From what i've read, if you had to put your house on one of these players becoming a star you'd put it on Walsh. However if there was a guarantee all players will fulfill their potential then there would be a few ahead of him.

For all the discussion and debate I will be very happy getting Sam Walsh tonight. For all the talk about talent, X factor etc he will be a player that gets the job done week in week out. May not be flashy but is all class and almost the perfect modern day midfielder.

His ability to do nearly everything right is why we need him. He’s not the exciting pick but he is the best one

Sam Walsh , Jack Lukosius and Izak Rankine will be modern champions of the game they’ve the preresiquites.
All unique talents and shouldn’t be compared, if one wants a popular future Leader, professional , mature attitude and a very good footballer then Samuel Walsh is your man he’ll become a great club man for whomever drafts him, an outstanding young lad.
Welcome Samual Walsh I’m certain you’ll make us proud.

You should pick Lukakuis or Rankine .Walsh will be at the Murphy, Gibbs level whilst Lukakis could be the next Riewoldt or Josh Kennedy. Rankine could be like Gary Ablett senior.Another option would be to trade pick 1 ,for pick 3 and pick 22.The draft calculator says thats about right https://www.draftguru.com.au/pick-value-calculator#3,22| .Then you are guaranteed a gun and another long term player.
Who made you a draft expert ?

I don't know about that but my view will be unpopular, which is that I just dont see it with him. Over rated to excess is my feeling.

And all this Walsh is a safe bet middle of the road plodder talk is fair dinkum hilarious. He will be an out and out star doing the thing that you build your spine around. Feeding that spine all day long for season after season into the distant future.

Love it - can't wait to get Sam 'The Spine Feeder" Walsh and his spine-feeding ass to Carlton!!

Despite ranking players ahead of both, Rankine v Walsh is an interesting one, as they are polar opposites

Given a myriad of factors, but mainly consistency and what other players can benefit or be released, I would select Walsh
I still think Smith is best suited to what we need, but I still wouldn't be unhappy for SOS to take a calculated risk and snaffle Rankine. IMO it's time to snaffle a match-winner.

I think we have to put some faith into Russell assisting in wringing some improvement out of Cuningham & Fasolo psychologically, and along with our coaching staff, accelerating the natural improvement of players such as Dow, O'Brien, SPS, Williamson, Macreadie, Setterfield & maybe Polson. Fisher is a self-starter so I'm not concerned about him.

People are still putting Pickett into their best 22. He's a long way off for mine. If he has come back overweight again, he has 1 season to prove himself or I'd set him loose if it were up to me.

Hate it when players waste their talent, especially when we are united in setting standards.
Agree totally he either gets it together this year or dream is over, and what a waste if you watch his highlights he is just as talented as Rankine with his evasive skills etc, went at no 4 for that reason, just don’t understand it, why waste your opportunity. This is the other reason we needed to keep Betts to get these young indigenous kids into the right mind set like Eddie had. Betts made it through hard work week in week out not just on talent. Frustrating

And if we are putting that faith in Russell, surely the likes of Pickett, Garlett, Lebois have the freakish nature we yearn.

You already know I prefer players with a point of difference, but some level of consistency/commitment/team ethos needs to be attached

Dennis Armfield was a great clubman also.

Dennis Armfield was a great clubman also.

Probably one of the reasons he got the most out himself despite his limitations.

It’s always a positive having players who will do anything for their teammates, and are driven by team success and the opportunity to elevate their club, and guys like Selwood and Sloane are good examples of guys who aren’t just talented footballers, they’re loyal and devoted to the cause, which can’t be underestimated.

There’s no use picking a player just on their leadership credentials, but it’s a very handy trait, and one with a trickle-down and energising effect on the team.

Walsh is definitely the safe bet however Rankine gives us something we desperately need, marketability and a badly needed boost in membership.

Everything about us over the last 3 years has been safe, game style, draft choices etc ( besides Charlie boy) maybe it’s time to take a chance and add some real excitement around the club, imagine the excitement around a Rd 1 debut for Rankine on the MCG in front of 90,000 and then just imagine if he comes out and kicks 4-5 goals and lights up the MCG with Charlie, Harry and the Governor and we beat the Tigers, or even if we lose the excitement around Carlton would go through the roof and get our profile back to where it should be.

We can’t discount this part of the equation when making our choice of who to take, yes Walsh is an extra cog in our midfield that is needed but really that’s it, in terms of outside influence other than being taken at no1 he doesn’t add a lot. Where as Rankine adds so much more in terms of outside influence with his brash exciting dangerous style, he is a marketers wet dream especially combined with Charlie. Imagine how many articles and stories will be written about Rankine and Carlton. With the extra attention he will draw to our club I feel it is worth the risk of taking Rankine at pick 1. And honestly I see him as an Akermanis type player in the future with time in midfield as well as forward and a lot of time spent removing his foot from his mouth.
