Although Riley Thilthorpe and Max Holmes are closing fast, Gulden is probably the best player taken in that draft still and would obviously be worth more than Neale - tall or short.

Yeah, the fact he's barely played this year has probably made me forget just how good his last two seasons have been. Absolute steal, though Adelaide, Sydney, or Geelong wouldn't be complaining about any of those picks, whether it was pick #2, #20, or #32/33.

And the fact that Gulden plays off-Broadway, as it were - IMO if he played for a bigger Melbourne club, we'd know a lot more about it right now.

The only reason we got Neale is because the Swans matched our bid on Errol Gulden. It's interesting to think what would've happened if they hadn't, since Gulden is more than a handy player himself...but good KPFs are worth their weight in gold, so while 18 months ago I would've 100% said Gulden would be worth more, I wouldn't say that now. Neale is worth just as much (if not more) not just because of his importance structure, but in terms of how he's now contributing more weeks than not.
Would he have lasted until pick 47 and would we have used that pick on him?

I think the first quarter showed the problem with having such a soft drawer currently. Port came out with a bit more system and fight than what we got against Norf last week, and it took our guys a quarter to adjust to it before taking control of the match. But it did have some highlights like Jezza kicking six, Jack Martin's four goals in five minutes, and watching the terrific defensive footy played in the midfield. Neale looked imposing, and it's good to see him taking strong marks. I love the evolution of Mullins, and he is proving the usual naysayers wrong (again) and developing into a very good AFL player. Overall, only a game that a Geelong supporter would like to watch.

Always such a crapshoot, trying to predict what clubs would have done after pick 20. Phantom drafts and Rookie Me all had him going between 35 and 60.

That said, it's important to bear in mind that he was seen at the time as a ruckman first and foremost, I don't think anyone really picked him as a CHF who pinch-hits.

As iameviljez said, it's hard to know. Just looking through who was chosen, not many KP players...however, maybe Richmond would've picked him instead of Ryan at #40, especially if he was touted as a ruck?

The fact that he's still 4 years away from his prime is terrifying. Already kicking mini-bags at an elite level..
He is starting to play with authority now , he looks like he knows he belongs and is relishing it.
Hands are really solid now , can play the groundball , looks for his teammates and is a sublime set shot kick.
203cm athletic beast who is still a pup - scary proposition.

We need to ensure we look for him when he's on - just like we did in the 3rd 1/4.

Well yes the opposition is not much chop at the moment but that game was a lot better than the the North game, where we fumbled and screwed it up a lot in general.

Under no illusions regarding the pressure levels Port brought to the game, but I think this week's effort was more polished and we took the right options a lot more.

Plus it was the COVID draft year - very, very little predictability and exposed form. I mean, half the board was up in arms that we swapped for Holmes...

Taken a while for some to see how important Mullin is. Becoming a very good player. Closing speed and strength in close is insane.

He’s scalped a few this year. N Daicos and Butters are just 2. Reckon he gets coaches votes again.
Absolutely agree. Mullin's sheer athletic traits are pretty incredible. And now he's starting to learn how to read the game. I've been on him from day one and am really happy to see him finding his feet. It just takes some patience sometimes. There's plenty more improvement in him yet.

That was a very ordinary draft - if you were to redo it now, we'd arguably have scored two top five picks, Gulden, Thilthorpe and McCreery being the other three. (Who knows where JUH would go)

We are developing him incredibly well and clearly he's a fast learner.
His skills under pressure are improving rapidly and it shouldn't be underestimated how he's able to go to his non preferred left when needed.
He might be a tagger primarily at the moment but I can see we will develop an attacking side over the preseason and he'll add that to his game next season.

Yeah - I guess that's what happens when you lose the most important year of player development to COVID.

He'll end up a very good midfielder once he learns the game. And his learning curve will be very steep getting to follow blokes like N Daicos Butters and Rowell all over the park in the meantime.

No coincidence either that Mullins improvement has also pushed O'Connor outside the midfield / run with role that he previously had.

At most clubs he would have been the key forward from no later than his second year, struggled the entire year, lost confidence and then be delisted at the end of year 3.

We called out the name of 3 of the best 5 (taking the liberty of adding Gulden) from the draft, bizarrely in a year we traded out 3 first round picks for Cameron.

We have an absolute gem here.
It isn’t just his brilliant kicking. What he does off the ball is also excellent.
6 tackles.
He also had 5 inside 50s.
He’s a serious weapon who’s only going to get better.
Neale’s attributes are incredibly good -add speed to that list. His ‘utility’ as second ruck is also going to become more valuable post Stanley and Blitz. Great they got an extension but (assuming continuing rate of development) going to have to plan for possibly a sizeable upgrade down the track.

We still have to remember to be patient. I think players like Harris Andrews at Brisbane, Taylor at GWS will get hold of him but he is developing extremely well and has the purest kicking action I have seen in a long time.

I put my hand up to being one of the cohort that doubted his ability to make it in his early years (have to include last year) but he has made me eat my words. Looking back one the biggest things that I think held him back was a lack of confidence and a belief that he belonged that is why I think we need to patient with Knevitt (he looks like a kid that struggles with confidence and in believing he belongs) and to a lesser extent Clark and Stevens.

Having a soft draw is not a problem. Its a benefit. We are entering finals fit. Other teams are coming in battered like we were mid year after all our tough games in the front half of the year.

Ps. In the first qtr we dominated play but just couldnt kick straight.

Speaking of Scratcher

8) 'What about me?' The other big Cat to cover

In all the hoo-hah over Jeremy Cameron’s hunt for the hundred, Shannon Neale’s emergence as a forward force has been overlooked. After kicking eight goals in his first 10 games this season, the big Cat has kicked 26 in the next 10, including three in Sunday’s win over Port Adelaide. Having two potent targets in attack is a massive weapon come September, and the way Neale came to life as soon as the Power focused on Cameron shows how hard it will be for opponents to shut down Geelong's scoring at the business end of the season. And that was before Jack Martin thrust himself into the already exciting forward mix. – Howard Kimber

Agreed. Stengle in particular butchered shots he would kick 99 times out of 100

Was not sure where to post this. Did anyone that was at the ground get the email during the second quarter regarding the members day give aways that the club said would be sent in their email to members last week?

My email came at about 3/4 time

But at halftime they announced 6 or 7 bays where members in those sections had won instant prizes that were available for collection - that part wasn't done well, as I was out on the concourse and couldn't understand what they were saying. They should have put that info up on the scoreboard and screens around the ground, as well as repeating the message throughout the break

I like the idea behind the recognition & giveaway, but definitely areas they can improve upon how it's done
