Hard to fault our 23 today overall. Will be a cracker of a match on a ground we haven’t fared well in years. And we have Hawks & Port to come there.

Jones in for Lewis?

West out of sorts the last week but can’t see us drop him.

The fact they brought Lewis straight in probably says they really want the 3 tall structure + English.

If Croft is good to go I’d say he comes in for Lewis.

Beyond that bloody tough to drop anyone even to try get arty in. Hynes would be next in line to go out after Lewis I expect.

In - Croft, Jones
Out - Lewis, Hynes

I like Hynes but think there’s no clear role for him right now.
I agree with this. I really really don’t want to drop Hynes but we need an extra small forward in the side. Davidson is the only other possible option I see but both would be very unlucky.

Lewis is depth only. If Croft is right, simple swap.

Have to bring Artie back in. Gives a point of difference and impact that we otherwise don't have.

Croft, meh. Not convinced by flying for every mark.
Croft was great end of last year and showed plenty of signs in the pre season

Davo would be super unlucky after his 2 goals, plus he topped our Telstra Tracker distance running at high speed despite having the 4th lowest TOG. I think he’s doing a lot of the VDM defensive running while also being able to nab the occasional mark and kick straight.

Adelaide played pretty well tonight and we struggled against them last year, so it should be a good test.

In: Emmett, Jones
Out: Lewis, Hynes

I’d prefer us to play Emmett as the second ruck and leave Darcy forward all game. Particularly against Adelaide with two inexperienced rucks, I think he’s better suited than Lewis for that role. Also don’t think Hynes has done anything wrong but if Arthur is available, he has to be picked based on recent form.

Out: Lewis, Hynes
In: Croft, Jones, assuming both are cleared to play

Jones is best 23 based on pre-season form and glimpses before Andrews KO'd him last week. Some may say that's slender evidence but he is more mature and experienced than Hynes and offers a real point of difference. Hynes is probably 24th best of the fit players so he's unlucky. I like him and I'm sure he'll have a good career but he's not first in the queue right now. Jones will have to perform though. That's the beauty of the form we are in. There are players lining up to take your spot if you don't meet expectations or carry out your assigned role.

Lewis wasn't a disaster but Croft's current level is already higher and his ceiling is much higher. He also offers much more versatility and running ability than Lewis. In case anybody hadn't noticed our new game plan has running ability right at its core. Lewis should get more chances as the season progresses. He'll have learned a fair bit from today's outing and hopefully will put what he's learned into practice next time he steps out at either VFL or AFL level.

Lewis was almost the 'playing' sub today , there to maintain structure if a tall went down. Coaches atent quite sure what do with the 5th rotation.player as yet, so Lewis was an experiment.
Croft has already shown he can compete from.the get go.

Actual injuries will determine selections this week.

Its a long season so players to consider for opportunities to play:
Jones
Croft
Trealor
Dolan

Outs:
Lewis if Croft comes up and good luck after that.

Emmett and W Darcy need 10 or so VFL games to put their hands up and move ahead of Lewis

Croft for Lewis - Lewis showed he's a good kick with his short passes in the fwd line but couldn't handle the ruck, under height and kept being wrestles out of the around the ground ball ups

Jones for Hynes - Jones needs another chance to see if he'll get there and Hynes needs to harden up a bit and learn to put his body in a bit more

When put into the ruck, Croft has the jump to win the hit outs, Lewis just got thrown around by the plastics ruckmen all game

Croft is an excitement machine, capable of anything but what makes him an automatic IN for me is his work rate & defensive pressure. He can do all the things you want a tall to do (obviously still inconsistent at this stage) but can also be dangerous at ground level.

Lewis competed well & looks to be a really solid backup option. But there’s no way he is keeping Croft out.

If Croft is fit he is definately in, clearly in our best 23 with a huge upside and is way ahead of Lewis not even a discussion.

Lewis is a backup for the front 3 only till Emmett and probably W Darcy get some VFL game time, he is a forward and not a ruck.

I rewatched the game to see the rag dolling. As a coach all you want your back up of a back up ruck to do is halve the contest to give your main and proper backup a bit of a break.

Yes he was rag dolled a total of 3 times, looks bad. But wile Briggs was doing the rog dolling he wasn't feeding the ball directly to his mids. In fact in 2 of those 3 occasions we got a clear clearance and set up scoring opportunties and the third we nullified for long enough to set up behind the stoppage.

When you know you have a genuinely undersized ruckman you know it is unlikely you will win the stoppage just do whatever you can to not lose.

He provided that constest as a forward to give Darcy and Naughts a break and is in till the other options are fit or ready

In Croft, Jones
Out Hynes, Lewis

Given they made Lewis take ruck contests in the forward line, it appears that our gameplan revolves around Croft doing the same, and he should come straight back in if fit.

Hynes unfortunately shirked a few contests and he is first dropped IMO

Granted that it's only 2 games in but I've thought for a while now that Hynes needs to find another gear to show a bit more aggression and attack on the ball. I do believe he's capable of doing so and perhaps he's still finding his way confidence wise. A stint in the VFL where he becomes more of 'the main man' around the ball might just do the trick.
