:thumbsu::thumbsu:For the Record Shannon was marginally better than Travis.

Shannon. 19 disposals. 5 marks. 4 tackles. 1 goal. 1 behind. 1 clanger. 89% disposal efficiency.
Travis. 16 disposals. 3 marks. 3 tackles. 2 goals. 1 behind. 2 clangers. 81% disposal efficiency.

Shannon had less game time. Shannon won 5 contested possessions.
Any person who finds cause to criticise Byrnes on the basis of that performance is simply biased beyond belief.
Byrnes was a bloody good player for Geelong and, for a change, so too was Travis Varcoe.

Bobcat.

I pinched this quote and it is logical
Great game Byrnes

Re: Byrnes game

From the naked eye i thought Varcoe had a much better game, i reckon that was Varcoe's best game he has played.

Im also happy with Hawkins he played alright.

Re: Byrnes game

It shows that stats can lie.

I think Travis was a lot more influential on the result then Byrnes.

That being said, Byrnes was fantastic tonight. He just got pipped at the post by a bloke who played his best game for the club.

Re: Byrnes game

Shannon did not have a bad game but I don't think you could say that he was marginally better than Travis last night. Just because Shannon had a few more possessions does not mean he was better.
I thought looking at the game overall Travis had more impact last night with his run and carry and pressure on the defensive side. He also kicked 2 nice goals under pressure and set up play.Travis does not overuse the ball and moves it quickly to players up the ground.
Shannon played a good game but sometimes tries to do to much that puts further pressure on him and others and if he can further eliminate some of the turnovers he will rightly hold his position.:)

Re: Byrnes game

Shannon got 107 supercoach points!!!

Why doesn't he ever handball in the vfl?? he gives it straight away in the afl but in the vfl he ingores everyone and tries to do it all himself

Re: Byrnes game

both guys played OK and why cant we just be happy with that. We are talking about 2 blokes who are not in our top 18. To have fringe players put in a performance like that just shows the depth of talent in our team

Re: Byrnes game

Shannon. 19 disposals. 5 marks. 4 tackles. 1 goal. 1 behind. 0 goal assists 1 clanger. 89% disposal efficiency.
Travis. 16 disposals. 3 marks. 3 tackles. 2 goals. 1 behind. 2 goal assists 2 clangers. 81% disposal efficiency.

Edited for accuracy. :thumbsu:

I agree though. Byrnes was good last night, but Travis trumped him IMO. Here's hoping they can both play like that every week.

Re: Byrnes game

The speed both provided was very much needed

WTF are you using stats from Bob ?
Bob gets a stiffy everytime he mentions Byrnes. He'll soon see the light and realise Byrnes is shithouse. Can't wait until we offload the muppet to those suckers up on the Gold Coast.

Re: Byrnes game

Now, now JUBJUB don't be so hard on our players, bagging battlers like Byrnes incessantly is a tad unfair and not good for team morale. ;) lol j/k

Re: Byrnes game

I'll admit I'm probably the number one bagger of Byrnes, but except from the first quarter, he played a pretty damn good game. :thumbsu:

I rated Varcoes better though, he would have been wrecked from the amount of running he was doing... Deserved that goal he missed for his efforts...

Think your last four words there say all that needs to be said, the double standards applied regarding these two players is unbelievable, as a quick check of the voting thread will confirm.

According to stats, which seem to be the holy grail to many, they had almost identical games and contributed equally, yet according to many Travis was our third best player [ better then Johnson and Ablett apparently ] while Shannon doesn't rate a mention.

And before I get accused of bias myself let me add it was arguably Varcoe's best game in the blue and white hoops last night, really stood up when needed.

Re: Byrnes game

I agree Cattery, it is the best game I have seen Travis play and if he can maintain that sort of intensity then he just may become the star we all hope he can be

Re: Byrnes game

From an outsiders perspective, those stats don't really reflect how i seen it. Varcoe, without looking at stats, seemed to have the better game. I've never really rated him, but he was very good last night.

Re: Byrnes game

Shannon was very good last night and he was close to getting a vote from me (I actually had him in there, but edited it right after posting because i decided Jimmy had a slightly better game).

I don't see any point in mentioning Travis Varcoe in this thread, let alone getting worked up because some dared to give Travis votes.
Totally bizarre.

That's what has always frustrated me about him, there's no doubting his skills but the intensity has always been questionable, if he can continue to combine the two he may indeed live up to the hype, and make me look a poor judge into the bargain which will be just fine by me.

Not gettinng worked up in the least, just pointing out the double standard applied to the two particular players.

As I said in the voting thread, it depends on what your voting criteria are.

For instance, mine are first and foremost, who had the biggest impact on winning the game and secondly, which players exceeded expectations.

On both scores, Varcoe deserved my votes and Byrnes didn't.

Both exceeded expectations I thought and according to the stats [ those damn stats again ] had about the same impact yet one gets lauded [ rightly so ] while the other doesn't rate a mention, just find that a little strange though I don't know why it should surprise me really.

Byrnes didn't exceed my expectations and didn't have as great an impact as many others in winning the match, hence his absence from my votes (and from others, I see).

And one thing you can't measure with stats, is impact.
