Someone tried to group his performances since returning in with Sicily last week. I think he's actually ranged between decent and very good. He used to be outstanding so yes there's been a drop off, but geez we mark our former AA level players harshly at times.

That was me. And you have misrepresented my post which actually said that he hasn’t been as bad as Sicily but well below the level we expect to see from him. Heartening to see him return to form this evening. Played with a lot more confidence and self assuredness.

Disagree. He'll be right up there but won't have a big lead. Sidebottom and Elliot are stealing a lot of votes this year. Plus Daicos hasn't been nearly as good or consistent as 2024.

It's Naicos, he gets votes just for breathing. The industry (media, umpires, ex-players) is committed to this idea of him becoming the GOAT so they all start from the premise that everything he does is amazing and award-worthy and then work backwards from there to justify it. I agree he hasn't been exceptional, but that won't matter.

"Whether it's due to injury, lack of form or just an indication of decline remains to be seen. But with both these players there has been no appreciable turnaround at this stage of the season."

I said you grouped Stewart in with Sicily. You did. Sicily's decline has been much, much worse (plus sustained) and now he's not playing. Stewart since returning has been imperfect, but he's been using the ball well and finding some touch. He's been building and that's how you end up with a game today.

It's not a big deal, it just wasn't an accurate call IMO.

Everything you have stated is why I think he'll be top 3 (as opposed to not top 10) right now. If he was playing extremely well each week then those factors would be why he's leading by 10 votes instead of 3.

Great win. I was very impressed with Holmes and Stengle's games. Everyone did their job. The Cats showed the physicality we saw in Round 1 against Freo. Their pressure rating was over 200 every quarter. I agreed with Max when he said the Catters haven't even hit their straps yet, which is scary for the rest of the comp. Another coaching masterclass from Scotty and his team.

I thought the Sun's midfield battled manfully and didn't lower their colors overall, but the Cats' defense and forwards just played the conditions better. Man, imagine if we could get Rowell in our midfield. Our midfield would be unstoppable.

I linked the two because both are all Australian’s, of similar age, who have had elite careers. Both have (up until this week) been well down on what we expect from them as consistently brilliant players each week. Stewart has been shaky underneath the ball until tonight. His kicking hasn’t been anywhere near as bad as Sicily’s but well below normal. Even tonight he still missed an easy short kick that he normally would never fluff.

Anyway, good to see him return to form. Tonight I thought he was great. I wasn’t and didn’t write him off with that post. Merely was questioning why his form had dropped.

Well done to the mids.

Stanley was terrific against a massive unit. Atkins, Holmes just terrific and equally as important were the jobs MOC and Mullin did on Anderson and Miller. Blitz also played really well. On paper you’d expect we would get outplayed there.

They allowed the other areas of the ground, where we had more talent, to get the job done.

Great team effort

Have you watched every Hawthorn game? Sicily has been an absolute liability, not just slightly off the boil. To the point where his team mates were dropping their heads after his continued monumental f ups.

I didn't say you wrote Stewart off. I just didn't think his recent form has been as dismal or destructive as Sicily. He's been shaking off cobwebs in some areas (but using the ball well...mostly), along with expected decline of a player his age when injuries arrive.

I have no idea how you even came to that conclusion
Realistically I think that comment is crazy

Because by 10 years I assume you are talking about play a lot of games ie 100 + and he won't get enough opportunities here if he stayed a lot of years he would just be a depth backup player (think like David Johnson was) he needs a bottom club where he can get games every week and I doubt he gets that here.

Could just be Stanley is playing the best footy of his career.

Which is what I said. That Sicily has been far worse. Which he has. I’ve watched nearly every Hawks game. He’s been an absolute liability.

Anyway, think we’ve done this to death. At least I’m sure we can both agree that Stewart played his best game this season tonight. And by a margin.

Strongly disagree but that’s ok
