Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.1

65 Gold Coast - Dayne Zorko (176cm forward - Broadbeach)

Won't go in the main draft Chris. Gold Coast have the right to pre-list him as a zone selection (yet another of their draft concessions!!!!).

Any thoughts on which if any players GWS may go for under their rights to select up to 10 mature aged players?

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.1

Yeah, they'll have the chance to pre-list him. But I wanted to include him anyway, because I thought he deserved it. The same as Tipungwuti, who I would pick as a zone selection if I was GWS.

I actually don't think the Gold Coast will take him. I can see Brisbane getting him, just a case of whether it's as a Queensland pre-selection, the national draft or through trading with GWS. I think the Gold Coast will pre-list Sexton and Yagmoor, as they are the standout Queenslanders in my opinion. While Brisbane might also look at Thurlow in the rookie draft.

As for GWS and their ability to pre-list players of their own, it's hard to say. Obviously the Gold Coast used their picks to trade with other clubs, so GWS will likely do the same. The other thing is that they have 2 years to use their 10 picks, so they wont be in any rush. They'll probably take Beau Wilkes and might go for someone like Ben Brown, and keep them for themselves.

Otherwise, it wouldn't surprise me if a team wanted to trade for Steve Morris. Maybe Adam Kennedy, or Kyle Hartigan and Tom Lee as KPPs. Who knows, someone might really want Lovett...

Interesting point you make (re trading for players), can young Adam Kennedy be traded by GWS? aka Johnathan Ceglar to Collingwood..

Same story for Luke Brown?

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.1

I keep forgetting that Brown is 19 years old, so he could definitely be picked up by GWS. I think it would be a bargain pick for GWS, but they could also probably ask a fair bit for him too. Guess it depends on if clubs rate him as highly as I do, if they do I imagine he'll be dealt on Day 1 of trade week.

Not sure about Kennedy though, as he is more of a later draft prospect. GWS have 2 years to use their 10 selections, so there might be better options for the Giants to pick up this year.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.1

Chris do you have anyfootage of fraser mcinness? what type of player is he? do you think that he weould make it to our pick? and if not what other kpp would be there for our first pick? would shane kersten be an option or is he more of a 3rd tall which is not really what we are after

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

#26 Collingwood - Jackson Paine (193cm forward - Sandringham)

Vic Metro forward, who showed some impressive signs in the Championships. Obviously Patton got the best defender, but Paine still took his opportunities. Not as consistent as he may have liked, as he tended to go in and out of games. But his leading and marking was strong, I imagine a few teams will like what they see with him and his potential as a tall forward. AFL Comparison: Jack Watts.

That would be a very good pick for Collingwood:thumbsu:

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

Hey

Norths fan here and I really don't see any of them being picked up by North. Our first round pick we have commonly got a slider who was expected to go early. If Devon slipped down he would defiantly be taken. But other than that from you list, I think north would take any of Toby Greene, Crozier, Clay Smith, Julian Duberiz, John Mackenzie or many others over those 4. Have heard little to nothing about any of them

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

I think North were one of the better performers in my draft.

Luke Brown is one of my favourites, and I would have no hesitation in taking him in the first round. He would slot straight into your best 21 playing off half back and would add a lot of run. Aseri Raikiwasa is a big guy, and a very impressive defender. Lots of potential in him, and although North do have a few KPDs I can see him playing at CHB for a long time. Luke Wilson would add another dimension to the North forward line, unlike Campbell and Thomas, he has genuine speed and is a real crumbing forward.

As for Thomas Sheridan, I think he'd be a really good pick for North - especially now that some others are starting to show inside form. He is a very nice size for a midfielder, and is not unlike Bastinac.

These guys are all just as good (if not better) than some of the more talked about players on BigFooty.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

Hi Chris, Been having a discussion on the Tigers board and on another tigers forum about how much of a cleanout we need to do this year and people claiming its a weak draft so can't cut too deep. Say if we could get a mid 2nd rounder for Jackson (pick 40ish) and presuming a few teams only take one or two picks. Say we had pick 10, 35, 40, 52, 60, and 70 could we realistically end up with:
10: Kavanagh/Grigg 35: Kerridge 40: Gordon 52:Tynan 60:Sundberg 70:Zorko/Tipungwuti
PSD: Tyson Thomas
And rookie draft: Lever, Tate, Duscher, Sam Gibson.

Surely that list is better than Farmer, McGuane, Nason, Jackson, Graham, Webberly and Taylor? Or is the draft that weak that we shouldn't bother?

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

What order do you rate the pure mids

I've got Tyson,Grigg,Greene, Hoskin Elliot, Kav in that order (not including Wingard and Coglio) they are 1,2

What one do you think are the big players for Ports pick4?

It might be a weaker draft than normal, but that doesn't mean the quality just stops after the first round. There will always be some later round steals, just a matter of trusting your recruiters. Nothing wrong with having 5-6 picks.

No point in keeping someone you know is a spud. Yeah, the replacement might not be any better but carrying players never helps anything. We've kept Schammer on our list, and despite good form in the WAFL he seemingly isn't even considered. Which essentially means we are down a player. Better to replace them, even in a weaker draft.

Chris are you going to add the priority picks that Port Gold Coast and Brisbane Lions look like getting or are you going to not add them? If so who do you think these teams would take

I'll wait until they're official. Who knows, Port could get on a late roll and win some games. :p

Unofficially though...maybe Waldhuter for Port, Duffy for GC and Forster for Brisbane. Hard to say though, because adding those three picks would change a fair bit.

What order do you rate the pure mids

What one do you think are the big players for Ports pick4?

Hoskin-Elliot, Tyson, Kavanagh, Grigg, Greene.

Hard to say in regards to Port though. Having Hoskin-Elliot would add some much needed run and class, and he can make average forwards look good. But he is skinny and will likely need time. By taking him, Port would need to draft some mature bodies later on.

Tyson would give you the more immediate solution, also has the added ability of going forward. Kavanagh would probably be the best of both worlds, but could he potentially be another Hartlett?

Grigg is obviously the home grown kid. Can't be discounting that given the recent talk about Port and their Victorian kids. While #4 might just be a touch early in my opinion, he'd still slot straight in at Port and have an impact from Day 1.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

Nick O'Brien best on in the herald shield today, really putting his name up for a 30-45 selection.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.1

Nice update and great read

With brissie i see dyson right in the lions sight...reminds me of a n lappin.

But considering the recent committment of rich, harwood, and polec....perhaps the lions will focus on sorting out our waekness down back with buntine or x factor forward with crozier?

I hope Lions can pick up Dom.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

#79 Geelong - Tom Langford (193cm forward - Norwood)

19 year old kid from Norwood, who doesn't exactly have a big profile. Was part of the initial U18 SA squad last year, but missed the final cut. And instead has just been going about his football quietly with Norwood. Averaged 2 goals a game in the reserves this year, and recently made his senior debut. Has very strong hands and a big tank for a key forward, looms as a nice project in my opinion. AFL Comparison: Lewis Johnston.
Even given your admitted thing for Norwood players, I reckon this is a great spot-up. Watching one of his first SANFL league games, straight away I thought 'this kid looks destined for something higher'. Didn't get a huge amount of it, but just looked all class, led to the right spot, strong hands, and has a good kick on him too. Given that he screams out 'AFL potential', wandering what I've missed that he's almost universally ignored (Cam Shenton who is an excitement machine but has his limitations a potential AFL player, and a couple of U/18s who I don't think have even played reserves, were invited as the 3 Norwood players to the SA tall forwards state screening, but Langford wasn't). Just such a classic smooth-moving lead-up CHF that it's hard to find one person to compare him with. If a club weren't prepared to play a 193cm guy who isn't hugely-built as a true KPP, he could even be compared with Ryan O'Keefe (without the on-ball rotations part) and play as a tall flanker inside-50 machine.

Funny also that there are 2 Norwood potential draftees this year who have namesakes in the system. Mat(t) Suckling (never knew the name Suckling was so common) is almost a 'snap' with the ex-NSW boy now playing for Hawthorn; and there's a Tom Langford who missed out in the draft class of '07 and just finished playing 2 years with West Adelaide (mostly reserves) in 2009/10.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

Good to see there is some other support for Langford. One of those guys who wont have a big profile, because there wouldn't be much vision of him floating around having not played in the championships.

But as you said, he does look the part and just knows where to lead. That sort of thing really shouldn't be underestimated. I was hoping he'd get an invite to the state screening, but even so he should still be in draft discussion.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

yeah, I don't' mind Langford either....maybe not this year, but one to watch for next year

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

Hey Chris, one name not to discount out for a pre listing is Josh Smith.

Having a very good year East Perth, one wonders wheter the Giants have learnt anything from the Suns shellackings early in the piece? A young side needs a goal kicker, NOW!!

The recruitment of Davis has started the solidity of defence, I agree with most that Tim Mohr may very well start with the Giants in defence, whilst I can see a few uncontracted, second & third tier players being recruited to the Giants..

Interesting times for the Giants and one I am eager to see unfold.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

Great work Chris!

Who do you think would suit Brissie more Hoskin-Elliot or Tyson? Also who do you think will be the better long term player and what sort of impact would you expect them to have next year?

Cheers:)

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.3

Very nice option for Richmond. I remember reading he was invited to train with Richmond as a potential F/S pick, like 3 years ago or something. Completely forgot about it though.

He can definitely play as a lock down defender. I see him as a similar player to Graham Johncock and Paul Puopolo. So can play on the small forwards while also helping out his other defenders by cutting in front of the leading forward, but is a great rebounding option too. He has excellent speed, but more importantly has the vision to use it properly.

The other great thing about him, is that he never goes at anything at half pace. He is tough and hit hards.

I would definitely consider drafting him, and would be very interested in getting him early via a trade with GWS. But obviously Richmond have the advantage now, and I could see you getting him for a 4th rounder.

Thanks Chris,

Sounds promising as we need a player like that desperately. Can't ever recall having one.

Appreciate the info
