I sat in the Blue and White Brigade (Melbourne Victory's no 1 cheer squad) against Newcastle today. While i was chanting away, I was thinking what a good idea it would be to see each team's AFL cheer squad chanting like the soccer. If their words were loud enough then even their teams supporters across the stadium could get involved and sound spectacular which would give the game more life especially if there are 90,000 people at the G.
So i ask, do you think the cheer squads should organize and rehearse some chants so that people could get involved or is it a bad idea?

If you like the idea, just for fun, please tell a chant you think might go well. It can be a chant that has already been done for the soccer just with the words rearranged.
Heres an example for my club.

We are the Carlton
The Mighty Carlton
And we are mental
And we are mad
We are the loyalest
Footy supporters
The world has ever had

Not needed.

Unlike soccer, there is generally something relatively exciting happening on the field at all times.

There is one chant that will beat anything soccer can muster up....

"BAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!!......... YES!"

Chants at the footy will never work, particularly longwinded ones as above. The game is too fast-paced and scoring occurs too frequently.
Although, i agree that the chants at Victory matches add to the atmosphere.

I was at a Carlton v Collingwood game in late 1993 at the G'

Anyway, Just before the Blues came out the Collingwood cheer squad started singing this to the tune of the Carlton song....

"Dah dah dah dah daaaah
Dah dah dah dah daaah
Dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah daah
DUm Dum Dum

We are the Navy blues
We are the old scum navy blues
Were the team that always lets you down
were the only team that Carlton knows

We know were Carl-ton
Because our ban-ners
Are in Ital-ian
:D

Try standing within a 50 meter radius of the Richmond Grog Squad...chanting non stop, loud and an awesome atmosphere as only Tiger fans can create...

You have to chant at the soccer as there is nothing else to do or watch or even get you excited most of the time, in footy we are constantly put on the edge of our seats......

A good holding the ball decision is almost as exciting as a goal IMO.

It's inspiring

Umpires love it too.

They get a giddy little thrill out of the dramatic pause before they stretch out the arms.

The dramatic pause just gives away the fact they are going to pay holding the ball...geez they are stupid.

IIRC there were a bunch of hawthorn guys singing songs on the first level at the dome and quite loudly during a hawks v bulldogs match this yr. But their level of enthusiasm depended quite heavily on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, they ended quite strongly :o

Especially at a Victory game, nothing to do but chant. Can't get excited about performances since our season is all but over.

I agree, the classing "BAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!" dramatic pause by the umpire before the arms are strecthed indicating it, and the "YEEEEEASSS!!" after, is better than soccer chants, not by as much as others feel in my opinion.

We used to get amazing LIIIIIIIONNNNNS LIIIIIIIOOOONS chants going that shook the Gabba during our premiership years.

Hopefully we can get that back again as we become a force again.
