Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

Nothing wrong with his foot skills. They're probably something you don't really notice that much, and that isn't a bad thing as it means he isn't making big mistakes.

When he was first coming out of U18 football in 2007, he'd had a few injuries and was also playing more as an undersized forward. Wasn't until he came over to SA that he was moved to the back line, and that has improved his game. Had a knee reconstruction in his second season at West Adelaide, and that ended up costing him about half of last year too. Can't fault the way he has come back this year though.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

Thanks for that. Im sure he will fit in well. We desperately need a lock down defender who can attack as well. Finally we might see Deledio as a midfielder again with Morris, Dea, Batchelor, Houli, Newman being able to fill the 3 smaller backline positions.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

Minor update of my draft. Changed the draft order to match the current ladder, moved a few players around and added three new players - Cameron Ellis-Yolmen (#28), Jason Nyskohus (#69) and Kelvin Williams (#74).

Also would just like to point out that Shane Kersten kicked 7.2 in the Colts today (18 goals in his last three games) while Brendon Ah Chee finished with 23 disposals and 3 goals. Might only be Colts, but as we know one guy is being talked up as a top 15 pick based on two games at that level. Kersten and Ah Chee are two of my favourites, and both are underrated around here in my opinion.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

I'll be updating my draft a bit over the next few days. Have some more kids from SA and WA that I would like to get out there.

Don't expect Waylen Manson to feature though. There are suggestions he may not even nominate for the draft, because of not wanting to move. I wouldn't be overly surprised, given Claremont had been trying all season to get him over and only managed to do so in the past month. Even if he were to nominate for the draft, nobody will use a first round (or even second round) pick on him. I would almost be willing to stake my (minimal) reputation on that.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

Chris, as an Essendon fan, I think we need line-breaking midfielders, who are the candidates who'll slip to our pick?

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

Added in the priority picks - which in turn caused a few changes to the rest of my draft.

The new additions to my draft were Steven Verrier, Henry Schade, Steve Rusca, Cameron Shenton, Lachlan Dalgleish, Waylen Manson, Jackson Coleman, Nathan Blee and Freddie Clutterbuck.

Looks great from a Richmond perspective, Downie looks like a great prospect to develop while Graham/Maric do thier best to get the job done.

It's interesting to see how people rate players differently.

Dalgliesh and Ross for instance....

It should be a very interesting come draft day I think.

I think Brisbane will draft at least one ruck. With Clark heading West, Charman retiring and McCauley being delisted we have no one that can ruck most of a game if Leuey was to get injured. Our other weakness is in KPP's even though Karnezis and Lester were drafted last year, the club has made comments that they are not thought of as genuine KPP's and they also weren't sure on whether to draft Green or go with another tall. I think we will go with a mid at pick 8 followed by 2 KPP's and a ruck with our first 4 picks.

Well I went with two KPPs and 2 midfielders, so not too bad I suppose.

As for that ruckman, I wouldn't be having any set plans. There probably wont be a great deal of ruckmen picked in the entire draft, let alone the first couple of rounds.

If I was Brisbane, I would be looking at taking two in the rookie draft - a mature body and a young kid to develop. Possibly someone like Leif Cope or Damian Hayward who could come in next season if needed. As for the kid, Cameron Symonds has been doing well at WAFL Colts level or local boy Sam Cabrera would be a good choice.

Didn't mean it as a criticism at all. The phantom drafts that you and a few others do on this forum are amazing and I enjoy reading them and coming back after the draft to see where they were rated :thumbsu:

Sounds like a good idea to have a ruckman come in while another one develops. We're likely to receive Freo's pick 16 for Clark so we may also try and trade for a back up ruckman.

Just wondering why you don't have Nick O'Brien featuring in the draft? From what I've seen he is a forward that is just undersized to be a pure KPF, but is more of the lead up forward. Work rate is elite and only problem of his game that I have read of or noticed is his kicking can be a bit inconsistent, but worked on. Also elite leadership qualities.

What do you think will stop him from featuring in the draft?

O'Brien was in the draft, until this update. This was my write up on him...

Not the most exciting player going around, but a good player nonetheless. Playing as a high half forward, he presents well, has a very strong set of hands and wont stop running all day. Captain of North Ballarat, and he can push up into the midfield too. I doubt he'll ever win awards, but the clubs fan will like him. AFL Comparison: Danny Stanley.

For me at least, it's the lack of any standout features in his game which has seen him drop out. I can see him being the type of player who does well in a bad developing team, but I'm not sure he'll ever be a part of a quality team. The work ethic will see him get rookie listed at least though.

Ahhhh, fair enough. Also wanted to get your thoughts on Luke Blackwell? Do you think that he is worth a late draft pick and would he fit the dogs needs(Fast, Outside mid)?

Blackwell will get taken, wouldn't surprise if it was via a trade with GWS.

There has been a fair bit of talk around him and Fremantle, and I'd put money on Blackwell being a Docker next year. Not that I necessarily agree with that, don't think he is exactly what we need what with Lower already on our list.

He isn't fast or an outside midfielder, in fact he is pretty much the opposite of that. He'll be able to play from Round 1, and he just finds the ball no matter what. The reason Blackwell will get drafted again is because he has improved his tackling and his work forward of the centre. But I don't think he has the same level of skill or scope for improvement that some mature aged pickups have had in the past.

Just a depth player, but well worth another shot.

When you say Mitch Grigg is a boring selection, what do you mean by that. I think Adelaide need someone with accurate disposal over a speedy midfielder.

Not saying Grigg is a boring player or anything, just that Grigg to Adelaide has been done to death already. So I thought I would change it up a bit, and go with Sumner.

I think either one of them would be good for Adelaide, Grigg for obvious reasons. But then again, I generally watch the Crows every week (or at least am forced to) and they don't exactly have anything special in their midfield. Quite one paced for mine. Seems like they tried to rectify that with Smith and Tambling last year, but one of them probably wont be around for much longer at this rate and Sumner is a better player than the other.

And anyway, Sumner is a speedy midfielder with accurate disposal.

He has great leadership qualities if that counts as a standout feature. I can see a team giving him a go with their 3rd round pick.

Nice work mate :)

Just a question for you about Brisbane. If you ignore the whole ruck situation (say assuming we plan to take a couple of mature age ruckman), which combination do you think you'd take if they were put in front of you. Kavanagh/Sumner + Dobosz or Elton + Nelson?

Hmm, tough one that.

I would probably go with Elton + Nelson. Elton is the best key forward in the draft after Patton, and could help out in the ruck too. Would also get a good leader up forward, and I can see him working pretty well with Brown.

Whether it's Nelson or someone like Clay Smith, you'd be getting a solid midfielder who could play early. Maybe not at the same level as a Kavanagh or Sumner, but a good player nonetheless.

The other thing in passing on Elton, would be hoping that someone like Dobosz lasts into the second round. I don't have him as high as some others, but someone may like him earlier and potentially Elton/Kersten/Paine/Dobosz could all be off the board.

If Clark goes for 16 (seems to be the consensus), what would be your mix for the Lions Chris?

ie 8 best midfielder - Hoskin Smith/Greene/Grigg/Sumner &
16 best KPP - Kersten/Paine/Dobosz
or vice-versa.

Elton & best available mid at 16.

Guess what I am trying to say is the discrepancy between a midfielder available at 8 & 16, larger than that of a KPP available at 16. Similar to being asked as above but 16 would change things I would think.

I think I would still go for Elton, and then take the best available midfielder with your next pick. Not to say the gap between Elton and the next forwards is that big, but I just think he'd be a better fit than a Kersten or Paine for Brisbane.

If you did get #16 (hopefully you don't) then there will still be some good midfielders available. And there is always going to be one or two highly rated BigFooty draftees who drop (maybe a Grigg, Sumner or McKenzie). With Polec being your first pick last year, getting a solid type who could play early and eventually help take over from Black/Power wouldn't be a bad thing either.

You shouldn't go wrong either way though. The top 20 is as good as ever, so there will be good midfielders and KPPs at both picks.

I may be a little biased being a Sharks fan, but I honestly don't see how you can have Cam Eardley & Max Duffy going in the draft, without Elliot Yeo. He is a big ball winner and clearly has great foot and hand skills. Is one of the younger players in the draft (think his birthday is around October), but played consistently in the U18s and has been one of few highlights for the EF Colts team this year. Also, where would you rate Tom Mitchell if he wasn't a F/S pick (you may have mentioned this but I skimmed over his bio)

You're probably going to like my next update, if you're a fan of Yeo. I have had him in the mix previously, every now and then I'll add someone new and I have to drop a player for them.

Max Duffy is a bit of a favourite of mine, although he wont go as high as what I have him after his past 12 months or so. Perhaps he could swap around with Yeo, but I think Duffy will prove to be a good player.

Anyway, as for Tom Mitchell, I would have him pushing the top 4. I'm a Wingard fan, so I'll always have him at #3. But I'd take Mitchell over Tyson if I was looking for a midfielder at #4.

Super! :thumbsu: I think he's just on the cusp, and thanks for the information about Mitchell.
