Campbell commits to Dockers
August 10, 2007

NEW Zealand-born Adam Campbell has become the 10th player to re-sign for Fremantle this season, after agreeing terms to a new two-year contract.
Campbell, 22, made his debut last season, but has played just four games this season – the highlight being a four-goal effort against the Hawks in round seven.
He joins Daniel Gilmore, Steven Dodd, Byron Schammer, Brett Peake, Aaron Sandilands, Roger Hayden, Heath Black, Marcus Drum and Garrick Ibbotson in re-signing with Fremantle this year.

Glad to see him on board. This must now raise the question - are we going to trade Murphy come seasons end? Starting to look likely.

The only trade we should do is Murphy for a first round draft pick. I prefer Kiwi in our team because he has a greater workrate then Murphy :thumbsu:

Yes that is interesting. Campbell certainly has the work ethic but I still think Murphy is the overall better forward. Whatever the case, I sure hope Campbell's signature comes cheap. I can't see him playing a huge amount of games over the next couple and we need all the dosh we can muster to head off any Pav poachers.

Can someone remind me, is Murphy also out of contract?

Although its rare, just because a player is contracted it doesn't mean that he won't be traded. In fact sometimes its actually easier to negotiate the deal if the player is contracted.

For memory, Modra had just signed a new contract with the Crows before being traded to us.

Im pretty sure you cant trade someone the same year that they signed on. Anyone know if that is true?

I dunno about kiwi. He seems a bit one dimensional, which is no problem if he good at his craft.

Whatever. If giving him 2 years reflects stability in our outlook then it can only be positive.

With Pav, Murph and Campbell as Key position players, how do we make it work? They are worth it, but I can't see how they would all fit into a forward line together. Murph is worth persisting with, in my view.

IMO...Eitehr Murph or Campbell oe even Tarrant need to go to CHB.

This is presuming that Pav will sign on of course?

I like Campbell FF, Pav CHF, Tarrant HFF, Murph CHB, McPharlin FB, Grover BP.

Campbell hits the leads & players in front of him the best in our squad...hopefully he gets his chance next year!

Murphy and Campbell are way too slow and lack the mobility or agility for CHB.

Murphy started last year at CHB but he struggled. Doesn't mean he'll never be a defender, but at this stage he's not capable of playing CHB.

This is what I have heard as well. The thing i don't understand, is how that is different? Surely any contracted or uncontracted player can only be traded if they agree to it?

A player has to sign off on a trade. If they aren't keen they would usually be told that there won't be a spot in the 22 for them next season so if they want to have a long career they should move on, and usually do.

The rule for trading players in the same year as they re-sign came into effect when Essendon were really strong and had salary cap troubles 5 or 6 years ago. They convinced Heffernan (or was it Blumfield) to remain loyal and re-sign when he could have got paid much more elsewhere. Then trade week rolled round and they shipped him off. The AFLPA weren't happy so now a player can't be traded after re-signing unless there are extraordinary circumstances.

I think that's fair enough, clubs can't expect players to remain loyal when it suits them then sell them to the highest bidder a couple of months later.

Thanks dom, but it still reads like there is really no difference, it is more politics. Either way a player has to agree to the transfer and sign off on it, and as for what exceptional circumstances may entail is always debatable.

From what I understand, even back then Heffernan could not have been shipped off to Brisbane without him agreeing. He may have been pressured to agree, but he'd still need to say yes.

You're right, I guess it's more of a gentlemans agreement that both parties are committed for the next year. If a club re-signs a player they are basically saying that the players name won't be thrown around at trade time.

Medhurst wasn't keen to go to collingwood, and back in 2001 he told Victorian clubs that he'd stay in the WAFL if he was drafted and was investigated for draft tampering. I guess Fremantle told him last year that he's out of contract in 12 months time, if he wants to be an AFL footballer beyond 2007 he will have to move because there won't be a spot for him with us chasing Tarrant.
