IMO Watts will go #1

Forwards and Midfielders win you premierships in the modern game

Melbourne will snare a ruckman in the trade period or PSD

Watts is an ideal replacement for Neitz

The crows will not draft a running HB with their first selection, we have players coming through that are capable of playing that role, we also drafted Armstrong last year who is marked for that particular role in the future

we will target a forward or midfielder

I thought defences still won flags.

Wouldn't surprise me to see the Dees take Rich.

Naitanui is still a risk, and with the lockout coming up the Dees need to make every post a winner. They may well look at a ruck with the PP, or if they have secured Warnock via PSD/trade, then they may look at the best mid available - Rich. If they get Warnock via PSD then they can take a forward or two in the late teens.

Just a thought.:thumbsu:

Any chance we can strike a deal with the Dons to let Watts fall to 6.:D

Visy will sponsor anyone in the top 5 who lets him go.:thumbsu:;)

As I said, everyone else has done that in their phantom drafts, I wanted to take a different approach.

if anyone wants a "big flop" for the draft, trust me as i know johnston very well, ie growing up, there is ur flop, no way in top 20 and wldnt think in top draft maybe the rookie, WILL FLOP

We need a quick midfielder/HFF who is a clearance player and a great kick more than we need a key defender.

However, I would pick Hurley more for our forwardline than our backline and to give us more versatility and weapons.

if you drafted hurley you wouldnt use him forward, he would be a KPD and you would put waite forward.

why do you need another midfeilder? gibbs, murphy, judd, stevens etc
if thats how the draft panned out hurley would be by a fair stretch the best available player. you would be stupid to pick anyone else over him.

No we wouldn't, Jack Ziebell is just as good as Michael Hurley, if not better.

I agree if we did take Hurley, he'd probably be used down back.

You can't have enough quality midfielders. We might have a core group of quality midfielders but the depth, especially players who dispose of the ball well isn't there.

I see your point, but surely Carlton would be looking to enhance their defence. In terms of key defenders, you are pretty thin in terms of ability from my perspective.

You state that the club is looking for depth and already have a core group of quality mids. If that is the case, wouldn't you look to add depth through the second and third rounds, and then use your first pick (providing there is a suitable candidate) to improve an area of true deficiency?

Our defence is young, not deficient. Bower, Austin and Jamison all very capable, and played less than 50 senior games combined. Throw in Waite, Thornton, Setanta.

I see bigger needs for us.
Key forward - Watts will never fall......interested in speculation Hurley could go forward..
Skilled mids. Stevens will be on the tail end of his career when we are ready to challenge for a flag (4-5 yrs away), Judd will be about 30. We need more skills in the middle to replace a swag of guys that burn it when they get it.

Wouldn't be unhappy with Hartlett, Ziebell or Hurley by the sounds of them.

Deficient was a harsh word I'll agree, but they certainly aren't world beaters.

In any case, if you were to draft Hurley, would you not put him in defence and shift Waite to the forward line? That would alleviate your Key forward concern, at least somewhat.

I agree with your final assessment, any three of those players would assist Carlton's development.

Rich and Hill ? Two midfielders with our first two picks. I'm not so sure that that will happen. Unless Kerr leaves, and if he does that SHOULD get the Eagles another first round pick (higher than 10, more likely top 6). ONE midfielder is likely if Kerr stays, and another player in a position that needs filling perhaps (small forward, small defender, ruck) with the Eagles first two picks sems more likely to me.

As BB stated, our defense isn't really a major issue. If we can allow the ball not to get down there as often we'll be fine. Jamo is a quality defender whether people see it or not. Bower is capable of doing a good job on talls as he has shown this year. Austin he been one of the best for the Ants this year and is still only 19. Then we have Setanta to play on the gorillas so the speak. Also Thornton and even Waite would be back there to help as the second man up.

We need to pick best available, needs should really come into it to much. Even taking need into account, Hurley is arguably still not the best pick, Ziebell and Hartlett would help just as much IMO. If we were to to bring needs into it, our issues are another target in the forward 50, HFF with quality footskills, tough hard player with great skills and a quality clearance player. Which name do you put to that?

To me Ziebell, if available will be best available at our pick and would suit our needs very well, just as well as Hurley.

It really depends on what order you have to top 6 in with regards to best available. If you have Ziebell and Hartlett ahead of Hurley then either one should be picked before Hurley. If Hurley is your best available out of the three, that should be your reason to take him at our pick, not because he arguably suits our needs.

I'm just trying to point out that it isn't clear cut Hurley will suit our needs the best which is what more people think. Either on of the three players would help our team and the reason you would pick either one would be because you believe that one is best available.

No.......but Bower did a great job on Buddy, and before his shoulder injury I thought was one of the most improved backmen in the comp.
Jammo (still a rookie) put both Medhurst and Bradshaw to shame when both were in great form. Austin still very young and raw.

In any case, if you were to draft Hurley, would you not put him in defence and shift Waite to the forward line? That would alleviate your Key forward concern, at least somewhat.
TBH I don't know enough about Hurley to say. I have read that he is capable as a forward. Many good forwards began life as defenders.
Waite has great value for us, and will pinch hit in a number of roles, but ultimately, I'd actually like to see him play a "Richo" type role......wing......floating.......link man.

Love reading these so I would like to say thanks.

Well done for thinking outside the square but Port will take Watts ahead of Vickery.

Well done.

Suban to Crows sounds good now that we have lost Johncock :)

What's happened to "Stiffy", mate? Is he being traded, delisted or what?

Petrenko and Armstrong will take over from Mcleod and Johncock we don't need Suban we either need a forward or a solid in and under midfielder one with some aggresion to get under the packs and dish it out!
