I just heard from my reliable inside man at the club (Kim Hagdorn on 882) that David Hale is taking over from Suma as the forward line coach.

Suma instead will be become director of coaching after taking over from Simon Lloyd.

Anthony Rock and Bent Guerra will be development coaches only.

He also said that Mark Stone will handle both the midfield and stoppages, whilst Michael Prior will handle defence.

So Kirky's role not being replaced.

Good to see someone new in the forward role, it needs a shake up

Director of coaching for Suma?.....

So get guerra for hawks ball movement off halfback and hale for their forward set up. Makes sense. Hopefully our forwards become more attacking.

It's a big call for a guy that has never coached before to step straight into a line coaching position. They must really rate him.

Re: Suma, it's just reward for him with his wealth of experience and this is as high as he could go without being a head coach

That's great news about Suma. He can be kept on in an effective role that will keep him happy and we have a change-up in the forward line coaching that we desperately needed.

Good to hear, we have capable forward line players but what is needed is better tactics and positioning to create space for anyone to run into ala the Hawks.
We'll be developing some hard nut young players with Rock and Guerra in those development roles!

I read the move of Sumich a little differently. Our forward line needs change and improvement and it has been underperforming. If we were firing up front Sumich would still be doing the deed; I see it as the club being pro-active about where we need to improve. It is also a vote of confidence in him that he is valued, but not in that particular role.

Quite a few Hawks supporters said he had an excellent football brain. Also with him being a qualified teacher he should excel at being able to get his ideas across.

I like it, i suppose it is a big call but I'm not sure it could get any worse than last year so definitely worth the risk.

I'd give that a "maybe".

What exactly does being a Coaching Director entail??

My guess would be that he'd report to the board on all matters pertaining to coaching. Would free Ross up to focus more on his job.
Apart from that he'd be a part of the coaching team and in amongst the action but have no particular role. An overseer if you will. To look at things from a half step back. He'd also be a mediator, a role model and most importantly a confidante to Ross.

So in summary, Ross and the executive have a lot of confidence in Suma.

Aren't these Director of coaching positions usually appointed for clubs with relatively inexperienced coaches to give them support and guidance etc?

Could it possibly undermine Ross's authority?

I've always thought Suma had a senior role, so as not to undermine Ross's authority
