Carey has just stated on Footy Confidential that Dale Thomas is Collingwood's Best and most important player atm.

Agree.......Disagree?

Discuss.

As a small forward I still rate Didak better but Thomas should prove to be the more versatile player. Definetely has it over Didak in the marking department. Didak has the edge with disposal and vision.
If Pendlebury can keep progressing at his current rate he may not be better than Thomas but will definetely be more important given his role in the team.
So many variables.

I saw it, but it depends what he meant by most important. For our future, and considering the whole package (i.e. off field image, marketing etc.) he IS the most important player. I'm not sure about best. He will be a very good midfielder (I don't see him as a stay at home forward all his career).

He isn't playing 4 solid quarters yet, which is understandable considering his size and age.

Fraser is a lot more important to us at the moment as far as players go.

Yep, I saw it, they are huge wraps especially on a second year player. I agree he isnt playing 4 solid quarters yet, however he has really been impressive over the last 3 weeks and is that spark and X-factor that is required to turn a game or lift the team. Will become the best and most important player in the future however currently on importance Fraser is ahead.

I saw it, and I think it's great that he rates Thomas so much.

From memory he said something like "Dale Thomas is the best player at Collingwood right now/at the moment".

Now if you take that as referring to current form only, then he has a point. Thomas has been decisive in two of our last three matches. But if he's claiming anything more than that, then it's clearly a load of old cobblers because Thomas ain't even our best second-year player, let alone our best player full-stop.

He is not solid over the length of a game week in and week out. Thats ok this is only his 2nd season. Wait untill he has had 2-3 pre seasons in his guts then he will unleash. He needs to put on more size too. another 3-5kg of muscle mass would set him in good stead.

For pure importance to the team at the moment I wouldn't think he ranked in the top 10 . But moving forward as the complete package he may well be right .

yep, thomas showed what he can do in the first and last qrts, in a few years thomas will become hird like

Thomas is a gun and will be a star as like many of our younger players.. but when it comes to our on field most important player.. you probably couldnt look past the big fella... when rocca kicks 5 or 6 and takes 7 or 8 contested marks inside 50... collingwood will not lose.. yes it doesnt happen every week but that shows us that he is the barometer of our great team

jeez.

i reckon the sleazebag is a lot closer to the truth than most of the comments in this thread regarding thomas' importance. you sure you've been watching this year's games ?

I would rather see the name Thomas in the 'outs' column before the likes of Rocca , Cloke , Fraser , Clement , Presti , Burns , Swan , H Shaw , Didak or even O'Bree . You could even make an argument for Pendles , Lockyer , and Harry as well regarding their importance to us at the moment .

If Thomas produces football the quality of his first and last quarter through the whole game then , as I said , he has every chance of being the most important player at Collingwood .

I think Thomas's spark is vital to the team. The way he backs himself and plays on, has that ability to turn a match off his boot, his defensive pressure which is probably second to none, his 1%ers... when he lifts, the team lifts.

In saying that, I think Rocca, Cloke, Heath shaw and Fraser are more important players. At the start of the year I would have definately said Presti, Clement and a few others, but we have a new found backline depth. What Thomas brings to the team, we can't replace IMO.

I agree , he is an important part of the machine but at the moment he is still somewhat of a flashy forward . Given time and experience he will become a better , consistent , more rounded player but just at the moment I would still have those I listed before Dale . If I had to !

That was a big thing for Carey to say.
Even though Daisy is a very important player and has played a big role in the past few wins for the pies, i don't think you can say he is the best and most important player just yet but certainly in the future i think he will be.

I love Dale but Carey's comments come from someone who has either not been paying enough attention to how the pies have performed this year or the classic media commentator trying to get on a bandwagon filling quickly and heading for the road.

Is Dale Thomas in the top 100 players in the AFL? Not likely.

Yet he is still the best player at Collingwood?

For a guy who was contracted to the Magpies in a coaching role Wayne Carey seems to have little knowledge of the team. He picked us for wooden spoon.....and now he says Dale Thomas is the best player at Collingwood.

Does Wayne still think Chris Judd is no longer the equal of Daniel Kerr like he was saying earlier in the season?

Should the kangaroos still replace Dean Laidley as coach with John Longmire?

Wayne Carey is a headline seeking windbag.

I agree with Jimmy35 and his statements on here.......there are at least 7 or 8 players clearly more importnant and better (Fraser, Didak, Cloke, Rocca, Shaw, Swan etc)......in fact, I think Daisy is at about the same importance as Leon Davis. Potential match winner....but a quiet day from them will not hurt us too badly.

And on another matter from On the Couch last night..........when was the last time Robert Walls picked Collingwood to win? He either doesn't believe his eyes when he see's us or he just simply hates us so much his selection is more hope than educated.

Pebbles is our most important player and has been for a few years. We cannot win the comp without him.

What is the toughest task in footy? Contested mark in forward 50. Pebs led the league in contested marks before he got suspended, most in the F50.

Love Thomas though and people should apologise to those, that said he was Hird-like or Daicosesque when drafted.

Will play plenty in the midfield and then rest up forward and win matches for us or play up forward and rotate through the middle still winning matches for us. Just has that uncanny goal sense.

Thomas is a match winner, plain and simple. He steps up on the big occasion and for us to do well in finals this year it's gonna take blokes like him dids, Fraser and Rocca to win it for us.

Buckley,Clement and Rocca still our 3 best players.
Then you have Heath,Josh,Burns,O'Bree,Didak , Presti and Cloke.
Thomas is very effective and is quite often brilliant, but he's great cream rather than a pillar of the team like the other 10 or 11 I named , same with Pendles.
Neither are our best players , but it makes a noticeable difference to the team when they are able to exhibit there undoubted class and effectiveness around these players. Eventually Thomas and Pendles will move in to the second group and most probably continue on to the first couple I named ,with Travis and Heath.
