Don't forget, we carried Richie Douglas, a midfielder, for 250 games with a career average disposals of 18, including not one 30+ disposal game after 2013 and not one league top 10 ranking stat since 2015.

We have history since 2000 of playing players until they physically can't play anymore. Especially vanilla roleplaying "Club men". It's ingrained in our ******* culture and it drives me crazy.

We didn't just carry him.

When he was so bad he couldn't even pretend to hack it in the midfield we butchered our forward line to let him keep playing.

So when fit he's equal 21 st player in the League, a lot of players behind him.

And don't come at me with the usual cop out Brownlow votes aren't a reasonable assessment of the players year.

Brownlow votes are NOT a ranking of how good a players are.

Want me to start listing all the forwards and backs who had a better year that year than Brad Crouch?

Keep on, keeping on, I'm enjoying you and your mates keeping on rubbishing him, it's not me that's looking stupid when he continues being rated by the AFL coaches

You mean all the AFL coaches, only 1 of who actually wanted him on their list?

How about AFL coaches votes then - had Lyons ranked in the top 20 players in the comp after the end of the minor round last year over thew hole season

When asked about ROC, Nicks says they "were pleasantly surprised by the way he went about it on the weekend. he didn't accumulate a hell of a lot of footy...he had 8 tackles in the end...".

So, 10 touches and 8 tackles in 56% TOG compared with out 2nd lowest possession 32yo midfielder with 14 touches and 2 tackles in 81% TOG.

Yeah, makes sense to me.

"Pleasantly surprised"

Also: dropped

Clearly not pleasantly surprised enough

Uhh, I've been a fan of Lyons since he was with us.

The conversation was about Crouch being overrated internally and he isn't even on that list.

So if we assume that ROC could manage the same game time as Mackay without dropping off he would have ended up with: 14 touches and 12 tackles.

So he'd have vastly outperformed Mackay.

oh, sorry, I know the initial discussion was between Mutineer and Feenix re Lyons and I thought it had just evolved and still had Lyons at the heart of it

All good, maybe I got lost in it too.

But yes I agree Lyons is a quality footballer. I've been an advocate of the idea we under appreciated him since we refused to use him as anything but the sub.

Agreed

If a young player puts in a 5-6 week stretch of poor performances that moves away from being just poor form and part of the normal ups and downs of being a young player to....

Maybe he's actually not that good and doesn't deserve a spot.

Dropping them in that case is fine.

The trouble is that we often give our young players 1-2 weeks tops. Or zero weeks in O'Connor's case.

Do we have the balls to back a young player in and ride out their teething problems?

I don't think we do and our approach will lead to us spinning our wheels rather than rebuilding.
Personally Iam confused about Hamill being dropped whilst we keep MacKay. Anyway it has caused such a storm on here. What I dont understand is why isnt there any questioning in the Advertiser. I went through the paper. There was a big article on Riewoldt, a smaller article on the Crows which was all about Walker and Ned but no questioning of why Hamill was dropped. Are we all over reacting..if not, what the hell are the Advertiser's journalistss doing???

Also said our biggest challenge this week was inside contest. Sooooo lets drop inside midfielder O'Connor and keep the experienced twig in :confusedv1:

Look mate Mackay averages 1.4 clearances a game and 5 contested possessions, he is clearly the answer on the inside

There is no such thing as journalism anymore.

It's either articles provided by the clubs for them, puff pieces or magazine styled editorials designed to upset groups. No such thing as actual research or investigation.

Of that list I'd call Thompson and Jacobs definitely better than just roleplayers.. but the point still stands.
Way better than role players, for once we agree.

And while Robert Shirley was a role player he was a bloody fine one at that with his run with role, Gaz jr paid him the ultimate accolade at one point stating that he was one of the best "run with" players he'd played on

2 reasons for this.

1. The number of journos made redundant over the last 5 or so years.

2. Consumers attention span has dropped and they only want a 1min read, and don't spend 15mins reading an in depth analysis.

Never shirks a contest, always puts his body on the line, consumate team man, never our worst.
True, but how many of our players do 'shirk a contest or don't put their body on the line.

That's not a reason to be in the team, it's a basic requirement to play footy at any semi-professional level.

If you're playing wing, you need to get the ball 20-25 each and every week, not once a year.

I changed my avatar to Back to the Future - Doc in response to backward-thinking selection policies several years ago. Have seen no reason to change it since then.
I try to get excited about getting some of the talented young players in the team, but then Biff selects the team each week :(
The comparison to Biff is harsh. Even Biff was successful in an alternate timeline. Matty Nicks is a loser in every universe.
