List Mgmt. Carlton Draft 2021

This sounds like a Test batsman...

And if you were to compare the philosophies of AFL list management to any form of cricket, it'd be Test cricket. You're playing a game that takes years to pay off.

More than happy to have a list manager who plays a straight bat more often than not, only pulls out the big shots when the right ball presents, and doesn't try pulling off a reverse sweep in the first over.
Reckon the STK list manager played t20 a couple of seasons ago…

Who would you have taken Wick?

I would have retained Ben Silvagni for another year. We drafted him knowing he'd be a slow burn and cut him.

I was fully on board with, I believe Arr0w, who said Aliir Aliir would be a high quality cheaper option (similarly he called Chol months before he moved elsewhere).

I was on board for getting Brander as well as Young this year.

There have been quite a few options available even when the draft's KPD ranks have been lower.

I don’t disagree that we’re thin at KP. But it’s been exacerbated by Charlies injury, McDonalds injury (who looked ok before it) and Jones not believing in science. Not sure I’m going to blame Austin for that.

Curnow was injured before Austin came on board. Surely there's opportunity to contingency plan around the possibility that he doesn't come all the way back.

Jones I agree on.l, obviously

I'm just looking back at who we lost and who we gain.
Jones was an unfortunate loss and late as well
But, all the other players would struggle to be best 22 in 2022.
Whereas, you can argue that we have 3 definite best 22 with the three traded players and Motlop should be best 22 by the end of 2022.

So by any definition - you'd have to agree that we had a great trading and drafting period this offseason :D

Lost players - Gained players
  • Marc Murphy - Cerra
  • Eddie Betts - Motlop
  • Levi Casboult - Young
  • Sam Petrevski-Seton - Hewett
  • Michael Gibbons - Akuei
  • Sam Ramsay
  • Liam Jones

Technically we gained Boyd and Mirkov since they came in to replace injured players but remain on the list for next season. Then whoever replaces Jones will be the final selection meaning we gain one player overall due to a 2nd Cat B selection.

I guess so. We probably could have done with another developing KP. Not sure we’d better off than we are now with Young though.

Marchy was a killer. I dontthink he’s a straight up KP but if he’d stayed fit I suspect we’d be way more comfortable with losing Jones

Reminds me of a party I was at once where this guy bored me for an hour or so about how he'd went to school with Dustin Fletcher and how they were such great mates...........problem was he called him 'Justin Fletcher' the whole time !!

Great story, Randy!

I ain't comfortable at all with our lack of spine players, even if every 3rd tall was fit and firing

Cripps could play on a wing, would still get the pill, but wouldn't be effective as Cerra

Fisher could play in the middle, but wouldn't be as effective as Hewett

Really isn't hard to find a 21-24 year old B grade spine player, nor is it difficult to draft a young KPP to develop for the future

We should make finals next year, but we will never be a contender until we address the imbalance

Reckon ol mate Gil gave his mate Lethlean and Gubby the instruction to get this team winning immediately to get StKilda bums back on seats.

The AFL forwarded them a record $ allotment the year that they went helter skelter at the draft. They were bleeding money. Gubby, Lethers and Ratts are short term specialists and did the required job but Covid made the plan worthless as no bums were on seats.

Now their list is an absolute mess.

Ahh, my handwriting looks like chicken scratch.

Easy mistake to make.

Welcome, Justin Motlop.
In the latter years of her life, my Tiger supporting mother-in-law was adamant that Daniel Rioli's name was Damian Rioli. Both my wife & I tried to set her straight without success.

When she was watching Richmond play we would hear over & over again "Go Damian, Go Damian".

Can't think of a team with a worse list in the AFL than the Sainters, I feel for Ratts who is likely going to get fired after another season or two of bottom 6 finishes.

They squandered their first round pick this year on a high risk, high reward player (which is something you should never do with a first round selection imo), plus their young player development in the last 10 years has arguably been worse than ours.

Do I feel sorry for them ? Nah, quite the opposite in fact.
I will enjoy seeing them as cellar dwellers where they rightfully belong, for the next decade :D

Next year’s draft is supposedly filled with talented KPPs - we’ll need to use our first rounder next draft so I presume we’ll go for a KPP if in the right spot

Our last batch of KPPs enter their 7th season next year, so we definitely need to be planning for the future. We should have already but we've wasted some opportunities to trade players with better currency and draft the right types. It's a tough balancing act though.

That’s what happens when you sell the farm for average or often injured footballers. Unfortunately Ratts had a hand in that

Hannebery is one of the most baffling and expensive mistakes of modern times, whilst Hill and Crouch are just average players who have had a good season or 2

Absolutely agree with Wick that key position is our biggest weakness, has been for 12 months. Think Austin has been pretty good aside from that

Replace Jones in the SSP. If someone goes on the LTI I think we can replace them mid season? If so, go for another KPP. Then use at least one pick on a tall next year, probably 2, whilst looking for a forward version of Young in the trade period

Then buckle up baby 'cos we will be a comin'

So when can we expect to see who we have invited to fill Jones spot?

I suspect we will have at least a couple of guys training with us, and not necessarily all KPDs either. I'm not sure the club sees the issue the same way we do.
