Just got back from Antartica - not warm down at Cranbourne.

but they didn't and there was a massive 3/4 time brawl. It was a ripper. Birss was screaming at Bakes to finish up, but I think the Bakerdog enjoyed the fight more than anything

Baker - Did well in the fight.

haha gold! :thumbsu:

Hobart Mercury :
It was an all too familiar sight in Melbourne yesterday as the Devils produced both some of their best football and some of their worst before crashing to another disappointing loss to Casey.

After a superb second quarter gave Tasmania a 21-point buffer at the main break at Casey Fields, the Devils simply stopped in the second half, with the Scorpions doing as they pleased to finish with a 20.17 (137) to 15.7 (97) win.

When Rowan Andrews kicked a goal less than two minutes into the third quarter against a three- or four-goal breeze, the Devils had opened up a 27-point lead and a huge upset was on the cards.

But led by their AFL St Kilda-listed stars, Casey piled on the next nine of the term and 14 goals to five after half-time to overrun the Devils.

Ruckman Michael Gardiner and classy rover Adam Schneider -- who played in AFL premierships for West Coast in 2006 and Sydney in 2005 -- caused mayhem in the middle of the ground in the second half.

Casey's 52 hit-outs to the Devils' 16 told the story of the ruck domination, while the Scorpions had 22 centre clearances to five for the match, completely smashing the Devils at the stoppages in the second half.

Shane Birss bobbed up with three second-half goals, Jarryn Geary ran all day and fellow Saints talls Michael Rix, Charlie Gardiner and Ben McEvoy dominated the air.

After pressuring their opponents and following instructions to kick long in the first half, the Devils' intensity fell away when they returned from the break and were unable to stop the rot once it started.

About the only passion the players showed in the third quarter came after the siren, when an all-in melee broke out as the frustration spilled over.

Scorpions lift in second half

BY PAUL AMY

GREG Hutchison took a swig on his bottle of water, left the coaches box and marched to the changerooms.

It was half-time of Saturday's Round 14 VFL match against Tasmania.
The Casey Scorpions were trailing. And Hutchison, their coach, was steaming.

He'd just seen them be outscored seven goals to one in the second quarter and he had the look of a man who would struggle to keep his emotions under control once he reached the privacy of the rooms.

Presumably, he gave his crew a decent old spray. By three quarter time, the match had changed and so had the coach's demeanour, words of commendation replacing condemnation. The Scorpions came out and produced a nine-goal term, turning a 20-point deficit into a 33-point lead.

They kicked another five goals into the wind in the last quarter to win by 40 points and all but lock up a top-four finish. The move of Michael Rix from centre half back to full forward yielded two goals for the big fellow in the third term.

In the same period Shane Birss drifted forward to kick three and the ever-improving Chris Dunne slipped in with two on his way to a four-goal haul. He is a sharp improver.

Rix was also front and centre in a melee at three quarter time. The VFL will probably pop both clubs with a fine. Players pushed, shoved and wrestled, and there were some wild punches thrown. All this as spectators came on to the ground.

It was as ugly as Casey's second quarter. Raph Clarke had a terrible time of it, to the extent that there was a chorus of concern from Scorpions supporters every time he went near the ball.

First he kicked out on full. Tasmania drilled a goal from the free. A short time later a Clarke kick was smothered and Tassie kicked a goal again. And then he dropped a soda of a mark, letting the Devils in for a third goal. Thankfully, he played with more surety in the second half.

The Scorpions were again without injured pair Alex Silvagni and Evan Panozza, but inclusions from the St Kilda end ensured they sent out their strongest team this season.

In the first quarter there was a centre-square combination of Michael Gardiner, Adam Schneider, Leigh Fisher and Birss. Steve Baker was in defence and Adam Fiora cruising around the wing and half forward.

Fiora wound up with 26 possessions, but he was a fair way behind Jarryn Geary. The young right-footer had 24 kicks and 14 handballs, a 40-disposal day garnished with five tackles and two goals.

Birss had 37 possessions and laid 10 tackles, and Dunne had 26 touches and took 15 marks.

The Devils were brave and did not deserve the vulgar language directed their way from a handful of beer-swilling ferals on the balcony of the social club.

This is the 3rd time this year Fiora has been listed as Adam. Adam certainly seems to get more of it than Aaron. Wakelin complex?

How bad are Casey going to be next year with half the team made up of Melbourne reserves. I think as a parting gesture we should let them keep:
Rixy, Fiora, Fisher, Raph and Ferguson.

If we delisted those guys, would they automatically just play for Casey, or would they have to sign up for the VFL?

Just want to ask a question

Can a player play for St.Kilda friday night then play for Casey that Sunday??

thanks

I do not think there is any rule preventing this from happening. But no club would do this. Why would you? If you played for St.kilda on a Friday night, you would be buggered. AFL footy is tough, and players need the required time to recover for next week.

If they did that the player would be nowhere near peak condition for the Casey game.

0% chance basically.

It's been known for people to play a half in the VFL so that they could be emergency the following day for the AFL. I assume someone out of that has actually been called in to play.

Here's an old story too:

At Colonial:
St. Kilda 4.3 8.6 12.8 16.8.104
Carlton 7.2 9.4 14.11 22.16.148

Another St. Kilda performance that was cheeky, threatened victory but
just wasn't enough. Carlton will be eyeing a top-four spot after
Hawthorn's loss but they had a couple of worries too, with Matty Allan
injured again and Scotty Camporeale reported for tripping. Just one
change in selection for the Saints, Matthew Young replacing Chris
Oliver. Initially Robert Powell was supposed to replace Oliver, but
Powell went down with gastro and Young was called up after playing in the VFL the previous day.

The Blues recalled forward Brendan Fevola for his first game since round 13, where he injured an ankle, plus rover
Darren Hulme. Adam Pickering and Ben Nelson were dropped.

Do we read that given four named on the bench (McGrath O'Bryan McDonald Mercoulia) are also named in the ressies that the 3 Saints boys are playing?

Or are we playing another stand alone team which cuts us back to 12?

Chivers will at least get a run at it in the reserves to see if he is worth re-rookieing. Haretuku looks like he could potentially develop (has the right size and is a reasonable kick) with time.

Thought Thompson might be a handful.

Good to see the Flea (Jack) get into the best, noting Ross's comment that he could see game time with the Saints this year (amazing comment for mine).

Gardi might now be ready. Question mark on flight over west. Gears & Birss are over-ripe!

Looks like Gears had the kicking boots on today.

Good future ahead of this kid.

Hmm I didnt think Stevo got picked, good on him. St. Bedes boys represent!

Wonder how Myke Cook's goin with Adelaide...

And anyone know Steve Gaertner's chances of being picked up this year? Or Sam McGarry?

Did Steven Baker play?

Should only be picked for the Saints 22 on current form, rather than reputation. Needs to earn his spot. No cheap places in the current St.kilda team, which is excellent.

Looking at that, Micheal Gardiner is the only likely inclusions for St.kilda. Geary needs time to build muscle and gain some confidence. Will be a good player next year.

Birss derserves to be picked, but it seems he has sinned against Ross Lyon. Did he cheated on his wife?
