Id compare him to Darcy Moore, not Sicily. Could play a role down back yeah I thought his a while ago

Yeah, that's a better comparison. Just because Weid was a gun forward at Jnr level, doesn't mean it's the right role for him going forward. He has too much talent to be wasting away in the VFL. Liam jones is another good comparison. Spent the first 8-9 years or so of his career trying and failing as a forward and is now arguably a pretty good defender...at least he would be in a better team.

Has Weidemann ever been tried in defence? If not, perhaps during pre-season/JLT we could trial him there. It's a long shot, but he could do a Sicily.
I just don’t know if he is mobile enough. We get Lever back next year, with OMac being the more traditional FB player. Frost would probably be preferred over Weidemann.

Personally, I think he has time to develop into a decent forward. He actually provides more intensity than Hogan which is a fair indictment on Hogan and his efforts. I’d be prepared to judge SW at the end of next year.

If Hogan goes back to WA then we will definitely persist with SW as a forward. Next year will be telling for a few players.

May aswell say that JKH will become Stevie J and ANB will become Ablett because those 2 had slow starts to their careers aswell.
But that’s the thing. Progression isn’t a linear curve.

Even if Weidemann does come on to an extent, who are we dropping for him? You can’t play Hogan, McDonald and Weidemann in the same forward line. My bet is that Hogan or Weidemann won’t be at Melbourne in 2020.
I think you might be right. Who would have thought McDonald would become such a handy forward when we picked up weideman.

Also that Topkent wants everyone to have a spell down back

One of the best ways to learn how to be a defender or a forward is to play against a good defender or forward....

I don’t disagree with Topkent on that point, if he is serious. I am not seeing SW as a defender but maybe he could be. It took Majak Daw 10 years to save his career as a defender, although I wouldn’t want him on the list for that long if he isn’t playing regular senior footy.

We’ve got an abundance of talls however. TMac, OMac, Hogan, Lever, Frost, Weidemann, Smith and Petty. Granted the last two probably won’t have long careers with us. We can’t play those 6 in the same side, and I think the club persists with OMac as our FB. It’ll be interesting to see if we play Frost and Lever in the same backline, I reckon we can.

The Hogan situation is interesting, personally I don’t rate him against a decent side, if there was a FTB it’s him. He had the opportunity to step up against Sydney and failed. I think there’ll be more VFL time for SW next year if Hogan is preferenced but I’d absolutely no qualms with him being dropped if he isn’t in form. He may very well request a trade home which opens the door for SW in 2020.

It’s a good problem to have to be honest, seeing 5 years ago I couldn’t even remember who was our starting FF and CHF.

Hogan CHB
Weid and TMac up forward

If Weid comes good this is our best setup.

I agree it's worth a trial but I'm not sure we can call it our best setup when we don't even know if Hogan is capable of playing down back considering he's never done it before.

I'd also like to know what you're thinking the rest of the back six looks like in that scenario. Does Frost get dropped? Because I rate his speed pretty bloody highly!

Hogan would have 9 kicked on him weekly if he delivers the same work rate as he does now.

Probably why Tom McDonald has transitioned seamlessly to a forward role.

You hardly ever see Tmac getting caught up wrestling, he's either working hard back into space or launching into the footy at the highest point. He would be so hard to play on..

I swear you were one of the bastards who gave me crap for this idea last year :)

I like the changes, we should be more mobile up forward with more pressure
