Maybe; I maintain if Menzel was available, Dunc would have been emerg.
Of course. One was a devastating talent who emerged against serious teams. The other was a young bit-part recruit. Milburn would probably have contributed more than Duncan.

Duncan actually hurt his knee early on when he came in. So was lucky that he didn’t become a liability.

You should know me better than that by now. I couldn't care less whether it's in a group of 1 or 10,000.

There have been increasing queries about him ever since the 2012 Elimination Final. My worries really started after the 2013 Qualifying Final, and they've only amplified since. The last three finals series have seen repeated poor performances - made even worse because posters on here have predicted them fairly accurately. The same players fail, the same coach keeps picking them, the same coach ignores the issues and doesn't acknowledge them. He and the club have completely butchered the development of the players from 2009-2013 inclusive, and the top-ups that were going to deliver a premiership have been exposed as moderate at best.

And if you think I'm going to apologise for being right about that knob, after all the shit we've copped in the last few years you're nuts.
On both sides there are outlandish, extremist claims. Let's just ignore these, it's close a strawman argument, saying all pro and neg Scott people sit with the people at the outer most extremes. I haven't agreed with everything you've said in general, but in regards to Scott, you and many other "critics" have been fair, reasonable and accurate. It's time to stop making caricatures of the people who put time and effort into their critiques. Healthy debate, fine. But sometimes it goes beyond that. From the other side, as well.

Well said.

There have been good, informed contributions from both sides, but both have also been guilty of arrogant belligerence at times, with a dogmatic insistence that their opinion is right because.......well, because it's THEIRS.

As is often the way, the truth probably lays somewhere inbetween.

Does CS deserve some respect and credit for having the skill to be a senior coach in the AFL, which nearly all of us here don't? Absolutely

Is he without flaw? Hell no

Definitely. Glad you covered the other side, because those arguments are just as flimsy. To be honest there are like 80% of us sitting between those posts, and waging a war makes the discussions mean nothing. We've had a while with the guy, and each other - inflammatory stuff should fall to the way side. From my own position, I have more doubt than excitement. But someone in the reverse position is not an idiot.

Replaced Pods off the bench, nice goal, very lucky to be a premiership player. Would not have had a game if Menzel was available. Our memories differ.
No they don't. If Ablett had been playing they would possibly not have picked a midfielder for the bench. But he wasn't and they did. Duncan took his chance as a midfielder, they changed the forward line after Pods went off.

IIRC, Duncan was sub. Remember we had subs. Pods off injured. Menzel not injured, no Duncan.

NOBODY here would suggest he is flawless. He needs defending on this thread only because some of the attacks are ignorant. Some are spot on. If the attacks weren't so feral, this thread would be dead.

The reason this thread exists the way it does is because a few years ago anyone who criticized him were attacked so damn harshly, (and personally) they attacked back just as hard and then so on from both sides.
Only reason we're into part IV and will certainly make it to X
It's not as bad as it was though. I've actually enjoyed the last week going down 2011 memory lane.

Serious question: as unlikely as it might seem, do you think a premiership in 2019 will finish this thread off?

Hell yeah it would! If we win a flag I'll call CS a dead set genius and I'll buy Vdubs and GC26 a slab.
You might.
But I'll suggest that some will be unhappy because we didn't win the flag the "Geelong way".
Or the team won it because they coached themselves.
Or it was won against weak opposition.
Or it was Simon Lloyd's genius.
Or Scarlo's brilliant backline moves.
Anything but Scott.

It's never going to happen so you shouldn't work yourself up about what people might say haha

Ling was better than Ablett in 2010. Err, ok.
Again, It's subjective and as far as team needs go he was coz the Cats could put Clinger on opposition players to shut them down! Ablett couldn't do that and was like the opposite coz the Cats couldn't build a structure around a 'loose cannon' like that! Yeah, Clinger and Corey were the Gatekeepers but Ablett used to leave the gate open too often for them to cover imo!

Cause he was so much more damaging than anyone else. Why limit him to defensive pressure? Talk about playing to weaknesses.

I get what you are saying about the other players allowing him to be so offensive though. But that doesn’t change the fact he was pretty much the best player getting around at that stage.
