Sucks, but it is what it is. Modern AFL cares not for club loyalty and club captaincy. Contracts aren’t worth the paper they’re written on.

Having said that, no hard feelings TB, get that bread.

Club must extract maximum payment, considering Tom is under contract. Hawks first at minimum, but a future F1 or F2 is necessary.

Just don’t trade this pick for Baker ffs

Try being a Suns fan... about to pay Pick 6 for Daniel Rioli, not too long after they delisted a best 22 player in Jarryd Lyons with a year left to run on his contract... only for him to be picked up as a free agent by none other than their rivals Brisbane.

And we mustn't forget about that time they gave Cockburn Pick 2 for Lachie ****ing Weller.
Yeah but then they pick up the likes of Walter and Rogers last year and can just give up pick 6 for Rioli, yet still bring in a top 3 rated kid in Lombard.

Its been a theme that the kids playing VFL come back to the Talent League chock full of confidence and turn in a ripper performance, and Harvey Langford was no different. He was relentless and beastlike around the stoppages, damaging with the footy outside of the contest, strong overhead and slotted four goals to round things off and help his team get the win.

I have a weird gut feeling that our recruiters will love Langford and we'll grab him at 3 (or push back a few spots to get him)

He looks a jet. We really can't go wrong with our selection - whether it's Jagga, FOS, Draper, Smilie, Langford or Lalor

Excluding M.Reid from the above list because of the mumma's boy concerns

Rioli is the one that stings... pick 40 for him was an absolute joke.
firstly, we didn't get pick 40 for Rioli. It was all part of the JHF megatade and this is exactly what we gave and received. Not sure it was an overly great deal, but it was certainly not the deal you think we made. Also, the future 2nd got us Clay Hall, and the future 3rd got us Harvey Johnston so there's still a bit to play out before we can say it was a crap deal.

Happy to back pedal on that then, I got that massively wrong. Oops.

This “Tom Barrass is one slight breeze away from never walking again” stuff is so weird.

He played 18 games this year, which included a one week suspension, a one week concussion and a two week shut down to preserve trade value after said concussion.

Yep and also add on that in Victoria he'll have to hop on a plane only once every 6 weeks.

Barrass leaving may work out for the best but put yourself in Hawthorn's shoes. What would you give up for a 29 year old with a degenerative back?
They are also signing this 29 year old with a degenerative back to a 5 year deal on big money so that angle doesn't really work

I don’t think Hawthorn will get past a prelim, if they make it that far -
• Week 1 - Bulldogs
• Week 2 - Loser of Port v Geelong
• Week 3 - Winner of Sydney v GWS

The only side in comparable form to Hawthorn is the Bulldogs and they have the forwards capable of troubling the Hawks undersized defence. When they played in R8 Hawthorn won by 7 points at the start of their resurgence - they only had one win and were thrashed by Sydney the week before. The Bulldogs weren’t going great either with just 3 wins

Can see them knocking over Geelong or Port in week 2

Hawthorn remind me of Melbourne in 2018 - young team on the rise, built momentum late in the season and won their first two finals before travelling to Perth to play us

They’ll lose to either Sydney team

So worst case would be pick 15 as the foundation stone of the trade plus one of -

• pick 30
• F2
• F1 which probably sees us sending our F2 back

Funnily enough I think there’s a point where we stop barracking for the Hawks to lose and start backing them to win.

Bundled our first week to net us Pick 11/12 obviously ideal, but if they get on a run it’s really just worth it for them to keep winning so their first is crap. Keeps the F1 with an F2 going back on the table.

Someone from another club came onto the board a couple of weeks back and said our recruiters had been to visit Langford and Smillie.

I presume they'll visit most possible but that's a fairly early visit.

Contracts stand up in court 100%. It's more what stance the club takes in its best interests. TB signed a contract that was a two way commitment giving both parties certainty. Wanting out after 12 months is a measure of his words worth.
In a selfish football sence I think this works in our favour.

If Richmond get 6 & 9 for Rioli / Bolton & WC get 12 for TB, this is how I see the top 12 unfolding

Note: I do think North may split or just blow up the top 10 by taking Trainor. 3-7 is hard to predict too, you could flip any of those guys around.

1. RIC - Smith
2. NM - O’Sullivan
3. WC - Draper
4. ADE - Lalor
5. MEL - Smillie
6. RIC - Langford
7. STK - Reid
8. ESS - Shanahan
9. RIC - Trainor
10. FRE - Allan
11. CAR - Berry
12. WC - Travaglia
Carlton do need a small forward so Berry makes sense for them, but I do know that they are very keen on Travaglia, which might be a problem.

His current contract was signed in December 2021, near enough to 3 years ago. Fair to say a bit has changed since then, not least a massive increase in the salary cap that wouldn’t have been predicted at that time

He’s been offered better money on a longer term and by all reports would’ve stayed had we pushed a bit more money his way

As it turns out, the value of the draft pick(s) we can get for TB is more beneficial in the long term than retaining him

Trading him has been as much the club’s decision as it has Tom’s

Bonner delisted from the saints. Wasn’t too bad this year, decent kick coming out of D50 and probably an upgrade on witherden/rotham. Any interest?

Meh. Pass.

I do think we need some creativity off the half back though. I’m not opposed to Ryan going back there tbh. Especially if Brockman and Long come back in and do their role as pressure smalls that can rotate through the mid at times.
