Changes for next Week

That is because despite popular opinion we do actually try to attack and as soon as it comes unstuck we go back into our defensive style. And I don't think that is neccessarily a decision our coach makes halfway through a quarter, I think it is a lack of confidence. What Craigy has to do is some how give our players the courage to take the game on regardless of the result. That is so much easier said than done.

Maybe that courage to continue to moving forward would be easily obtained if they had someone in front of them leading out for the ball. Rather than having 10 players around the ball trying to made a 30 cm hand ball each time.

Having player behind the ball sounds like the coach to me.

You mean 6 forwards, 6 midfielders and 6 defenders...I like it. Maybe the game has gone full circle and the way to beat these zones and flooding is with a traditional structure.

In - Knights and Maric

Out - Cook (May struggle with his corky) and Stevens (needs to regain confidence)

Playing Maric will enable us to play Tippett at CHF

Make no mistake last night was a poor & unacceptable performance ... but let's not go overboard with changes.

This will be an up & down year as we play the kids - get used to it & keep things in perspective! Need to think about the long term...

So what should we change this week?

Stevens - in our best 22 when fit, but clearly not over the illegal McPharlin hit on last 2 weeks performance. Send him back to SANFL to get form ASAP. For me Moran in for Stevo.

Griffin needs to lift his game, but give him a decent go before dropping for Maric.

Cook - same as Griffin - give the guy more than 2 games straight to show his worth.

McLeod - on notice!!!

B: Johncock, Rutten, Otten
HB: Reilly, Bock, Goodwin
C: Dangerfield, Vince, Mackay
HF: Edwards, Tippett, Douglas
F: Walker, Moran, Porplyzia
R: Griffin, van Berlo, Thompson
I: McLeod, Cook, Patrenko, Doughty

In: Moran
Out: Stevens

Maric has to come in next week, those bagging Stevens I thought Stevo went down back in the 2nd half to get in the hole to stop the murdering that Wazza was giving truck. I wasnt at the game and it's hard to tell on TV, but I could have sworn that is what happened in the second half.

I would bring in Maric put Tippet pretty much up forward all game, Norwood have a bye so I dont see the value in dropping Walker to play SANFL reserves especially when we dont really have any forwards to come in. There is also another problem where Walker will have to stay in the side because I see no other option than for Stevo to have to play in defense in Bass' old role. To say that Truck needs help in a bad way is an understatement, he is struggling big time and unless we have someone to block the space he is just getting carved up week after week on the lead, we need Stevo and our ruck division to float back and ensure that we are not allowing them space to lead because at the moment any player on Truck in a one on one situation if the player leads Truck has no hope in hell of making it a contest. Tredders kicked 3 should have kicked 5 and would have kicked 10 if we didnt float Stevo back there in the 2nd half.

Out: Cook, Stevens
In: Knights, Moran/Maric

Knights needs to come back in, as much as people bash him on these boards I love his work rate and he just knows how to find the ball, this is the main area where Port smashed us last night. Knights for Cook.

Moran or Maric should come in for Stevens, let him find his feet in the SANFL. I haven't seen Moran play but from all he reports he is doing extremely well. I wouldn't bring in Smack just yet. Give Moran another shot or bring in Maric and have Tippy play in the forward line all night, even though I really like his current role. Tall for Tall.

We really needed Symes and his hardness last night, he loves to stick it up Port and really missed him last night. Would not surprise me to see him get a call up.

Biggest thing I would like to see change are the attitudes of some people on this board who are so quick to jump and criticize the team. We are developing and will be up and down all year. Expect brilliant performances one week and poor ones the next, its going to happen. Strap yourself in and enjoy the roller coaster of emotions. Lets get some perspective here :thumbsu:

Out: Douglas (simply not pulling his weight) Stevens (Desparately needs to find form)
In: Knights Moran

Really want to squeeze Jacky in somewhere to, if Cook doesn't come up should be in.

So everyone wants to dump Stevens, who spent the second half in defence, but for some reason think it's right to continue carrying Walker, the 19 year old with no form and no confidence? "Desperately needs to find form" does he? What a surprise, when things go wrong everyone chases after their favourite whipping boy for no particular reason other than he's not flashy, and it has to be him ahead of the wunderkind.

Stevens stays, Walker goes, Moran comes.

I don't want to be using Stevens as a whipping boy. I have Cook for that. I just feel he will really benefit from a run in the SANFL. I think its important for Walkers development and the future success of the team that we keep playing him week in week out, unless he desperately needs its. If he settles or had a senior player in his ear last night he might have walked back, settled and slotted that goal instead of playing on and snapping around the corner. If he puts a bit more on that ball in the last quarter he could have easily ended up with 3 goals.

I rate Stevo as one of our top 5 most important players but to me he really looked off the boil last night, that hit must still be affecting him a bit.

Where does Rutten play this week?

The Dogs just don't have a big forward up there for him to match up on. Robert Murphy is their CHF, then you've got guys like Brad Johnson, Jason Akermanis, Daniel Giansiracusa and Mitch Hahn. Will Minson and Brian Lake occassionally moonlight as key forwards but you'd think that Bock could handle them.

Is this the week where Rutten goes to full forward?

We've done it before against the Dogs. With minimal success it must be said.

Stevens was much worse than Walker. I don't think he's right at the moment. Walker needs confidence, not sure if that should be gained in the SANFL, or fought out in the Crows.

Minson will go forward quite a bit.

as we now play a Zone, match ups are becoming less of an issue, Defense now really becomes a thing of midfield pressure. If a team breaks a zone it could be anyone v anyone.

Ruttens ability to read play has been invaluable this year, not matter the criticism he's been getting, he's stopped many goals covering for Otten (I love him but his defensive abilities need honing), Bock (who provides run and can be caught out) and our running backs.

Where does Rutten play this week?

I had my preferred 22 all figured out, then i thought about the WB forward line also.

In general terms we need 1 more tall in the team imo for our forward structures.

But this week may not be the week to do it against the smaller, faster Dogs.

If his name wasn't Rutten I'd drop him for structural reasons but i know it wont happen...back to the drawing board!

Walker goes to the SANFL reserves ???

Will most probably kick a lazy 7 whilest providing no forward line pressure on the opposition.

I don't think that's quite right. Even though we use a zone, at centre bounces and every time there is a stoppage around the ground we go man on man. The only times we set up our zone is when we have the ball deep in our forward line.

It's tough this week as we have players in the SANFL that are there for a reason fighting for spots with players that are in average form.

The tough thing is picking omissions with Symes, Knights, Jacky, Mckernan, Moran and Maric being possible worthy inclusions.

Speaking of the Dogs is anyone surprised Welshy hasnt had a game this season ???

Obviously they finally worked out that they got a guy that goes missing in the big games and now understand why we didnt offer a contract close to what they offered him.

So now players shouldn't be dropped for poor form is their SANFL team has a bye?!

There is a hell of a lot more to form than kicking goals. Walker's problem is not kicking goals. He has kicked goal in every game this year. His problems are in other areas. Him kicking 7 in reserves will not get him a game in the AFL. Its the other areas that he needs to improve in dramatically.

He kicked 50 goals last year in the SANFL and still couldn't get a game with the Crows. That tells us that the Crows are not conerned with his goal kicking but with other areas of the game which are below par.

It's a tricky one with Walker.

I really hope that NC and the coaching are not worrying too much about the things he is doing wrong. I would hate to think that he keeps getting hauled off the ground, having his errors pointed out, viewing them again and again during the week... to the point that he loses confidence in himself.

What is most important for Walker this season is that he gains the confidence in his ability to play and compete at this level.

Fine tuning some of the defensive aspects would be nice, but they are not his prime responsibility as a forward and neither should they be their number one priority as a coaching group.

If there is too much of a negative focus on what he is doing wrong, this could adversly affect the things he is doing right.

Is he on the comeback trail from injury? Think I remember hearing that. May have played a couple of VFL games now.

Well said.

Yes, all 18 players need to defend strongly but in the end he is a FF/FP...lets pump up his tyres and getting him kicking 2-4 goals per week:thumbsu:

The confidence will likely actually improve his defensive efforts (assuming his fitness is decent).

In a perfect world, he would switch on defensively 100% of the time but he probably isn't that kind of player. Plenty of sensational forwards aren't! But, much like Welsh, he'll be far better defensively when kicking goals.

Thank God Modra is not playing these days...his goal count would be halved because he would spend more time on the wing than at full forward:rolleyes:
