a better eye at this early stage.

I think Bonuspoints got some things right. Just guessing but I reckon the back-ending of contracts in the premiership years has never really stopped. Reid's comments recently have echoed that. There's obviously some internal issues also, but the blame lies all over the club from both the admin and football sides of things that have impacted on the club. What's relatively heartening is that despite what looked like a review that might paper over the cracks, some genuine change looks set to come over the club

No they rebuild by getting a ton of draft picks for said players. And they were hardly quality except Brennan (who we got a top 5 pick for) who is getting on and very inconsistent.

And we could be looking at a raft of top picks in the next few years.

The next gen lions is on the way.

hmm that raft of top picks comes at a hefty price when free agency comes into play and people become tired of consolation bonuses and want a flag, players are already jumping to the Pies for the prize and other top four sides.

Carlton would be the most similar club but they are a few years ahead of the lions in the debacle stakes unless they can try and railroad Fev again.
And despite their attitudes at times Carlton do have more draw then a Brisbane club that will be competing for hometown lads now in a non-AFL town.

You can be optimistic with draft picks and unknown commodities at the wheel but there is quite a rocky road up ahead hopefully it's got nicely textured creamy chocolate and lots of crumbly marshmallows.

Point being that you got the compensation package that got you 3 back to backs...Gordon knew it...Ron knew it...Eddie knew it...we all knew it...and now your on the slide back and the rest of us are supposed to care?

You need to let go. Fitzroy were as much victims as we were. We had the AFL telling Miller what to do and he was following their advice while the AFL was behind his back making deals with the Bears and the administrators of Fitzroy.

AFL wanted Fitzroy dead, and spent years killing them. They weren't just happy with their death, they wanted to make sure the Bears feasted on what was left of the carcass.

Taking it out on supporters who have long since moved on achieves nothing.

This is what the first stage of a rebuild looks like.

Out go mid-tier players, in come picks.

It's about establishing a solid core of players for the next few years. Then when the time comes you look at plugging the gaps via trades/free agency.

Rich, Redden, Banfield, Rockliff, Leuenberger, Clark, Cornelius, Bartlett, Harwood, Polkinghorne, Hanley is a decent start. Depending on what compo picks we decide to use this year, we will have up to 6 top 35 picks in this draft, one of which will be Gaff or Heppell, plus 5 other promising types.

We'll be residing in the bottom half of the ladder for a few years in the interim which means more high picks. We'll be ok, in time.

Thank you for describing what the re-building period looks like. The textbook re-build however when other teams have had to do something similar you are quick to lay the boots in.

Half of those players will be nothing better than gop's. Great start to a premiership team there. Nearly all get no/limited attention form opposition taggers because your older players are still better.

**Cough. Cough**......Probably best not to say what a premiership teams should look like..;)

As per usual attempt to deflect on to another football team.

This is about the Brisbane Lions sunshine.

Try again.

No need to try again Sport,..;) the statement has already been made..

No deflection to the topic... fact: Brisbane have 3 more recent premiership teams...than yours!.

Rich roves the ball, kicks for goal but it slides across the face....only to be

picked up by Bradshaw. Surely the angle is too acute!, theres a defender hot

on him but he turns around and screws it straight throught the middle!!

BRADSHAW!! BRISBANE!!!! BRISBANE WIN IT!!!!

*sigh*

still hurts huh? :)
Wow kid, i think you may have missed the point. But while we are trolling thanks for sugar and Hendo :) for Fev lol

Still makes me laugh.

are you serious?

Beatson is credited with finding Daniel Bradshaw (No. 56 in the 1995 national draft), Simon Black (No. 31 in 1997), Jamie Charman (No. 29 in 2000) and Justin Sherman (No. 45 in 2004).
Plus Luke Power in 1997.

He left us years ago. he can't be blamed for where we are now surel?

I'm always serious campbell. You should know that. ;)

There were a few gems in his reign but his strike rate was always exaggerated by our supporters IMO. He plucked a few late gems (I'd add Beau McDonald to your list also), but his record with early draft picks was pretty abysmal. In particular take a look at his drafting between 2001 & 2005 which is the age bracket under question.

You've ignored the rest of my post staying there a multitude of reasons for our poor year. But a lot of the OP's pints were about the state of the list between certain ages. A lot of that has to come down to who was drafted and Beatson was responsible during this time.

Your list is wrong, they've delisted Travis Johnstone too.

Have we?? Not saying that we wont, but pretty sure nothing has happened yet.

Sure do:D

I assume that our supporters do realise that, a recruiter can take a selection to the match committee but thats it. HE does not have the ability to actually pick a player, thats up to others. Did not Kin leave due to this very thing, his frustration at others being picked over who he recommended?

and it would be a very interesting comparision to see over the last 15 years who had the best strike rate as you call it? which coach I mean?, as ultimately they have the final say.

It gets worse yes.

This time next year, Brisbane will be in financial hell with a significant portion of their supporters signing up for Gold Coast memberships after being smashed in the local derby twice in a row. With no upside in the next 5 years, GC on the up and up with a new stadium and big dollar players I feel its the worst time for the club to be mediocre, let alone a bottom 4 side.

I for one am hoping that the pies offer a 3 game Brisbane supporters package with the Bris-Coll, GC-Coll and a Melbourne home game but if not i will be signing up a 3 game GC membership aswell as the usuall interstate membership... Bring on AFL in Queensland! yeeeeww!
