Pressure from the missus to return home also, yes.
perhaps he found a mistress in Perth - like the multiple he’s had in Melbourne.

He would have had offers from other clubs, I know Carlton were sniffing around.
Because they have mostly ignored the draft?
All players are drafted at some stage. Where Patton, Scully and O'Meara went in the draft 10 years ago has zero relevance now.
From the 2017 draft Hawthorn may have the best midfielder in Worpel and if he isn't the best he is probably the most advanced. (Kelly's circumstances considered as he is now back in Perth). From the 2016 not sure what quality mid Hawthorn missed out on there. First pick would have been around 13.Yes the present. What about the future?
O'Meara helps you be competitive right now, but Hawthorn could have started to buid a midfield for 10 years with those picks.
I can't see how any Hawthorn person would happily do that deal again.
who says that they are 'invariably' better? Has anyone said those words and been serious?if does in the context of claims that early draft picks are invariably better than later ones

Well I doubt Hawthorn would have only went for midfielders with those picks, that was just an example, but their were plenty of good midfielders available with those picks. From the 2017 draft Hawthorn may have the best midfielder in Worpel and if he isn't the best he is probably the most advanced. So Hawthorn have O'Meara and Worpel and missed who?
No one's arguing you didn't bring players in.It's still getting a player who was drafted at some stage, just through a different process.

But they ignored the draft.
That's literally what the thread is about.

Parfitt or Fisher with that first pick in 2016
Hunter Clark in 2017
Charlie Constable with the 2nd rounder in 2017
Those guys along with Worpel would be pretty exciting.
There were also plenty of quality key position players they could have taken too.
Well AFL rules make it impossible to totally ignore the draft so if you want to get technical you are correct. They didn't ignore the draft. Since 2010 half the new players in the best 22 came from development of draftees. Its one extreme of the AFL but its not unique, all clubs do it
Good young players you list with up sides but I doubt any will be superstars (happy to be wrong).Well I doubt Hawthorn would have only went for midfielders with those picks, that was just an example, but their were plenty of good midfielders available with those picks.

Really? Seems pretty straight laced father of 3 to me.perhaps he found a mistress in Perth - like the multiple he’s had in Melbourne.
Well O'Meara isn't exactly a superstar himself. I'll be surprised if at least one of those guys don't go onto have a career as good as his.Good young players you list with up sides but I doubt any will be superstars (happy to be wrong).
The O,Meara deal looks bad when you look at numbers in a trade room, but the reality is, Hawthorn are ahead and I expect will be for at least the next 5 years.
Yes, really unfortunately I am led to believe.Really? Seems pretty straight laced father of 3 to me.
How is this relevant sorry? Some interesting Data

I think I counted 4 in the current 22 were drafted by the club since 20142015 onwards, No premiership players have been drafted
in 2014, current 22-28 players already there - Frawley McEvoy Gunston Burgoyne Ceglar (5) as trades and Sicily Obrien Puopolo Smith Stratton Shiels Bruest (7)
Since and includng 2015 draft/trade period:
Mitchell Omeara Impey Wingard Scrimshaw Patton Scully Frost Henderson (9) as trades and Hardwick Worpel Morrison Lewis Cousins Nash Hanrahan (7)
(with Jones Day Morris Jiath the next most likely)
Im not trying to prove figures exactly listing 28 its a matter of opinion on the fringe of the 22. draftees usually serve a couple of years first so its not like for like
YesHawthorn are ahead of what?
Ahead in that trade?
Will have to agree to disagree on that one.
