Coaches under pressure in 2018

Simpson and Lyon, more so Simpson. I think Simmo could potentially be the "in the gun"" coach of 2018. I hope that isn't the case, because if he is, we will be playing poorly.

Beveridge won't be sacked obviously, but wouldn't want a doomsday scenario of the Dogs falling further.

Richardson maybe if the Saints don't improve.

Buckley goes without saying if he is extended and Collingwood have a real bad start to 2018.

Good thread concept. I like the list. I'd probably add Alan Richardson to it as well. I feel as though if St Kilda don't make the 8 next year there will be some heat coming his way. They'd want McCartin & Bruce coming on with Riewoldt gone.

Of your list I'd say Simpson, Hinkley, and Lyon are under the most pressure. Port would be wanting to make a preliminary final minimum this year, they've struggled to beat anyone in the 8 and they need to deliver something. WC need to drastically improve for Simpson to have any chance of another year in 2019.

I'd say Ross Lyon would want to at least show something in this last round. They've dropped off dramatically since 2015 so it's really time to show there is a list there that can play finals again soon.

I think it depends on how September plays out. As you say, Cameron and Hinkley could be under pressure if GWS don't make the GF and Port don't win a final or two. Plus, there's always Hardwick if Richmond lose to st kilda and then lose their EF, or go out in straight sets.

Lyon won't be under much pressure imo - he gets to complete the rebuild. Bevo is also fine for another year or two, winning a flag gets you a few years grace. Bolton would want to get the offensive side progressing but I think he will and they'll be ok.

Simpson is the one for me. If Natanui comes back and they're still average then he'll be on thin ice.

Buckley is fine maybe the recruiters and the assistant coaches and of course some of the players may need to look at themselves. Simpson is fine, Lyon should never have been signed up like they did, but Freo always jump the gun, Beverage is having a 2009 Hawk season at the Dogs they will come back, Fagan has done wonders at Brissy and will be there as they rise to the top. Longmire is a ripper. Cameron he's got time left there and on the verge of maybe?? ????
Geelongs coach , see what happens for him next year , but they look alright, Hardwick just has to win a final.

As for that Clarkson fellow, well all the other 17 clubs keep your hands off him .

The only pressure Leon's under is his will to succeed. In the last month we've re-signed him until the end of 2020, that was a great move. Just in case he was tempted. As for Bolton he has a chance to make his name as a coach in the next few years and I'd be very disappointed if he didn't want to stick it out regardless, and the club certainly wants him to.
We're definitely not silly enough to take any notice if salty Bulldogs supporters, who might play finals in the next decade.

I think the pressure comes from the fact you guys won the premiership in 2016, everyone expected you guys to challenge again this year given the age profile of your list and expected improvement from all the young kids, I think another poor year would definitely put pressure on the club but nothing in the way of sackings.

In my opinion a pass will have GWS coached and established as a solid finals competitor in that time with at least a flag, a failure could be if its done without a premiership? He's proven to be quite capable so far.

I don't like the view that we should be winning the next 5 flags and anything else is a failure, held by some. It belittles the efforts of Leon, his staff and the players.
We did have start up advantages and a rare opportunity it's true. I think the Crows are the best team this year, and they deserve admiration for building their list without a lot of help in terms of draft picks, but that's another story.
I'm comfortable with what you said, a flag by 2020 when his contract finishes, and his future will be reasessed, but depending on circumstances he might still get a pass if we dont.
If we were to drop out of finals for couple of years and it wasn't due to to factors like injuries it would also be time for reassessment.

He'd deserve to be given a break for working with a depleted injury list if that was to happen, and risk of injury can only be managed so far. GWS has the depth to carry though and this year's been evident of that.

You simply cant have a club in this day/age start with no support. The AFL failed (IMO) with GCS and the pressure was on to get it right ensuring that GWS were going to be able to build a competitive list. Mission accomplished, anything beyond that is a direct output of the GWS team.

Oh well. Coaches are inevitably the first scapegoat when hopes and expectations are not met. Some like Simmo and Lyon are strangers in a fairly parochial town so are fair game.

Buckley will continue to be under pressure over the next two years of his contract. In his case it seems a lot of Pie fans have already had enough. Should their descent into irrelevancy continue, I expect he will still stay until either he figures enough is enough or Eddie leaves the Presidency. In the latter case of Eddie leaving, Bucks would get his marching orders before McGuire slams the door.

Barring disaster I can't see other coaches under imminent threat beyond Simmo.

Simmo will need to clear the decks. This begun with Buttler and the Brownlow boys. The trade and delisting period will be vital. There are a number of well paid players on their list who do not do the job - some may may attract trade interest. WCE need speed and players able to keep their head over the ball as well NicNac to return successfully. Having Mitchell as an assistant will help.

Thread overlooks Richmond. Coaching Richmond is like being a Premier League manager. Big tides and they turn quickly.

No one is talking about Hardwick because Richmond are 14-7 and currently 4th. They'll probably stay 4th but could drop to 5th or 6th. Either way, a huge improvement on last year's 8-14 and 13th. On a scale of 1-18 in likelihood of being fired, he'd be outside the top 10.

But... they still haven't won a final under his tenure. Three swings, three misses over 2013-2015. If Richmond drop tomorrow's game and lose their EF, Hardwick will catapult up the list. If they finish 4th and go out in straight sets, he'll catapult up the list. If they do the LWL that borderline top 4 sides usually do there will be muffled rumblings but winning a final will buy him some grace. If they win a QF or even more then the bandwagon will be chock a block and he'll be extended for a decade.

* Nathan Buckley - if he survives, he needs a Top 8 finish to keep the wolves at bay. Though I don't understand why you'd renew him only to sack him a year later unless things turn really sour (like bottom 4)
* Ross Lyon - another year like the last two then I'm not convinced his contract will save him. It gives him a bit of security but there's no reason why Freo wouldn't pay it out if they're still struggling.
* Leon Cameron - looking at the talent of that list, they should be only losing 1-3 games a season. This year hasn't been good enough AFAIC, and while injuries have been an issue, an underwhelming finals series will put him under pressure for 2018.
* Simon Goodwin - if Melbourne miss the 8 this year, then I think Goodwin needs a Top 8 finish to keep his job. While injuries have been an issue this year, I'm not convinced they're improving enough to suggest things are entirely on track.
* Brad Scott - all comes down to how confident North are in how much he's rebuilding. The list is in a bit of an awkward situation and he'll be in his 9th year; it might be time for a change.
* Ken Hinkley - needs a final win this year to keep the wolves at bay. Record has been uninspiring since 2014.
* Damien Hardwick - see Hinkley, except the 2014 bit.
* Alan Richardson - has been a coach for four years and they haven't made the 8 in that timeframe. To keep his job he probably needs a finals finish.
* Adam Simpson - list is starting to plummet and he hasn't done enough to really cement his position for a rebuild. A bad season and it might be his last.

Leon Cameron should be under a lot of pressure. GWS finishing 3rd is good and all, but the Giants still can't win big games away from home and they're very lucky to even make the top 4 this year. Richmond, Collingwod and Geelong all should of beat them at Skoda.
