WHOA FELLA'S! HOLD UP! YOU'RE ALL GETTING CARRIED AWAY. STOP OVERREACTING........

Apparently we've already been picking the right guys week in and week out. Right from the coaches mouth:

"Our season's not over. We'll keep picking the players that want to stand up.

"We learnt a bit today about a couple of guys, we know the guys that want to fight, we'll keep putting in players that deserve their opportunity.

"If they're not giving us what we need consistently, we'll need to leave them out."

Therefore:

IN: Mackay
OUT: Petrenko

Good news I'm afraid
Quite frankly I'm not sure what good news is regarding Jacobs. He's struggling, but then if we lost him it would mean we'd probably have to select Graham and whatever way I look at it, that is certainly NOT good news. Why oh why didn't we just wait til the draft and pick up Hannath, or Orren Stephenson, or redraft friggin Ben Hudson...

That would mean at some stage in the past 5 years it has actually been not broken. Make them sit and watch a mixtape of Sydney's tackling style each week until they get it through their skulls how to go about tackling.

The only good thing I can see coming out of this game is going back in history to 06 when we destroyed a Geelong team at AAMI with all their future premiership stars in it. Geelong were so impressed with how we dismantled them they used it as the benchmark of what they needed to achieve to take the next step. We have to use this Sydney game in the same way. Sando says we will never play like that again under him...that is a massive call and a bit delusional call if he keeps putting his faith in the same players each week.

Now is the time to be ruthless to set up the club. There are players playing now that aren't going to take us forward, they need to get the arse now so that we can spend the rest of the year finding out who can play with heart and effort each week and find something against the top teams.

We need a Judo or similar, instructor to take our tackling training. I've seen these guys turn 55kg whippits into tackling machines, bringing down guys 40+kg heavier, in just 1 preseason with 2 30minute sessions a week. The Rugby guys are great at teaching us how to stop a 100kg beast charging head on into you, but AFL requires a little more finesse in the tackle, something these guys just don't understand. Actually now that Mattner's retired, I wouldn't be against us bringing him back, he would have to have been close to the best tackler in the league, McLeod was pretty good too.

I think we all forget sometimes that Sando is a second year coach. Is that why he says such ridiculous things, because he hasn't been around the block enough to realise you can't make such outlandish statements about your club? (See season launch comments... Year of the Raven, hottest summer since 97/98.... All that bullshit.)

Or is that just his personality?

I like Sando's optimism and his belief but he talks like a guy who just landed in Australia.

You can't say we'll never play like that again, because when we do, all hell wi break loose. Comments like this seem innocuous now, but wait until he's coached a few more games. Wait until the 50, 75, 100 game mark and a few more variable results. Rucci and co. will be filing all this stuff away for sure.

Spackler talked about one of the problems with our club recently, that we've never had a coach who has had prior premiership success, and therefore, we've never really had an unwavering belief in whoever has been at the helm. With maybe the exception of Blight, who coached three Grand Finals, there has always been a seed of doubt in supporters minds that perhaps this guy in charge has no ********* idea what he's doing.

Does anyone else think that's been a recurring theme in our history? I'm not sure, but I think it's an interesting point.

The moral of this story is that Sando needs to shut up. You would never hear Mick Malthouse promise his fans that his team won't lose by 77 points again. He has been around long enough to know you just can't say that.

Welcome to footy anyway, Sando. I hope you're enjoying it.

We don't play a loose man in defence. Because of this it's easier for the opposition to man up when we're trying to run the ball out of defence (and likewise harder for us to man up when the opposition is running out of their defence)

Because of this our defenders HAVE to be able to win or draw even in one on one situations and make good decisions if they decide to go third man up at a contest.

I think Otten can do this most of the time but then gets lost when the ball hits the deck. Reilly could intercept last year but is awful one out and when the ball hits the ground.
The rest of the backline at least breaks even in my opinion (poor form from Smith currently but we need to persist with him)

Brown is very solid in one on ones but his disposal lets him down. But he should be given the shut down role and Laird used as a more attacking back pocket.

Now we are never going to compete without a spare man in defence if the midfield and forwards don't pressure the ball carrier. We are too slow in attack.

I don't think that Smack and Jenkins playing in the same forward line can work against good teams. They're not good enough to pull down big marks against a team like Sydney, Geelong, Collingwood or Hawthorn (who play extras back) and then when the ball hits the deck it's like we then go 2-3 players down when our opponents are running the ball out of defence.

It's not that I don't think that two talls can work in attack because they can. I just don't think these two talls are good enough to justify it.

This in turn makes our midfield pressure look terrible because they have to run to these contests 1-3 or 2-3 and get exploited. Because they're needed to put pressure on up the field then they can't also get back and congest the backline/ run from the backline when we get the ball.

If we don't want to play with a loose man in defence then:

Outs:
JJ (I think he's been a better forward than Smack, but Jacobs needs help in the ruck)
Reilly (needs to be loose in defence or out of the team. It is the only position where his strengths outweigh his weaknesses),
Callinan ( Kicked a goal, big whoop. Need someone as dangerous but with more defensive pressure/ physical presence)
Porps (Can not just persist with him when he's playing this badly)

In: Lyons (should never have been dropped)
Brown
Jaench (into the forward line)
Martin/ Grigg/ Riley (depending on how they go on the weekend)

I would like these to be the MINIMUM changes.
VB also deserves to be an out for one of the three above.

Our player management has been just awful. Yes it would look bad dropping Reilly, VB, Porps and Callinan as they are all 'senior' players but it shouldn't have come to this. They should have been dropped WEEKS ago (preferably one at a time to keep some experience in the team), been given a chance to gain some form and then brought back in when they had managed it. We have a healthy list. There is absolutely no reason to play out of form players.

Instead we are persisting with them and they are still horribly deficient and it's almost too late for a swinging axe to save our season.

Slippery Pete agreed Sando does need to tone down the big calls. "Adelaide way" what does this actually mean? It's not a high intensity, gut running, hard tackling way. What does it actually mean?

Seriously..... I'm waiting for the predictable ... We need to give the same players the opportunity to respond and go in unchanged

Changes, well this is hard, thanks to our over possessive game almost everyone made it too double figures possessions, making it difficult to immediately single out blokes who quite simply weren't up to it. This game on monday makes it difficult too, with both Lyons and Wright probably the two most likely to have been brought back in. Meh, these are elite athletes, they should be able to get up for a game 5 days later, especially with the bye afterwards to recover. Unfortunately whilst I'd love to consider dropping Reilly and Otten, our backline stocks are basically non-existent now, so I can't.

Note: I'm assuming Petrenko out with injury and that Jacobs will pull up, also that Brown will be given another week, plus the bye. No point pushing it with these younger players. Mackay to find form in the SANFL.

Outs:
Petrenko - Injured.
Callinan - Was okay, but isn't our future. Is far too easy for opposition to shut down and bully him out of the game. A 30 year old should be a cut and dry best 22 player unless you are genuinely challenging for a premiership.
Kerridge - Run out of petrol tickets unfortunately and needs a rest.
Porplyzia - Needs 3 games in the SANFL to learn how to run out a full game in the midfield, is the only way he will return to his best. This, "I can only play half a game" is not good enough, we need him giving us a full 4 quarters. We know he's a gun, but the difference between his best and his worst is too great at the moment.

Ins:
Grigg - Reward for consistent performance in the SANFL, is a hard nut, natural clearance machine with an absolute weapon of a left boot.
Wright - Must be a better option than most of what we have, to replace Petrenko.
Lyons - Clearance machine, but doesn't rely on just being the hardest bloke at the football, actually reads the play and knows how to distribute the ball with purpose having won the clearance.
Jaensch - To play HFF/wing and chop out through the midfield.

B: Laird - Rutten - Otten
HB: Reilly - Talia - Smith
C: Sloane - Dangerfield - Douglas
HF: Vince - Jenkins - Lynch
F: Wright - McKernan - Jaensch
1R: Jacobs - Thompson - van Berlo
I: Lyons - Grigg - Crouch
S: Henderson

van Berlo is to cease playing as a half forward, effective immediately. In reality, I think this is where he has always played his best football, late in 2011 and a couple of years before that. He just cannot succeed as captain playing the roles Sando has had him playing, he needs to be the one leading the way and at the moment Dangerfield and Sloane are the only 2 doing this through the midfield, plus Rutten in defense. IIRC correctly having read the AFL prospectus at the beginning of the year, our best midfield combination by far was Danger, Thommo and van Berlo. We need our leader in the guts, doing what needs to be done, not hiding away on the peripheries play bit-part roles.

Henderson (never to play in defence again) replaced by Brown
Thompson (inj) replaced by Lyons
Petrenko (inj) replaced by Wright
Porplyzia (sub) replaced by Grigg

Very interested to see who on our list currently in the SANFL rips it up this weekend. If I were a non-firsts player at the Crows I'd be smelling blood in the water. Reilly and VB, you're next.

Yeh, but you would have smelt it so many times with noyhing happening that you'd wonder why you even recognise it anymore.

Game Day reporting Jacobs has a knee injury - can anyone shed some light? (Apologies if I've missed it)
Not sure the extent of it but he got kneed in the knee in the last 5 minutes and hobbled off.

It's the sort of incident that can give the PCL a shake

I have noticed all year we continue to play a 5 man forward line a lot of the time which explains why we struggle when it goes forward and the lack of pressure on the way out. We have tweaked our game plan which just isn't working.

Would drop Otten - he has the turning circle of the Queen Mary and I at 50 odd could outrun him!
Henderson is never to play in defence ever again - doesn't apply enough pressure and is more suited to a wing and half forward
Brown to come back but he may be rested another week (plus the bye) to freshen
Petrenko out - he doesn't do enough offensively and Callinan is not the future

Out : Otten, Petrenko, Callinan
In : Thompson, Lyons, Mackay

On notice : Reilly, Henderson, VB

Otten and reilly are the two that have to be dropped. Otten has to be the slowest player in the AFL, he is soft (backed out of a contest last night which cost us a goal) and now offensively gives us nothing.

Reilly has been pathetic all year, hasnt gave us any run from defence, turns the ball over continually and has no regard for his opponent what so ever. At the start of the last quarter last night he was on Okeefe, okeefe started up near the wing reilly started at the back of the square. Reilly just watched Okeefe run sraight past him, didnt even chase him, Okeefe end up running in the open goal while Reilly was standing still back 40m from the goal. He chases kicks and has no idea about defending.

Put your hand up if you would have cracked a hissy fit if Crouch didn't get picked this week, now leave it up if you want him dropped.
Seems to be a bit of it going on.
He was atrocious yesterday, nearly WOG for mine. And that's no mean feat considering performances from guys like Kerridge, Reilly, VB, Jenkins and co.

Made some clangers, was overawed early but that was the case for 95% of our players including the big bodied senior players who didn't need to be rested.

Tough first game back to play in.
Why are you excusing his performance? He should be just as accountable as the senior guys. That was a really really bad game from Crouch yesterday, no excuses. I wouldn't drop him, but it also can't be glossed over.
