Review Cats hang on by 3 points to beat Pies

That incident of Gazza Snr giving Gary Lyon one was in '89 when he was at the height of his powers. It was in the first half of the '89 season when the Cats won a massive 3 games at MCG, all with huge crowds against excellent sides in Essendon, Collingwood and the Demons and Gazza was virtually unstoppable. So against Melbourne, the last of those 3 big games, the Demons decided to stop Gazza's influence during game coz once again he was dominating against Rod Grinter for the Demons but instead of taking Grinter off Gazza they doubled teamed him with Gary Lyon also playing on him along with Rod Grinter (yeah, Gazza was that good!). And Lyon decided to close-check the 'great one' by virtually half grabbing him at contests, so Gazza must of said to himself 'enough is enough' and he gave Garry Lyon one, with Gazza 'the great one' being reported, then owning up at tribunal because his 'faith commanded so' and he got 3 to 4 weeks which at the time he was unstoppable.

When Gazza came back from suspension, he wasn't quite the same player (must have gone fishing with his enforced time off) but he gradually built up his fitness base and 'touch' to then be fully wound up for the 1989 final series. The rest is history as he kicked a record 27 goals from 4 final games and played football at a level that has never been seen and is unlikely to be seen again. That 1989 final series conclusively showed to the football world that Gary Ablett Senior was clearly the best footballer to have played the game in at least the past 55 years and probably the 'best of all time', such was his greatness at the peak of his powers.

It was reported in 1989 that those huge games at the MCG were attracting at least 5,000 additional footy fans from other clubs to watch Gary play..... he was that good to watch and play our great game!

You have a great memory Gaz as that is precisely how the day panned out.
In fact, there is highlights reel about to be released and shows Ablett's entire career in detail and that hit on Lyon is part of it. Grinter & Lyon double-teammed him and he got fed up with Lyon's close checking and whacked him off the ball. Not dissimilar to Nash's hit on Miers a few weeks ago.

If you are arguing that the usual interpretation is different to this then you are wrong.
No, there are plenty of examples of it not being paid. That is my exact point. It is almost never paid.

Blicavs does the same thing 18 minutes to go in the last and isn’t pinged.

Sidebottom does the same thing with 10:40 to go in the last and isn’t pinged.

Holmes does it with 9:50 to go and doesn’t get pinged.

It happens literally dozens of times per game.

'Not great' My Tilly: but 'selective'. Been fortunate to see Gary Ablett Snr play his entire career, even way back to his first game which was at Kardinia Park against Fitzroy and there were big wraps on Gazza then about him being a possible VFL star. I walked away from the game that day convinced in my own mind that Gary Ablett was going to be a 'superstar' as he'd run faster than a speeding train and jump tall buildings in a single bound and Greg Williams who played with Gary as a team-mate on that auspicious day said so himself. Gary Ablett Snr was a freak of nature and one thing's certain My Tilly:, I've never seen another player as good as him, Wayne Carey is the only player you could even try making a comparison with.

If you have arm free to dispose of the ball you can.

  • 18.6.4 Holding the ball: No Genuine Attempt– Where a Player in Possession of the Football has not had Prior Opportunity, a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick if the Player is able to, but does not make a genuine attempt to Correctly Dispose of the football within a reasonable time when Legally Tackled.

He wasn't tackled though. Blitz even said in the post match Cameron didn't tackle him, he just stood there really.

So how is it HTB 🤨

I've only watched it again just now and Blitz was right.

No prior though?

It wasn't held into him though. As soon as Cameron put a hand on him, he pulled the ball back into his body. The arm with the ball was always free, he just chose to try and ride it out for a stoppage and take some time off the clock.

Good intent but it didn't work. I'm not critical of Blitz for doing it but the longer he held it I knew he was going to correctly be pinged.

Irrespective as to right or wrong call, Blics was attempting what they train to do: hold it up. They'd already had one ball up, and we know Umps like to move the game. He actually did take seconds off the clock until Pies moved the free on with scintillating speed.

In a sliding doors moment that play, if it came any earlier could have been delivered to any of four Pies players other than Crisp, who had gathered at the top of F50 with our defenders all behind them. So woulda, shoulda ,coulda. Luck is a fortune, and Blics doesn't have to beat himself up, unlike Crisp.

Their first mistake was deciding ex-star players were a priority over competent calling. And their special comments aren't that special, so obvious, vanilla cliches. I think recent retirees with demonstrable communication and analysis skills, selected through a screening process. not the old boys club would play better with fans.
Recent ex-coaches do much better. Put Simpson or Longmire in there.
I love hearing Simpson speak about football.

If someone is using the free kick count to make a point, you can basically immediately dismiss them. Even if a Geelong fan does the same, I know to tune out.

Free kicks can go up because a desperate team gets sloppy or panicked or they are stretching to try to assert themselves or apply pressure, or because they are fatigued. Was any that part of King's analysis? No. Did he look at each incident and assess it on its merits based on the actual rules? No.

Of course there are times when incorrect free kicks are given. And sometimes they come in groups. An unbalanced free kick count might give us reason to review what happened to look for issues. But point me to the specific incident, and the rule, and walk me through why it's wrong. Or else seriously, STFU.
Something that never gets talked about is that usually (not always) the free kick count and 50/50 decisions go to the team with the better pressure, getting first to the ball, driving the game forward and generally playing better. Momentum often (not always) rubs off on the umpires and the team doing those things is also in more positions to win free kicks.

Now of course there are exceptions. But the number one way to receive fair or even beneficial umpiring is to play hard, and play well.

I don’t have Geelong goggles on. Hill was stiff not to get HTB against Mannagh.

You can’t attempt a disposal when you’re immediately tackled.
Yeah, it’s so 50/50. I cannot tell what’s holding the ball and what isn’t. It’s almost like the umpire has a quota and he just blows the whistle immediately for 15 - as ball ups; and then the 16th he’ll hold off on whistling and wait - and then call holding the ball.

There were plenty of almost the same situation during the game.

I watched the game again and I saw Blicavs do the same thing in the 3rd quarter and it was just a ball up.

Im not sure how the result changes my assertion that Scott had a mare last night at selection?

Either Kolo is fit or he isnt, the fact that he was named as an emergency indicates that he is match fit at least and therefore couldve played if needed. Given how depleted we are down there, and the knock on effect it has for other players, keeping him out was a big mistake, which was then compounded by the Stanley injury.

In addition, we were one shank away from losing that game, and if it wasnt for a few who stood up we wouldve lost comfortably given how much Collingwood dominated us for large portions of the game. Teams have clearly worked out a gameplan that works against us. That was the third game in a row we have been beaten in almost every key stat. Scott doesnt appear to have any answer for it. Are you really happy that the outcome so far this year is coming down to whether or not Dangerfield can turn it on and pull us over the line?

Theres my opinion on Scotts performance last night, im keen to hear your counter argument. Or are you just going to post more rubbish about being embarassed on an anonymous football forum? Clearly you care way more about that than i do, which says a lot about you. But its hardly surprising given how much of you "life" you spend on here.
I don't like comments like your last sentence. The whole last paragraph is borderline, the stuff before it was fine. Comments on our lives due to spending time here? Seriously? Toxic stuff this forum would be better off without.

Pretty sad day if we start cheerleading election results.

Our country is going down the toilet and neither of the 2 major political parties have any intention of doing anything meaningful to address it.

Our political system is full of some very ordinary people with not a great deal to offer. When people start voting Teals I think it says a bit about Labor and the Coalition
Thank you for saying it. I for one do not want to see politics in these threads.

Dogs’ fans comments are so salty + hilarious.

Frankly, Baz was played out of position at Dogs, who have a strong midfield. It’s normal to want to play in a position where you excel.

During negotiations + upon joining Geelong they crapped on that Baz was no good, glad he’d left + we could have him, no loss.

Now they’re putridly salty because Baz is playing brilliantly + joked about Ballarat. Baz is right, Mars has a capacity of 11,000. Geelong kept their home ground + continues to improve it + can now hold 54,000. Playing games at MCG are blockbusters! Naturally players would prefer large crowds.

“Speaking to Cats great Cameron Mooney on Fox Footy after the game, Smith said he felt at home at Geelong and was really enjoying his footy there. “They’ve welcomed me with open arms, so I’m just forever in debt to this club. So I’ll keep working my arse off to repay them." 😻
10/10 for saying ar$e instead of insipid ass.

Baz is a treasure. I love him + that sincerity, fabulous player + his antics 😻
I was told on the main board yesterday

"You love Smith now. So did we. But you just wait..."

And that his comment meant he was headf***ed, the Dogs were living rent-free in his head and that he is a real campaigner. Even if those things are all true, the hyper emotional reactions they are having to every single thing Smith does, suggests they are still obsessed with him too.

Spot on Hinkely29:.... great call 👍

Woods are going to miss Daniel McStay for a time because in tandem, him and Brody Mihocek work well together and collectively are more dangerous. But yeah, throw in Jack Henry, Kolo and Stewart into that backline and we've got the Magpie forwards well and truly covered next time around. Also Hinkley29:..... getting games into our array of talented youngsters at present and especially winning big important games in 'finals type atmosphere' like last night against the Magpies is a huge bonus as they're only going to grow in confidence and get better. The cherry on top is 'IF' we can get Toby Conway up and firing at some stage in the second half of year as I've stated for sometime now that one day he'll be in the top 3 ruckman in the AFL and GO CATS !!!

PS - Some Geelong posters need to look at the bigger picture with regards to some of our youngsters and less experienced players, as in time many of them are going to be excellent AFL footballers. Some of the comments in particular on Oisin Mullin this season have lacked vision and foresight as there'll come a day when this kid is going to be an excellent AFL player and critical to us going forward, he just needs time but thankfully the coaches do see that in him and one day we'll ALL reap the rewards.
I agree.

Clearly the coaches believe that drilling the players on the style they want is more important than the exact personnel they have.

Blicavs, Crisp and McRae spoke about how well coached the Cats are and how they can adapt because they have practiced all scenarios.

Scott was intimating this during the press conference- saying it was the team adjusting, not individual players stepping up.

I like this attitude as he’s willing to pit young inexperienced players against very experienced players.

Win lose or draw, there’s a lesson and learning from it.

Not really - under the new stand rule, once a player mans the mark you can't replace who's on it

As Guthrie was the one in marking contest, he was always going to be the one standing the mark and it was going to be difficult to make a swap once that happened
Yep, forgot about the stand rule that you can’t change the 1st player on the mark.
Speaking of manning the mark, did you notice Maynard after whinging to the umpire stood the mark on Danger’s kick for goal with hands on his knees not bothering to jump or raise his arms. Really unprofessional

Is there any other player in the AFL like Dangerfield at the moment? You rarely see someone hunt the footy, hit the contest like a freight train and look like such a dominant beast. Much respect to the man, he really loves the game.
Perhaps Selwood?
A purrfect captain 😻
Multiple premierships as a player + captain
Now Dangerfield has stood up ♥️
I’m absolutely 😻staggered😻 happily that at 35

Selwood was incredible even as his body was clearly broken down. More like a veteran soldier who had been in a bunker for a whole campaign, down to one leg but refusing to give up.

Dangerfield though, is like a tank. Smashing through enemy lines and destroying things. The power, velocity with that mass is pure wrecking ball stuff. And it's always a sight to see it coming from those charging leads in the forward line. His aerial contesting alone is remarkable for a 35 year old medium sized player.

It was nothing like Nash’s hit on Miers.
It was an off the ball hit at a stoppage. Probably the cheapest hit of Senior’s career.

Vdubs can we get a friendly update on how many games you think Geelong will win in May? Has it moved from 0 to 1? ;)
was it me this year that said zero?
was last year
although very good reasons to worry about every game we have in May
;)

I think he is excellent , wasnt that keen at all when Geel were trying to recruit him to be perfectly honest

I like his kicking effortless , and a really good kick and to Geelongs advantage normally

And i like how switched on and focussed he is , very determined , where as some players aernt

Duncan got smashed on this board during the week , probably great coaching by Chris Scott , he really made Mitch earn his spot , , and if he keeps playing like that he will play in 80%of the remaining games

Youve got to get a match winning lead when your well on top , last years PF ( Holmes hamstring injury certainly didnt help ) could have opened a big lead in the 3rd qtr but didnt , and last nights game in the 3rd qtr- particularly 1st 20 minutes Coll could have got a commanding lead but didnt , and its great that the Cats are the best last qtr team in the comp , and that has been a really good trait of Geel over many years now , very strong finishes

So all in all a pretty good win

Agreed.
I thought he was not the sort of player that would fit our structure, but he's certainly better than I recall him being as a Dog.
