If they were so adamant on a bowling all rounder they genuinely should have picked Cummins.
Better batsman than Stoinis
Did you really just suggest cummins. He hasn't even been bowling that well. He also just started his first shield game in god know how long

Stoinis' career Shield bowling record - 51.45 average, 86.75 strike rate, 3.55 economy rate.

I don't think Cummins should be in India (I want to see him string together a bunch of Shield games before any Test consideration), but the bolded is just bullshit.

Took 4 in the first innings against SA but in the 9 matches before that (admittedly all short format) he took more than 1 scalp only twice, and on those occasions it was only 2 wickets.

So it's not as though he's been torching everyone

Short form is not relevant, he's already in our LOI sides. First class is very important because he has to bowl more than 10 overs, and he hasn't done that for like six years.

I didn't suggest he should be there, I would rather Henriques, Cartwright or even Head.

I do think he'd be a better option than Stoinis given that he was picked strongly on his bowling.

Patto has not been the same bowler since his latest injury though.

Actually, he kind of has. He's always been a good strike bowler with the tendency to go for a few runs (he's actually the most frequent wicket-taker the Test team has had in over 100 years), but who is more effective in the long form than the short stuff.

25.66 average, 39.89 strike rate, 3.86 economy rate in the Shield this year. Reign in the loosies a bit (which will probably happen naturally with consistently playing), and he's as good as ever.

Well I agree with that too, but if he was in the sort of form he was alleged to be in above, he'd probably have been ripping through teams in other formats too

We have to take into account re Cummins that it is only the Redbacks. Since the break they have been appalling with the bat.

Well, even despite that, Lehmann and Cooper have been among the top run-scorers in Shield cricket this year, Ferguson is a recent Test representative, and Head is a Test hopeful, and the team made the Shield final last year, and is ahead of NSW on the table this year. They're not exactly pushovers or bunnies.

People seem reluctant to admit it or want to put an asterisk next to it for whatever reason, and he's got a long way to go before he should be considered for Test selection, but Cummins has bowled well in his return to Shield cricket, and he's bowled well in limited overs cricket this summer too.

Should've been a batting all-rounder. We'd only need someone to roll down 8-10 overs. More important that the no.6 makes runs.

Well Stoinis is a batting all rounder, as are Agar and Maxwell, so after persisting with the bowling all rounder for the first 2 tests, it looks like they have learnt their lesson

Stoinis shouldn't be near the squad at all. I know it's highly unlikely that he'll play in the last two tests anyway, but just seems like a bit of a mockery really. Henriques should be the one replacing Marsh in the side if they want an all-rounder (over Maxwell and Agar as well). He might not be express pace or particularly tricky, but they just need that bowler to a) bowl some maidens and keep the pressure on the batsmen, and b) provide some cover for Starc/Hazelwood in the event of injury or a batter's paradise.

Gee, that Stoinis selection is baffling. Given how little we have used the fifth bowler, it really should have been Head. A batsman in form capable of bowling three overs an innings.
Henriques > Head. Head can't play spin.

Plus why bother bowling 3 overs of part time offspin as the 5th bowler? We have Lyon for offies already. A medium pacer makes more sense as that option.

Not to mention Maxwell is already on tour and would play as the offspinning allrounder, which seems likely. Picking Head wouldn't make sense as he wouldn't jump ahead of Glenn in the pecking order.

Head should have been picked ahead of Maxwell in the first place.

But my point was, the bowling doesn't matter one way or another because Smith doesn't use them. It's irrelevant what his bowling is similar to. Pick someone based on their batting.

Maxwell is a better FC cricketer than Head. He's very underrated in whites, if you ask me.

Hasn't done much this season, if I recall, though I understand other issues have been at play. Head well ahead for mine over the past two seasons. Hell, people had Patterson ahead of Maxwell when spots opened up a couple months ago.

KP was in a rare run of form then to be fair, it's slowed down a bit since.

Maxwell is a bit of a personal pick for me, as I suspect he could do a Warner and defy expectations in turning himself into a very good Test player given the opportunity. Either that or he remains an Afridi. I just don't rate Head that highly.

Would love Ponting as chairman of selectors, don't think he'd have much interest in it though.

We need more guys with recent relevance in the game. That actually have a clue.

All I can say is that Maxwell must be a true blue shit bloke if he's overlooked for the 3rd test.

Can't play any FC matches because he's always 13th man in the ODIs. Can't play FC matches when he's in the test squad, played **** all cricket. Overlooked for a clearly injured and out of form Michelle Marsh
