It's a delicate balance.

I fear it's gone too far in favour of the incumbents which leads to complacency on their part and despondency amongst those who rightfully deserve a crack and aren't getting it (CEY, Wigg prob the only 2 in this boat atm).
Hence why i believe weve seen a dip in our performances. While we have won games and usually won well we havent played the way we were at the start of the year. I know people will say weve rejigged our game style and done this and that but continuing to play players out of form for more than a few weeks sends the wrong message to other players.
If cey did come in for thompson and thompson 'had! to cone back the week after other than cey who do you drop?
MCrouch x
BCrouch x
Sloane x
Douglas ?
Lyons ?
Like i said the selectors will see this as a problem they can avoid and back the incumbents to deliver, even if that means we have guys in the sanfl who would be better.

100% agree with you.

Thompson and Douglas are benefitting greatly from this mindset as they are the bottom 2 in the above group atm…not sure the team is better for it.

The other factor is 'experience' and the fact that stats show we lack it means anyone with experience basically gets a gold ticket.

We certainly don't look to be playing 'on the edge' and are at least 10-20% off our best…can we recapture it for finals? Are we tired? Are we stale?

Definitely not going at 100%

I genuinely think the selectors are somewhat hesitant to 'rest' thommo for this game or the freo game incase cey kills it. Its a problem they dont 'need' to deal with. (Telling thommo hes not in their best 22.)
Can you imagine noble and co trying to justify why cey has been dropped after getting 32 touches, 10 tackles and kicking 2 goals for thommo who has been averaging around the low 20s with no scoring.
I really like thommo and i hope in finals he steps it up but it seems age is quickly catching up with him. By playing just 27 players and keeping players in the team even after 2/3 poor performances gives confidence to the players entrenched in the 22, it also makes a mockery of the elite standards concept.
We have alot of good young football talent on our list who are playing very well in the sanfl. There comes a time when you need to see what theyve got and if their better than what the current incumbents have.
Conspiracy Board is a few doors down.

The one thing the club would LOVE CEY to do is to kill it in the AFL. I don't know where this aura about Scott Thompson comes from. '' Scotty your role has changed we will be reducing your TOG while getting games into players we think are the future. ''

Its the same aura that saw Dusty Fletcher play about 60 games more than he should, and the same one that will see Drew Petrie play on next season.

Vader doesnt watch sanfl. He has a pet hate for cey like he had for lyons.
Congratulations on completely missing the point. I didn't say a damn thing about CEY, and my post has nothing to to with any like or dislike for CEY (or Lyons).

My point was about the way the selectors seem to be operating this year. SANFL performances seem to mean almost nothing whatsoever - CEY can play out of his skin and won't make the emergency list; Mackay is dropped, doesn't play a game, and goes straight back into the senior team. Pyke seems fixated on using just 25 players (noting that VB & Knight are out of the equation for the rest of the season). There does not seem to be any intent to use any other players, and no incentive/reward for players performing in the SANFL.

Menzel is NOWHERE near selection. Milera would be ahead of him, Wigg too.
I said 'for finals'...another 2 good sanfl games and i would pull the trigger.

As a forward Menzel >>> Douglas. That's the position they would predominantly play.

Wigg not a forward.

Milera I fear just won't cause the damage in finals that the bigger bodied Menzel can. Don't forget Menzel has proven at AFL level he can get the job done.

FFS Pyke uses who he thinks gives the team the best chance of winning in his opinion, to suggest he does things to keep people happy or to show they are using less players is friggen dumb. If you have that opinion of Pyke and its true god help the AFC.

Menzel won't play an AFL game this season. Missed too much footy for mine, and just doesn't get involved enough.

We really don't need another forward to add to what we currently have, our mids are the weakest link.

Assuming Thompson is undroppable, our best 22 for finals would be Mackay and Douglas out for Hampton and Menzel.

I liked the look of Hampton but still a long way to go before faith can be shown in him, how many games has he played for this year? I cant see Menzel breaking in, a lot of what is thought of him has been brought upon by himself and he seriously needs to proove himself, to rock up to a new club in the condition he did was just unnacceptable cant see him getting in this year unless he destroys a few SANFL games, please dont say its harder to play SANFL, if we dropped Lynch to the SANFL he would tear it up, next year for Menzel.

I can't believe how many "posters" believe that replacing Thommo with CEY or Mackay with Wigg will make a big difference to our team. I would not object to Thommo having a week or two off and/or Wigg moving above Mackay in the pecking order but it will not transform us into a premiership team.

If we are to go deep into October then the main difference will be how much we improve the execution of our game plan. We initially looked O.K. against Geelong but too many players made unforced errors and kicked the ball to the opposition (reminded me of the Bulldogs match at Etihad last year). Some of our players then lacked the confidence to hit targets in the corridor and reverted to long bombs which played into the Cats hands.

My concern is with players taking the safe option over the next 4 weeks to preserve their spot in the team. Unfortunately it is often our more experienced players (Mackay, Henderson) that take the safe option. Rather than calling for the heads of Lever, Atkins, McGovern and Charlie when they make a mistake, I would keep encouraging them to move the ball quickly and take chances.

We have an ideal opportunity to fine-tune our game plan over the next 4 weeks and if we cough up a few extra goals, so be it. If we play safe we may be competitive but we won't win the Flag.

This.

The guys who've been dropped to the SANFL have by and large played key roles there. Brouch, Hendo even DMac at times. Menzel has yet to rip a game to pieces.

Yep ....and yet another bye this week .....so no continuity for Menzel this year at all

Liked the look of Milera in the SANFL last week ......if he were to get in the team for finals, he seems to be a finals type player and could be valuable .....can't see Wigg being in for a finals game though

You do realise the inherent assumption here - that resting Thommo would actually result in CEY's selection? This is not even close to being a good assumption. All signs indicate that the likely replacement would be Wigg, not CEY.

If Jacobs plays this week then we've lost the plot.

Mackay is going to be useless against any decent team. But he did work his way in during the second quarter whilst Essendon was capitulating so that should be enough to secure his spot.

Atkins will want to be very careful. He hasn't been terrible but he's had a pretty mediocre month.

He certainly was terrible on Sunday. I'm struggling to recall a single clean possession or any redeeming feature of his last game. That said, it can happen to young players, but he certainly wouldn't want another game like that. Personally I'd drop him, he needs to halt the slide before it becomes an avalanche.
