Just on this. When has our “good faith” in negotiations actually helped us in future trades.

We seem to love keeping good relationships but I can’t remember a time when that’s actually worked in our favour at the trade table.

Seems like being dicks actually gets you somewhere (maybe not Dodoro levels), but people quickly move on and will still deal with you in the future.

Bulldogs won’t be happy with Geelong after Smith last year but they’ll still make trades with them if one comes up.

Yep.

It's like arseh*le blokes get all the chick's.

Good guys go home alone.

Don't hate trading a pick if it means we can get a few top 10 picks (e.g. via essendon). Would still want one of WD or CDT though.
We should be trading up with our picks in this draft.
Trading down would only be on he table if someone comes with overs for Duursma.
We have plenty of picks we can move into next year, but I wouldn't be trading picks 1 or 2 into next year as there is enough quality at the top of the draft.
We will have Ryan trade, Chesser trade we can move into next year.

According to who?

The player chasing a big new contract?

And the club who wants top dollar at the trade table.

Can only go off what’s been reported, Barrett said he was clear to return to the field if play.
Now if you know he wasn’t then that’s great.

Only if Lions match the offer for a rfa bid though isn’t it? Not if they just don’t agree to terms.

If we don’t officially offer a rfa contract due to compo dilution then he’s just an uncontracted player isn’t he? In that case can’t he nominate for psd? Can’t make him re-sign
Not how I understand it, he’s still protected under the byproduct of RFA. Let me find a source to back myself up.

I am not happy in some areas. Because

In other areas it is too soon to tell.

You seem to default to "our recruiters are crap and keep making poor decisions.....waaaaaah"

Even after we pretty much turned over the entire list management team 18 months ago.

I'll call it a bad decision when we actually know it was a bad decision.

Not jump at shadows and wet the bed because the club didn't do what I wanted.
Giving away pick 3 because we made a 'commitment' and telegraphed that trade like giddy schoogirls was more of the slop our club has been renowned for, for 10 years.

If Starcevich simply refused to sign at brissie, i would have thought he is free to just walk to PSD. He would just be an uncontracted player, wouldnt matter if he's RFA or otherwise. He would be entitled to walk just as a matter of right - Brissie cant hold him there against his will just because they offered him a deal. With that said, our club is way too concerned about doing the "right thing" and preserving relationships to walk him to the PSD.

sadly I was right

An offer to a Restricted Free Agent may be matched by their Club. Should their original Club match the offer, and the Restricted Free Agent Player does not wish to remain with their original Club, they must enter the National Draft or seek a trade. Compensation in the form of AFL allocated draft picks will apply to clubs with a net loss of Free Agents, based on the formula determined by the AFL.

Brisbane putting an offer and us not gives them equal protection as if there was a bid to match.

I'm pretty sure most players wouldn't do it either TBF.

That’s not how I read it. I read it as Brisbane offering any deal gives them protected status they have greater than matched.

Curnow is a much more rounded player than King. His age is also less of an issue as if they gave him four years by then Read, Walter would be ready to take over full time.

King will probably get massive offers as a RFA next year. So the cost certainty of agreeing a Curnow contract might appeal.
Or if king wants to stay you could move him down back, he was a backman til his bro did his knee in his draft year from memory

Quite apart from us “preserving relationships”, I wouldn’t have thought Starcevich would be too keen to do that to the club that he’s just won two flags with.

hmm okay seems odd the afl will force a player to pick a certain draft but i dont know any better
I think it’s a particularly weird set of circumstances that operate in the middle and haven’t yet happened. There’s not usually an incentive for the club not to match through the mechanisms.

I’ll send the AFL and the AFLPA some emails to make sure I have the read right.

I don't see any reason why he can't nominate for the PSD. It does not make sense for free agents to have less flexibility than non free agents when they are out of contract.

Out-of-Contract Listed AFL Primary List Players
Draft Nomination Form Lodged
Thursday 31st October 2024
Note: Out-of-Contract Listed players who lodge a nomination form at this time are delisted automatically and must stipulate they are either entering the National Draft or the nomination form is to be held over for the Pre-Season Draft (thus bypassing the National Draft).

Whether Starcevich was technically concussed or not in the GF, giving somebody who just has just recently had 3 months out of the game with concussion issues a 6 year deal is very optimistic.

And his current club was only willing to offer him 2 years despite him being a high enough calibre player to warrant a 5 year deal based on ability alone. What does that tell you?

I would definately be asking some questions of Brisbane if i was Pyke. Such as did they actually perform a concussion test, or do you have to wait 20 minutes after the incident before doing it and by then Brisbane was 5 goals up and so they decided not to bother? Brisbane and Starcevich both have a big incentive to play down the incident.
