We had another somewhat similar player. Little footy experience, but showed athletic ability at the beginning, and after a few seasons of learning the game started to become one of our most important players. His name is Mark Blicavs.

The announcement must have been in the time I took a toilet break. I did not receive an email at all. I don't need the giveaway but if the club is going to run the membership recognition and giveaway and I think it is a good initiative then they have to do it a whole lot better. I think they would have had a lot of disappointed kids yesterday.

They'd be better off sending a thankyou email to all members who attended on the Monday after the game (so today) and include the giveaway as part of that

There was plenty of of positives to come from Geelong's big win over Port Adelaide, the Cats kicking away after quarter time and cruising to a dominant 88-point win at GMHBA Stadium.

Jeremy Cameron kept the 100-goal dream well and truly alive with another six-goal haul, Max Holmes run amok in an incredible display and a number of other Cats' reached career high statistics throughout the afternoon.

But there was also a number of instrumental performances that helped steer the Cats to a big win on Sunday, further entrenching them in the top four with three games left in the home and away season.

Take a look at some of the key storylines to come from Sunday's victory over the Power.


1. Cats Defence Becoming AFL's Intercept Kings​

Geelong's offense has deservedly got plenty of attention the past two weeks with a pair of big scores on the board, but the Cats defensive unit is also looking rock solid and is building momentum heading towards September.

Tom Stewart and Zach Guthrie lead the way on Sunday with eight intercept possessions each, closely followed by Jack Henry (six), Lawson Humphries and Sam De Koning (five).

The even contribution has been a trademark of Geelong's defence this year, with five different players collecting over 90 intercept possessions so far in 2025 including Connor O'Sullivan (108), Jack Henry (105), Zach Guthrie (102), Tom Stewart (98) and Sam De Koning (94).

What makes that stat even more impressive is that Guthrie is the only one to have featured in every game this year.

O'Sullivan and Henry also produced a pair of highlight reel moments on Sunday, launching over the top of their Port Adelaide opponents to take two very impressive grabs.


2. Mullin's Phenomenal Role on Butters​

Quickly becoming one of the scariest opponents for some of the competition's top midfielders, Oisin Mullin added another feather to his cap with a sensational performance against Power star, Zak Butters on Sunday.

After doing a terrific job against him earlier this year, the Irishman went to another level in Round 21 restricting Butters to just 10 disposals and four clearances, while also winning four clearances and four score involvements of his own.

Butters' disposal count was his lowest in a non-substitute affected game since 2020, which was just his second season at the top level.

Mullin has certainly proven to be effective in his new role, a new dynamic that the Cats can utilise heading towards September.


3. Martin's Record-Breaking Haul​

Martin entered the game in the third quarter after starting as the substitute and wasted no time, kicking the quickest four goal-haul by any player this century.

In the space of five minutes and 16 seconds, Martin kicked the Cats another 24 points clear and helped to set up an unassailable lead at the final break.


4. Dangerfield's Selfless Performance​

10 different Geelong players hit the scoreboard on Sunday afternoon and Patrick Dangerfield was able to kick one himself, but the skipper was instrumental in a number of scoring plays and helped set up his teammates on several occasions.

Dangerfield finished the match with five goal assists, the third highest total in a game for the champion Cat across his illustrious career, and also the second highest total of any player in the AFL this year.

It also marks the second time Dangerfield has dished off five goal assists in a game in 2025, taking his tally to 23 goal assists for the season which is the third most of any player in the AFL, despite missing two games in the middle of the year.


5. Cats Pressure Inside 50 Hitting New Heights​

It has been well publicised this year, but Geelong's pressure inside forward 50 just continues to get better and better each week.

Laying another 15 tackles inside 50 against Port Adelaide, the Cats maintained their average of 14.7 per game across the 2025 season which is comfortably the highest average of any team in the AFL.

Four Geelong players rank inside the AFL's top 10 for tackles inside 50 this year including Tyson Stengle (second), Tom Atkins, Shaun Mannagh (tied third) and perhaps most impressively, Shannon Neale (seventh).

Not sure I see Neale getting the 4 votes from either coach which is why I leaned towards him getting 2 from each coach. If not for that and if we put our dominance on the board it would have been 6 goals to 1 or 2

It's a same in any sport, the scrubber teams bring your game down to their level. They clamp up a well oiled machine, so badly they'll fuel errors and fluke an occasional win. One of the reasons we hate the scrums of the past boring Lyon teams.

The first quarter and a bit felt exactly like a Lyon-style game. Eventually they couldn't manage to continue to do it and we broke their spirit so badly they capitulated.

I expect the last three games to be very similar, though the Swans resistance will be far greater.

A few of the players were given new songs a month or so ago based on a fan good vote thingy

Along with the updated songs for Holmes & Miers was
  • Jumping Jack Flash for Jack Henry
  • Ballroom Blitz for Blicavs


Not sure we've heard either since the updated song choices - and maybe Blicavs misses have been because he's not a fan of the song 😉
