Figure some people have some high rage KPIs around here.

Fixing the bookend issues were, and are, priority number 1. By getting a second KPD and removing both Frampton and Himmelberg we have taken a giant leap forward. Okay Hamill out instead of Dmac sucks but that's not going to be the difference and Hamill is not going to fall in a heap by not playing this week.

Relax.

Your post is almost as bad as the Crows selection policy. Should have kept it in Fiji.

Like I, and others with sense, have pointed out we have addressed some major issues.

That's one opinion.

Hamill could have been omitted for any number of reasons and people are just focussed on a Hamill v Mackay issue which likely doesn't exist.

Why are you framing it like it is Hamill v Mackay when it is Mackay v Mackay?

Both Mackay and Hamill have been below average the last two weeks, but Hamill is our future and Mackay is supposed to be back up only.

The best bit is how many weeks of great SANFL performances do you think Hamill needs to be in a position to displace Mackay? And Mackay only needs one good game every 6 weeks to remove his name from the omit discussion. And what's a good game, 16 touches that includes 3 dinky one/two handballs, 3 handballs to about to be tackled teammates, 7 kicks to contests and 3 kicks to opponent's chests.

Then play a different kid, which we've done.

Dropping Hamill isn't the issue for mine, the retention of the other bloke is.

You can't separate the decision. It's Mackay or Hamill in that role, there's no other wing/half back option ready to go. Did they make the right call. Yes or no?

Don't worry, I know you can't answer.

These changes don't make sense. I can understand Walker for Frampton. Frampton is garbage so that's a no brainer. Murray or Worrell in as we are too small down back. The question is who you bring out for him. Surely a player you signed up for his final year at the club (Mackay) comes out. Are we still in contention for finals are we? Not the right player to leave in even if we were.

McHenry who is a pressure small forward for O'Connor who is a mid. Didn't Berry pressure enough last week? Wouldn't we have more flexibility with Berry and O'Connor rotating through midfield so we could have fresher legs in there in the last quarter instead of fading away as we have done over the last month. Wouldn't it be smarter to give McHenry another week off after a heavy concussion instead of rushing him back when the team last week looked the best it has all year.

Ever heard of 'selection integrity', apparently this is it.

That's probably what is the most frustrating. The other moves are decent (though a bit late on Murray), but then there's this big fat turd of decision in the middle of it all stinking up the joint.

I'm not convinced they're that decent. I doubt 1 week is enough for Tex, he'd have trained fully all last week pressing for selection. I doubt it reverses his form for any longer than this game, if at all, like Thommo in 2016. It wasn't just 2 poor games, 2 last half disappearing acts preceded those. And how good is a decision made 3 weeks after it became blindingly obvious to every one else that the structure needed correction? I guess they get a tick of sorts for finally making it, but it's a pretty bad sign that it took them this long.

Welp apart from Dmac I thought we improved at selection under nicks. Today we went backwards two years. Played McHenry and Jones all last year who spudded it up and drop O’Connor when he did well for his game time.

We can’t even tank properly, play youth

Very poor from a development point of view to drop O'Connor after one game. Sometimes when there is a squeeze on positions in a good team it's not possible to give a debut player a second game but in our case probably half the team are not AFL standard so it makes no sense. No logic to it.

It's worth noting most of the battle here for a coach is just generating buy-in at the moment, seeing there is going to be a lot of losing whilst everyone develops. There haven't been any genuine warning signs that is wavering with Nicks. It's kind of the opposite really, as Chayce Jones is really the indicator that Nicks is quite likely the right person, at the moment, for this part of the build. After all, he's found a way to get Jones to kick out that career death spiral he had found himself in during last year and the start of this year (noting we're not that far removed from his 5 disposal game as a midfielder against Woodville) and even got a pretty solid game at AFL level out of him. Whether he continues on or not is yet to be determined, but he looked finished a month ago as a footballer.

There are certainly red flags though that he'll get the McCarthy treatment once we're decently built up, but that's likely 3ish years away. He does like to shoot himself in the foot, repeatedly, which he really needs to get out of his system in the next year or so if he wants to avoid that fate. He's on track for an extension though, as much as we really shouldn't even be considering it until late next year.
The players are happier but Im not convinced that would change under a new coach. The Pyke/Burton regime was uniquely toxic. I doubt any other coach or GM could ruin the teams culture that badly.

Extracting a decent game of footy out of Jones is also meaningless. Pyke did that too and in the position he was drafted to play. Shunting Jones to the backline is a sign the coaching group has completely failed to develop him properly. We didnt intend to use a top 10 draft pick on a small defender. That is not a victory.

They really aren't that much older than us or experienced, crazy when you think about how far apart we are in ability.

The significant difference is the between 50-150 game spread, we barely have representation there whilst half of Melbournes side exists there. We won't get there any quicker dropping young players so we can carry someone to 250

Yep, ridiculous

If we were a flying top 8 contender then sure, O'Connor can be happy with his taste.

But there's not a gold standard 22 that O'Connor can't possibly crack as a newbie.

Instead there's a struggling team that is staring at being out of the finals for our fourth season in a row and desperately needs to develop players and find out about our list.

I know the club has used the "rebuild" world plenty but I wonder if anyone at the club has truly grasped what it means and where we are at?

Unless Hamill is being managed, this is the single most infuriating selection so far this year.
Yeah, it's a beauty isn't it?
There have been several candidates/nominations, though --- I think going over to WA with only one KPD was right up there.
Worrell's continued non-selection is mystifying too.

What I am most worried about is how these mysteries reflect upon Nicks and whatever his plan/s is/are going forward. If we trust him, then we have to trust that he has what he thinks are good reasons for all of the selection decisions, things about which we are not informed eg I looked with confidence at how happy Sholl was to sign on for another two years (obviously, he has bought into Nicks' plan/s).
If not, Nicks is a dead Coach walking and the Club will be faced with a re-rebuild after he gets the boot.

Congratulations, you have won a David MacKay player badge.

The mods should award the David Mackay Badge each year to the poster that posts a lot, but really doesnt contribute anything meaningful to the forum.

Then I realized, I would be winning it every year I was on here.:$

I guess we'll find out soon enough if he doesn't suit up for the SANFL team which would mean he's either the medi sub or being rested.

We screwed our selection up by bringing Hamill straight back into team after his ankle injury.

Hamill
R7 - DNP
R8 - 12 Disposals for 275m gained, 0 tackles.
R9 - 12 Disposals for 190m gained, 2 tackles.

McKay
R7 - 23 Disposals for 425m gained, 3 tackles.
R8 - 12 Disposals for 255m gained, 3 tackles.
R9 - 14 Disposals for 317m gained, 2 tackles.

These are woeful numbers by Hamill from a running half-back. To me Hamill has regressed since showing an ability to take the game on with run and dash in 2020. You have to wonder if multiple injuries/concussions have affected his confidence.

Brown, Smith, Jones all cemented their spots based on last weeks performance.

McKay wasn't brilliant, but Hamill needs some SANFL time, and seeing as we've brought in a tall for a running defender, i'm struggling to think who they could have dropped McKay for, as it would have needed to be a small running defender (Not Hamill). The only reason he's being selected is his ability to get the ball out of the D50 and up the ground, whilst also providing an experienced link in the chain going forward. He has no other weapons. Tackling is terrible, general decision making, clangers etc.

You have set a very low bar if you reckon Nicks has improved our selection. Just this season he has
  • Playing a clearly injured and hampered Tom Lynch
  • Playing a clearly injured and hampered McAdam
  • NOT selected a second tall defender for the last month
  • Selecting a clearly injured and not ready Lynch as the medical sub
  • Moving Seed forward to accommodate MacKay
  • Not rotating the youngsters out for a spell to freshen them up
  • The continual selection of Frampton - he is not a youngster he is 24 and is in his 7th year on an AFL list
  • The delayed selection of RT, zero reason not to bring him in earlier. Stubborn AFC conservative bullshit selection.
Some of these moves you might do if your in your window pushing for finals, zero reason to when rebuilding.

But but but he has played the kids - HE HAD NO CHOICE.

List management cut the old deadwood - Nicks has selected the oldest team available each and every week - let that sink in and we're meant to be in a rebuild.

He talks a big game about youth and rebuilding but his selection policies aren't much different to Pyke's. He backs in the older guys every damn time, even when they're bloody injured. I've heard people say the admin gave him a clean slate to rebuild the list but if that is the case, why does he behave like a guy who's shitting his pants about not meeting his KPIs?
