Sydney: The big crowd specialists.

- Biggest TV audience in Aust sport. 1996 GF.

Non vic crowd;

How is anyone supposed to beat that? Seriously, no Victorian team can except for Sydney, you guys have Stadium Australia. Stupid point.

Biggest TV audience in Aust sport. 1996 GF.

That wouldn't have anything to do with being a one team state, would it? Bandwagoners.

Top 2 largest crowds in Vic for interstate team

Hawks game: Only because it was Hawthorn's last ever game at Waverly.

Essendon games: I'm pretty sure one of them was a final, because I've looked through the stats can I can't find one of them in any if the highest crowds for H & A games in the last 15 years. Essendon would draw that much in finals against any team.

The 1996 one, granted. Was a big year for the Swans. But, again, look at the stats for the each year and realise who are the real 'big crowd specialists'.

However, I did find Sydney a common name in the top 10 worst attendances each season.

Big crowd specialists, my arse. If I was to put all the times Collingood (or Essendon for that matter), had drawn more than 60,000, it would fill up the whole page.

Stop dreaming grayham.

69K v Ess was R21-1996, and 63K v Ess was R11-1998, both were at the MCG.

LOL. Yeah sorry, my bad. It wasn't in the top 10 attendances for 1998. I thought he was calling Sydney a 'big crowd specialist', yet those figure are from over 5 years ago. You can't be a specialist unless you do the same thing consistently.

Redundant issue.

Why would a football fan give a rat's ass about how many people attend a game? That's for the money grubbing AFL board to be all concerned about. What is the net benefit to the Sydney Swans going into the finals because they drew a large crowd in 1996?

For the record, who won those games?

Good point. But, I find it funny how grayham thinks Sydney is a "big crowd specialist". It is laughable.

Simply because we dont rely on the other teams supporters to generate a crowd. And when we travel, we bring them out in droves.
All games in my sig are H&A.

How can anyone beat the 54K at Stadium Australia? Simple. Come up here and try. Collingwood is about to have a crack.

96 GF had over 1 million more viewers greater than the next biggest grand final audience. Which just happen to be the Brisbane ones. Just shows how important Syd and Bris are.

Hmmm...Nth Melb, Essendon & Collingwood had nothing to do with the GF TV ratings in 96, 2001-02?

And BTW...the highest rating H & A game EVER, was Nth Melb Vs Adelaide in Round 6 this year.

Throw in the Nth Vs Richmond game (McCartney's farewell game) and you'll find number 2 in the H & A TV ratings rankings.

Plus another sell out in Adelaid this week (booked out 2 weeks in advance) and yep - you guessed it - a game featuring Nth Nelb.

Not for a second am I suggesting that Nth Melbourne have an abundance of supporters around the country, simply using these stats to reinforce how lame and innacurate Grayham's claims to fame are.

BTW...when was the Swan's last flag? That's my measurement for success.

B A N D W A G O N

First thing that comes to mind when I think of Sydney... You don't go to the football to support your club in Sydney.... you go to "be seen at the footy"

What I'm saying is, no other interstate team can break that record because their respective home grounds do not hold that many people. It cannot be broken by an other interstate team at this point in time.

The 1996 GF also had a hell of alot of people that wouldn't otherwise be interested watching grayham, and you know it.

Crows sellout AAMI probably every 2nd or so home game anyway....the capacity is simply not big enough. I've not got to games this year because they have been sold out when i have found out i could go....also the Rd22 Showdown Port vs Crows and the Eagles vs Dockers would probably generate more than Sydney vs Coll if their stadiums would allow it.....so whats the point of th sig.......Sydney has a bigger ground....if you are such big crowd specialist, why don't u get massive crowds every week?

Well Sydney is the biggest city in Australia and only has one team representing it. What the population of Sydney? Isn't it around 4 million?

I think in reality the Swans would be disappointed that they can't yet average over 50 000 to their home games, particluarly in winning years.

I realise it is a developing market but they surely could not be happy with their crowds. Their aim would be for a lot more.

You have to live there to know what its like.... Sydney people generally is not a sporting city... unlike Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne which are cities that love their sport... and you know when there is something big going on.... they have lots of open parks and sporting grounds.......... in Sydney you would barely even know if there is anything going on... and Sport is not a way of life there....... people are more concerned with just walking the streets without being shot or carjacked.

It is hardly my problem if SA and WA cant build bigger stadiums, and its completely unfounded speculation as to whether they could match Sydney's figures in non-derby matches.
Stick to the facts.

The 1996 GF also had a hell of alot of people that wouldn't otherwise be interested watching grayham, and you know it.
All of whom were brought in by Sydney, and will all be back next time Sydney make it. Channel 10 doesnt care who they are, as long as they watch.....and they will.
It really is phenominal how massive the 96 GF was compared to all the others. All teams have a wish to play Sydney in a GF. Pity the next ones to do so will loose onfield, but win off field.

So, why have it in your sig then? Your claim to fame is something others in a similar situation (ie. interstate side) cannot reach. The FACT is, the other states do not have such a large stadium, you can deny it as much as you want grayham, but it is fact. I'm sticking to the facts, are you?

What is the point in making a claim to fame in regards to supporters that don't go to the football, week in, week out? grayham, you had a alot of people watching that didn't know the rules, they didn't really care who won, and were only watching it because Sydney was involved. Nothing special. You are in a ONE TEAM state.

Why do supporters who go to games more important than someone who watches on TV ? TV revenue is far greater than ticket sales revenue.
You are right though, they watched it because Sydney was involved. We bring an extra million to a GF. Fact. Sponsors love it.

We are not a ONE TEAM state. We are an 11 team state, its just that we never have derbies with the other 10 because they play a different code.

We are talking about the Grand Final. Being in a grand final means that Sydney will have people watching that would not normally watch.

What I love about Sydney fans is the dedication and loyalty of such fans as Steve Liebman, assorted home and away bimbos, Bob Carr and Anne Fulwood, Theyll stick through thick and thin.

P.S Olympic Opening Ceremony
Cathys Run
World Swimming Champs
World Cup Finals, both soccer and cricket

All of these were higher raters ahead of 1996 GF

Nice Try Gayham

No, we are talking about crowds and a grand final (ie my sig), and according to you most of the Sydney audience for the 96 GF wouldnt know a thing about the sport, so how come they knew the difference between it and the two NRL prelims on the same weekend?

You pull good numbers, we pull the really big numbers. Thats it.

ahhh yes... because of course... if Sydney didn't have the olympics in 2000... the Swans would have built a 90,000 seat stadium just to cater for the bulging at the seams crowds the Sydney Swans get. Not. They can't even sell out the SCG every week. Sydney people are just bandwagoners... If they get 60,000 to Bribery Stadium it will only be because 30,000 of them have been given either free tickets.... $10 tickets or its a "special event" that Sydney people tend to go to once every year or so... just so they can be seen there.
