Changes v Geelong Rd 2

I thought Roberton was excellent when he came on.
Was trying to pick up what JVB was doing but couldn't work it out from TV and the commentators are useless when it comes to giving out anything beyond their own opinions.
Imagine MDB will come in if he's ready but don't know who will go out. Pitt did eough quality things to give him another match. Is Palmer fit? Hasn't been much said about his knee. Gee him and Masten seem to have parallel careers!

JVB can only really be replaced by a back pocket player. With Mzunga and Hayden out he is needed in our side.

If Silvangni is fit then swap him for Johnson.

de Boer to play one game at WAFL before coming back for round 3. After a hamstring injury i think you need one game in the seconds.

I assume Ibbotson is a game away still?

Out: Johnson, van Berlo, ??? (Bradley?)

In: Anthony, de Boer, Silvagni

Johnson needs a kick up the arse, and have a message sent that he is not an automatic inclusion. Make him work for it. Anthony can be ineffective but we really need an accurate kick inside 50, de Boer a no brainer

Silvagni, De Boer, Anthony for me have to come in.

Out Johnson, Van Berlo, Suban/Crowley?

JVB actually played one of his better games in terms of skill execution and decision making. Having said that I don't know how many 'stoppers' one team can have and DeBoer would be an automatic inclusion if he's right to go.

Johnson was horrible and Kep tried hard but basically did nothing, and is not a KPF. We need a better forward structure. If Pav is playing 80% mid, we need Jack and Silvagni. Or alternatively, Crowley to tag and McPhee playing KPF swapping with Pav.

I agree that Harvey tends to give new players at least two games in the team. Pitt to most likely stay.

Kep ended up with better stats than Johnson

K.Bradley 6k 2hb 5m 1g 1b
M.Johnson 2k 4hb 2m 0g 1b

Silvagni, De Boer, Anthony for me have to come in.

Out Johnson, Van Berlo, Suban/Crowley?

Suban and Crowley what? Did you watch?

Suban was really important in the second half, his penetration and run was great for us.
And Crowls did a good job slowing down Black when he went to him.

Why not bring in the bullock - Clancee - we wil need some bigger bodies against the Cats. I watched him last week as a forward and he was bloody strong,(not sure this week.........) - maybe johnno for clancee?

And who ever said Suban - ha ha.

Honestly can't see Clancee getting a game any time soon unless we get a few more injuries. I watched him and shep in the wafl last week, and they weren't that exciting.

Some people might not like to hear it, but I think that maybe Walters will be replaced by Anthony. I like Walters, but we had no real lead up targets kicking goals and we had some great kicks inside 50.

If Pavlich plays midfield, then there is a spot for Anthony. From reports he played well on the wkend, but his kicking was not up to its normal standard.

Unless he starts kicking 5-2, instead of 3-4 he will struggle to get a game.

IN: Deboer, Silvagni, Anthony, Roberton

Out: Pitt, VB, MJ,

Bradley (sub)... I know but pitt and vb dont really deserve to be dropped either but Anthony, Mayne, Balla and Waters could be a good forward line so trying to make room :).

Tempted to put Silvagni the sub but he's a better one on one defender than MJ or Bradley imo which I think we'll need against Geelong and so between Bradely and MJ, Bradley keeps his spot for a better effort.

Out: Johnson, Bradley and JVB*
In: de Boer, Anthony and Silvagni

That pretty much takes us back to what our round 1 side would've looked like had Silvagni not been sick. With MJ being the obvious omission.

I though MJ was deplorable. It's weird, he never really has a fixed role in the side, so when he's playing well he's irreplaceable but when he's plays bad, he offers absolutely nothing. Bradley provided the back-up ruck option, Bradley provided the primary/secondary forward target, Bradley was getting back to help out in defense and Bradley was offering a marking target out of defense. What was MJ doing?...

In saying all that, Bradley hardly solidified his position in the side either. Silvagni can come in and play the third tall defender role along with the back-up ruck duties. Anthony can play as a permanent KP forward.

JVB wasn't bad, it's just that de Boer is a better player.

*Why did Palmer go off, was it a head injury like some have suggested? If so, can he play this week?

Just on Pitt, I thought despite having a relatively quiet game he looked a lot more composed than a fair few of his more senior teammates. Statistically he wasn't great, but when he had the ball I was pretty confident he'd do the right thing. Which was pretty important given how tight the game was. To me I think he'll be a really important player if he's given some time to find his feet.

It's funny how expectations work I guess. At the start of last season we were all over the senior blokes to be dropped, but gave the younger players a free ride with 'play the kids' being the typical mantra. This season we're expected to be in the finals, so showing poise and promise in your first ever AFL game isn't enough.

Improvement this season isn't going to come from the likes Pavlich, Sandilands and Duffield, it's going to come from the likes Walters, Fyfe, Pitt & Roberton. If the younger players don't improve, neither will we. If they're not given the opportunity to improve, neither will we. Our side should be good enough to 'carry' a guy like Pitt for a few weeks until he starts justifying his position with more than just potential.

Hill was carried for a few weeks, Ibbotson was carried for a few weeks, Suban was carried for a few weeks and more recently, Morabito - who almost had identical numbers to Pitt in his first ever game (13d, 1g & 2t versus Pitt's 12d, 1g & 1t) - was also carried for a few weeks. Give him a few more games, and with any luck we'll reap the rewards later on in the season.

Harvey mentioned De Boer, Ibbotson and Silvagni in his press conference. Didn't realsie that Ibbo was that close but you'd expect he'd be close to coming straight back in when fit.

Sums it up pretty well. Those INS and OUTS would make the most sense IMO. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see one of Johnson/Bradley retained despite performances.

Harvey likes to give the new players back to back games in the big league especially if they look comfortable so I think Pitt will play again. I agree with what you're saying regarding carrying young players but unlike in 2009 and 2010 when the alternatives weren't great there are actually good players to come back from injury and other players to develop like Chrichton and Bollenhagen. Ultimately it will be a juggling act and Pitt won't get the same level of exposure that Hill, Mora, Fyfe, Ibbo etc received.

Having a bunch of crap replacements certainly meant it was worth playing kids with potential rather than playing duds treading water.

From the sounds of it Michie had a good game in the WAFL. Did anyone see him play? I think he had something like 18 kicks, 1 handball and a goal. He should get a debut game early on in the year.

Weather forecast for Saturday:

"With the continuing long Sonny periods we will see a high pressure in the forward pocket with an extreme wind warning around the Hill in the corridor. The UV alert is looking Lower. Unfortunately we dont have a current reading from the Barlowomator and it should be back online within a few weeks..." ;)

I'd expect we will feild a quick side to beat the ageing Cats, while still having the bigger bodies to go hard at the ball. We cant drop Crowly or McPhee and we need to add D-Boer into the mix.

OUT: JVB, Bradley
IN: Deboer, Silvagni/Roberton (whoever is fitter on match selection day)
