We were never winning the flag in 05, regardless of whether we beat the swans or not.

Yeah that’s a big call when we still had two more games after the Sydney semi.
StKilda was the team that really should have gone on to win it, but they absolutely shat the bed the following week

Until Conway can prove that he can get out of bed without hurting himself, we need to assume that he will be a non factor at our footy club.
Durability is a skill, probably the most important skill a player can have. and he has shown zero durability.
May have mentioned it before but it is interesting that the cats wer a team back in the day notable for having durable and reliable ruckmen who would turn up and do the job week after week. Bourke, Hampshire, Farmer, Barnes, King, Blake…Ottens ( maybe during his peak)

Ottens, Bourke, King, Hooper and Handley were a run of hugely injury prone ruckmen during the 90s and 2000s - Barnes was the only one who really stayed on the park throughout.

Barnes? He lost the first 4-5 years of his career due to injury and then left geelong cos his body was struggling to stand up.

King only got injured in the later part of his career. Was quite good in the front half.

Bourke was the opposite of durable.

13 seasons in the league, 124 games played. In 13 season he played more than 9 games 4 times. He had 2 seasons where he played more than 14 games. He was very talented, but made of glass unfortunately.

Re: Barnes - yeah, I didn't know much about his first few years at Essendon but you're right.

The one point I would make about him leaving Geelong is that it was my memory that he broke his arm, rather than any kind of injury-prone-style injury, and King played him out of the side. He then went on to play full seasons at Essendon.

Yeah, King was durable up until 2003... then injury hit him and he was never half as good again. He was only 24 at that point. Rucking a kid into the ground - we wouldn't do it nowadays.

There are people voting in the upcoming election that would likely not have any living memory of seeing these players play

Bourke was probably one of the least durable rucks we ever had. He got injured trying to hit someone.

Really talented ruckman though.
Put it this way, we've drafted a phlanx of young ruckmen, presumably in hope of piffing enough darts at the board and hoping one sticks.

And of those guys... Toby Conway, Back, TBC. Mitch Edwards, Pelvis, 3 to 4w. Jacob Molier, Hamstring, 2 to 3w. What a great sign.

There are people voting who were well and truly alive then who have no memory of seeing those players

AFLCA votes are in:

Geelong v Melbourne

10 Patrick Dangerfield (GEEL)
5 Connor O'Sullivan (GEEL)
4 Shaun Mannagh (GEEL)
4 Bailey Smith (GEEL)
4 Zach Guthrie (GEEL)
2 Sam De Koning (GEEL)
1 Steven May (MELB)

Mannagh is a surprise. I didn’t think he was quite that excellent.

I'm thinking Mannagh scored the 3 & 1 from coaches

  • Dangerfield: 5 & 5
  • O'Sullivan: 3 & 2
  • Smith: 4
  • Guthrie: 4
  • Mannagh: 3 & 1
  • SDK: 2
  • May: 1
